The best perk on any credit card right now is the Citi Strata Elite's $200 Splurge Credit, and the reason has nothing to do with the dollar amount. It's that you pick where it goes, and you can change your mind.
Every other big credit on a premium card decides for you. Book here. Eat there. Shop at this one retailer.
The Splurge Credit hands you a short list and lets you point $200 at the two names on it you'd actually spend money with anyway. That's a small design choice, and it changes the whole math of a $595 annual fee.
I'll show you how it works, what the fine print really says, and where it beats the credits on the cards it competes with.
What the Splurge Credit Actually Is
From Citi's own Strata Elite page, read on September 11, 2026:
"Every calendar year, earn up to $200 in statement credits on your choice of up to 2 of the following brands: 1stDibs, American Airlines (exclusions apply), Best Buy, Future Personal Training, and Live Nation (exclusions apply)."
Five brands. You activate two. You spend with them, and the credits come back as statement credits, up to $200 a year in total.
The card's annual fee is $595, per Citi. An authorized user is $75.
The Part That Makes It Different
Here's the line in Citi's terms that I think is the most underrated sentence in any premium card's benefits: "You may change your merchant(s) selection at any time."
Not once a year. Not at renewal. At any time.
So the credit follows your year instead of the other way around. Buying a laptop in March? Best Buy. Flying American in October? Switch to American Airlines.
Concert tickets in the summer? Live Nation. The two slots are yours to move, and moving them costs nothing.
I don't know of another premium card credit that works this way. The closest most issuers get is letting you pick a category once a year, which is a different thing from changing your mind in June because your plans changed in May.
Compare that with how a locked credit behaves. If a card gives you a hotel credit for one booking site, you either book through that site or the credit dies. The Splurge Credit is the only one I can think of where the cardholder holds the steering wheel.
The Rules, Because They Matter
The flexibility comes with mechanics, and they're worth reading once so you don't lose a credit on a technicality. All of this is from Citi's terms on the same page.
Two at a time, and the clock is Eastern. "You may activate no more than two Splurge Credit merchants at any time." A merchant is active from 12:00 a.m. ET on the day you activate it. If you activate more than two in a day, Citi says "the final two selections at 11:59 PM ET will be activated for that day."
The transaction date is what counts, not the posting date. Citi's example is exact: pick a merchant at 11:00 p.m. ET on a Wednesday, and purchases with that merchant carrying a Wednesday transaction date may qualify. If the merchant submits the Tuesday before, it doesn't.
That cuts both ways at year end. Citi says purchases with a transaction date late in the year are eligible for that year's benefit "even if the posting date is in the following year."
Shipping can move the date. Citi warns that "some merchants will not process a purchase transaction until the merchandise is shipped," which delays the transaction date. If you're buying a back-ordered TV in late December, don't assume it lands in that year's credit.
Be patient after the purchase. Citi says it may take one to two billing cycles for the credit to appear, and that Splurge Credits aren't applied to your minimum payment due.
The Exclusions You Should Know Before You Pick
Two of the five brands carry conditions, and Citi spells them out.
American Airlines. Qualifying purchases are "items billed by American Airlines or American Airlines Vacations as the merchant of record." Not qualifying: car rentals, hotel reservations, AAdvantage status boost or renewal, and AA Cargo products and services.
So this slot is for airfare and American Airlines Vacations packages. If you were planning to buy a status boost with it, pick a different merchant.
Live Nation. The purchase has to be made directly on livenation.com or ticketmaster.com and be fulfilled by Live Nation or Ticketmaster. Purchases fulfilled by another third-party service don't count, and events or venues outside the United States and U.S. territories don't either.
That rules out resale marketplaces and a festival in Mexico. It covers most of what people actually buy in a year.
Why I Rate It Above the Other Big Credits
Premium cards all advertise credits that "offset" the fee. The question I ask about every one of them is simple: would I have spent this money anyway, without the card telling me to?
Run our own card records through that question. Our credit card data tracks the headline credits on the four cards people cross-shop:
The Amex Platinum, at an $895 annual fee, carries a large stack of credits tied to specific merchants and a specific hotel program. If you stay at those hotels, eat at those restaurants and buy that brand of clothing, it's the richest pile on the market. Every one of those dollars comes with a name attached.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve, at $795, pairs a $300 travel credit with up to $300 in dining credit. The travel credit is the easiest one in the business to use, because almost any travel purchase triggers it. The dining side is narrower.
The Capital One Venture X, at $395, gives a $300 travel credit that has to run through Capital One Travel, plus 10,000 anniversary miles. The lower fee does a lot of work here.
Every one of those credits is worth real money. They just decide for you. The Splurge Credit is the only one where the answer to "would I have spent this anyway" is one you get to arrange, by picking the two brands where the answer is already yes.
For what it's worth, this isn't the only credit on the Strata Elite. Citi's page also lists a $300 annual hotel benefit, applied at booking on a stay of two nights or more through cititravel.com, and up to $200 a year with Blacklane, split into $100 from January through June and $100 from July through December. Those are good. They're also both locked to a provider, which is exactly my point.
How I'd Use the Two Slots
I'd set them once in January and revisit in the summer.
If you fly American at all, take that slot. Airfare is the easiest $100 to spend without inventing a purchase, and AAdvantage transfers make the card interesting to begin with. Our Strata Elite review covers that side of the card.
For the second slot, pick the brand you're going to spend at within six months. Best Buy is the default for most households, because appliances and electronics come up. If you buy concert tickets more often than you buy a dishwasher, take Live Nation instead.
Then actually switch when your year changes. The whole value of this credit is in that one sentence from the terms. A credit you never revisit is just a smaller version of everybody else's.
If you want the full walk through every credit on the card, we did that in our Strata Elite statement credits playbook.
A Year With the Two Slots
Here's how I'd run a calendar year, using Citi's own rules rather than a theory.
January. Activate American Airlines and Best Buy. Both are brands most households touch at some point, and the American slot is the one most likely to fill itself.
Whenever you book a flight. Buy it billed by American Airlines or American Airlines Vacations, since Citi says those are the purchases that qualify. Skip the car rental and the hotel on that booking, because Citi excludes them from this credit.
Around a big purchase. If a concert or a festival is coming, switch the second slot to Live Nation before you buy the tickets, not after. Activation starts at 12:00 a.m. ET on the day you make it, and the transaction date decides eligibility.
December. Check what's left of the $200. If you're buying something that ships later, remember Citi's warning that some merchants don't process the transaction until the item ships, which can push the transaction date into January.
The point isn't that this is complicated. It's that two decisions a year, made in the right order, are the whole job.
What Else the $595 Buys
The Splurge Credit doesn't stand alone, and it isn't the reason to hold the card by itself. Citi's page lists the rest, and it's worth seeing what the credit sits next to.
Earning. Citi lists 12X points on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through cititravel.com, 6X on air travel booked the same way, 6X at restaurants during what it calls Citi Nights, which is Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. ET, 3X at restaurants at other times and 1.5X on everything else.
Lounges. Four Admirals Club passes a year, which Citi describes as "a value of over $300," plus a Priority Pass Select membership that Citi puts an annual value of $469 on. An authorized user can have Priority Pass for $75.
The hotel benefit. Once per calendar year, $300 off a single stay of two nights or more booked through cititravel.com, excluding taxes and fees. Citi says it's applied instantly at the time of booking.
That timing is worth putting next to the Splurge Credit, which Citi says can take one to two billing cycles to show up. Two credits, two rhythms, and only one of them confirms itself while you're still on the booking page.
Blacklane. Up to $200 a year in private chauffeur credits, and the split matters: up to $100 from January through June and up to $100 from July through December. An unused first half doesn't roll into the second.
Transfers. Citi lists American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, Choice Hotels and The Leading Hotels of the World among the partners, plus no foreign transaction fees on purchases.
Line those up and the pattern is clear. Every one of them tells you where to spend, except the Splurge Credit, which asks you where you already do.
Who This Card Isn't For
The Splurge Credit is a reason to like the Strata Elite. It isn't a reason to carry it.
If you don't fly American, a big part of the card's case goes with it, and you should look at what your own airline's ecosystem offers instead.
If you won't use the hotel credit through Citi's booking site, subtract $300 from your mental math before you decide on the $595.
If lounge access is the whole reason you're shopping, compare properly. The Strata Elite includes Priority Pass Select and four Admirals Club passes a year, which is a different product from a membership. We set those side by side in our Admirals Club access guide.
The Broader Point
The credit-card business spent a decade making annual fees bigger and then papering over them with credits you have to live around. A $400 credit you'd never have spent is worth less than a $200 credit aimed at a purchase already on your calendar.
Citi got that right on this one perk. It's the best perk on any card right now because it's the one that respects how people actually spend, and because changing your mind costs you nothing.
When the card launched, I wasn't sure Citi would follow through on the details. Our launch coverage laid out what was promised. A year on, the Splurge Credit is the piece that turned out better than advertised.
