The Citi Strata Elite is the most interesting premium card Citi has shipped in a decade. It's also the one most reviewers have rushed to slot into "Platinum lite" or "Reserve killer" boxes that don't quite fit. The annual fee is $595, against $895 for the Amex Platinum, $795 for the Chase Sapphire Reserve and $395 for the Capital One Venture X. It earns up to 12x on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi's portal and opens up ThankYou Points transfer partners few American travelers actually use well. So the question isn't whether the Strata Elite is a good card. The question is whether you, specifically, will get $595 of value out of it. Let's look at three honest usage levels and find out.
Quick Summary
Best For: Travelers who already use ThankYou Points or want to start, who book hotels and car rentals through Citi Travel, and who can use the $300 hotel benefit, $200 Splurge Credit and $200 Blacklane credit without contortion.
Standout Benefit: 12x on hotels, car rentals, and attractions through Citi Travel, plus ThankYou's underrated transfer partner list, which on Citi's page includes American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, EVA Air, Choice Hotels and The Leading Hotels of the World.
Biggest Drawback: The 12x and the $300 hotel benefit are both Citi-Travel-only. Book a hotel direct and it earns 1.5x, not 12x.
Current Offer: 75,000 bonus points after $6,000 in purchases in the first 3 months.
What the Strata Elite Actually Is
The Strata Elite is the flagship of Citi's Strata family. It sits a tier above the $95 Strata Premier and earns the same ThankYou Points currency, as does the Custom Cash. Citi stopped accepting applications for the Custom Cash on May 28, 2026, so that only matters if you already hold one.
The card is a Mastercard with no foreign transaction fees, and Citi adds travel and shopping protections on top: Trip Delay Protection, Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Protection, Lost or Damaged Luggage, MasterRental car rental coverage, Extended Warranty and Purchase Assurance Plus.
Its 12x on portal hotels is the highest hotel rate of the premium cards compared below. The credits are good. The lounge access is broader than it first looks, with Priority Pass Select on top of the Admirals Club passes. And the transfer partner list is the quiet asset most people miss.
Earning Structure: Where the 12x Actually Hits
Here are Citi's earning rates on the Strata Elite as its card page lists them today.
12x ThankYou Points on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through CitiTravel.com.
6x ThankYou Points on flights booked through CitiTravel.com.
6x ThankYou Points at restaurants on Citi Nights: purchases authorized from Friday 6 PM to Saturday 6 AM ET and from Saturday 6 PM to Sunday 6 AM ET.
3x ThankYou Points at restaurants at any other time.
1.5x ThankYou Points on everything else.
The headline number is 12x, and it's real, but it has a leash. You only get 12x when you book through Citi Travel, which Citi says is powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda. Direct bookings with hotels and car rental companies fall under all other purchases at 1.5x, not 12x. The same applies to the $300 hotel benefit later: Citi-Travel-only.
If you're a hotel-status loyalist who books direct with Marriott, Hyatt, or Hilton to keep your nights and stay credits, the Strata Elite's 12x is mostly theater. You won't book through the portal because you'd lose your status night, and 1.5x on direct bookings is a big step down.
If you don't care about hotel status, and you're a price-shopper who books whatever's cheapest on a given trip, then 12x on every hotel night through Citi Travel is genuinely best-in-class. Say you book a $1,000 hotel stay there: that's 12,000 ThankYou Points to send to a partner like Avianca LifeMiles or Turkish Airlines (if the $300 hotel benefit covers part of that stay, that part earns no points). The 6x on flights is similar in spirit: useful if you don't care which airline ecosystem your status sits in.
The Credits That Move the Math
The Strata Elite carries three calendar-year credits: up to $300 off a Citi Travel hotel stay, up to $200 in Splurge Credit and up to $200 in Blacklane credits. Citi puts the whole package, lounge access included, at nearly $1,500 in value.
$300 Annual Hotel Benefit (Citi Travel Only)
Once per calendar year, Citi takes up to $300 off a prepaid hotel stay of two nights or more booked through Citi Travel. It's applied at the time of booking, not as a statement credit, and if the booking comes in under $300, the rest stays available for another qualifying booking that year. It's the leash again: book direct, no benefit.
If you already book a two-night hotel stay through Citi Travel each year, you'll use this in full without changing behavior. If you're a hotel loyalist who never books outside the chain's own portal, this benefit will sit unused, and you should weigh it against the fee accordingly.
$200 Splurge Credit
This is the more flexible credit and the one most reviewers underweight. It's up to $200 in statement credits each calendar year on up to two brands you activate from Citi's list: 1stDibs, American Airlines (exclusions apply), Best Buy, Future Personal Training and Live Nation (exclusions apply). You can change your picks at any time.
Anyone who buys concert tickets on Live Nation or Ticketmaster, electronics at Best Buy, or purchases billed by American Airlines once or twice a year will burn through $200 without thinking about it.
$200 Blacklane Credit
Up to $100 in statement credits on Blacklane chauffeur bookings from January through June and up to $100 from July through December, booked in the Blacklane app or on blacklane.com. It's the easiest of the three to forget, and the most useful if you'd book an airport car anyway.
Say you'd book one two-night hotel stay of $300 or more through Citi Travel and spend at least $100 on Blacklane in each half of the year anyway. That's $300 plus $200 back against the $595 fee before you count the Splurge Credit, lounge visits or a single point.
Lounge Access: Priority Pass Plus 4 Admirals Club Passes
The Strata Elite includes a Priority Pass Select membership for primary cardmembers and authorized users, covering more than 1,500 airport lounges with up to two guests per visit. Citi values the membership at $469.
On top of that, the primary cardmember gets four Admirals Club Citi Strata Elite Passes each calendar year for nearly 50 Admirals Club lounges. A pass is good for 24 hours, you can use extra passes to bring adult guests, and everyone needs a same-day boarding pass on a flight marketed or operated by American, a oneworld carrier or Alaska Airlines. Unused passes are forfeited at the end of the year.
That's a smaller network than the Amex Platinum's Global Lounge Collection, which Amex puts at over 1,550 lounges including Centurion Lounges, but it's real lounge access on every trip, not a token benefit.

ThankYou Points Transfer Partners: The Underrated Asset
This is the part of the Strata Elite story that most reviews skip past in three sentences. Citi's transfer terms list these participating programs:
Airlines: American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, EVA Air, Air France KLM Flying Blue, JAL Mileage Bank, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus, JetBlue TrueBlue, Turkish Airlines and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (and Virgin Red).
Hotels: Accor Live Limitless, Choice Privileges, The Leading Hotels of the World Leaders Club, Preferred Hotels & Resorts and Wyndham Rewards.
The same terms say redemption rates may vary depending on the Citi card you hold, so check the rate on your account before you move points.
A few of these are the most undervalued partners in the entire U.S. credit card ecosystem. Avianca LifeMiles for United-operated flights to Hawaii, Europe, and South America is a long-running sweet spot. Turkish Miles&Smiles for United domestic awards is famously cheap when you can find availability. Virgin Atlantic for ANA business class to Tokyo is one of the best premium-cabin redemptions in points and miles, full stop. Cathay Asia Miles to Hong Kong and onward Asia routes is similar.
The Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve both transfer to overlapping but different partner lists. The Strata Elite gives you Avianca, Cathay, Turkish, and KrisFlyer in one card, which Chase doesn't fully match (Chase has Singapore but not Avianca, Cathay, or Turkish). For award-flight strategists, the Strata Elite is closer to "Amex Platinum without Delta and ANA" than it is to "Chase Sapphire Reserve with extra credits." That's a meaningful distinction.
How the Strata Elite Compares
There are three premium cards a Strata Elite shopper is also considering. Here's how they line up on today's fees and structure.
Amex Platinum ($895): Best for big lounge networks (the Global Lounge Collection, which Amex puts at over 1,550 lounges, including Centurion Lounges, 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying an eligible Delta flight and Priority Pass), the heaviest credits stack ($600 hotel, $200 Uber Cash, $200 airline fee, $219 CLEAR+, $400 Resy, $300 Equinox and more, with the catch that several are tied to specific merchants or need enrollment), and Membership Rewards transfer partners including Delta and ANA. Whether the higher fee pays off depends almost entirely on how much you actually use the Centurion Lounges and the credits.
Chase Sapphire Reserve ($795): Best for travel protections (the strongest in the segment), Chase Sapphire Lounge access in select airports, Priority Pass, and Ultimate Rewards transfer partners including Hyatt and United. The Sapphire Reserve costs $200 more than the Strata Elite and includes Hyatt, which is the single most valuable hotel transfer partner in the U.S. ecosystem. If you redeem Hyatt points, the Sapphire Reserve usually wins on hotel side; if you don't, the Strata Elite's transfer list is broader on the airline side.
Capital One Venture X ($395): Best for value-per-dollar at the bottom of the premium tier. Priority Pass and Capital One Lounges, $300 Capital One Travel credit, 10,000-mile anniversary bonus, 2x earning on every purchase. The Venture X is the right call for travelers who want a clean premium card without managing portal-locked credits. The Strata Elite earns more on hotels and cars if you use the portal, and its transfer partner list is deeper.

The $595 Question at Three Usage Profiles
Here's how the card plays out at three real-world usage profiles. I'm not putting a cents-per-point value on the points, because what a ThankYou Point is worth depends on how you redeem it.
Light Traveler: 2 Trips a Year
Say you book one two-night hotel stay of $300 or more a year through Citi Travel, take a Blacklane ride in each half of the year and use the Splurge Credit at Best Buy or American Airlines. That's the $300 hotel benefit, $200 in Blacklane credits and $200 in Splurge Credit against the $595 fee, before Priority Pass, the Admirals Club passes or any points.
If you actually use the credits and book through the portal, the card covers its fee even at modest travel volume.
Regular Traveler: 4-6 Trips a Year
Same credits, plus more spending at the high rates. Say you put $6,000 a year of hotels and $6,000 of flights on cititravel.com: that's 72,000 points at 12x and 36,000 at 6x, less the part of one stay the hotel benefit covers.
This is the profile the Strata Elite is built for. The 12x on portal hotels outpaces every card compared above, and the transfer partner list can stretch the resulting points further than cash redemptions do.
Frequent Traveler: 10+ Trips a Year, Status-Loyal
If you're a Marriott Titanium, Hyatt Globalist, or AA Executive Platinum, you almost never book through Citi Travel because you'd lose status night credit. That collapses the 12x to 1.5x on direct bookings, and the $300 hotel benefit goes unused. The math gets weaker, not stronger, at high travel volume, which is the counterintuitive part of this card.
For status-loyal frequent travelers, the Sapphire Reserve (for Hyatt) or the Amex Platinum (for Delta and broader lounge access) usually wins. The Strata Elite is sharper for the regular-traveler profile than for the road-warrior one.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- 12x on hotels, car rentals and attractions and 6x on air booked through Citi Travel, plus 6x at restaurants on Citi Nights.
- A $300 hotel benefit, $200 Splurge Credit and $200 Blacklane credit each calendar year.
- Priority Pass Select plus four Admirals Club passes a year.
- Strong transfer partner list for award flights (Avianca, Cathay, Turkish, Virgin Atlantic, KrisFlyer).
- No foreign transaction fees, plus trip delay, trip cancellation and lost luggage protection.
- Earns the same ThankYou Points as the Strata Premier and Custom Cash, for cardholders already in the ThankYou ecosystem. (The Custom Cash has been closed to new applicants since May 28, 2026.)
Cons
- 12x earning and the $300 hotel benefit both lock to Citi Travel; status-loyal travelers won't capture them.
- The lounge network is smaller than the Amex Platinum's, and the Admirals Club passes stop at four a year.
- ThankYou's transfer partner list excludes Hyatt, Marriott, and Delta.
- The Splurge Credit only works at five brands, and you have to activate your two picks.
- The current welcome offer requires $6,000 in purchases in the first 3 months, which not every cardholder can hit organically.
Who Should Get the Strata Elite
Great Fit For
- Travelers who already carry the Strata Premier or Custom Cash and want to upgrade their ThankYou earning ceiling. (The Custom Cash has been closed to new applicants since May 28, 2026.)
- Price-shopping travelers who book hotels through whichever portal is cheapest, and who don't pursue hotel status.
- Award-flight enthusiasts who value Avianca, Turkish, Cathay, and Virgin Atlantic transfer access in one card.
- Mid-volume travelers (4-6 trips a year) who can use the $300 hotel benefit, $200 Splurge Credit and $200 Blacklane credit in full.
Not Ideal For
- Hotel status-loyalists. The Sapphire Reserve (with Hyatt access) or a co-branded Marriott/Hilton/Hyatt premium card will outperform here.
- Travelers who want the biggest lounge network. Look at the Amex Platinum, or compare Priority Pass options in our best Priority Pass cards roundup.
- Travelers loyal to Delta for award redemptions. Citi's transfer list doesn't include Delta SkyMiles, though it does include American's AAdvantage.
- Anyone who won't actively manage three credits. If you've ever forgotten to use an airline credit in December, the Strata Elite's three-credit structure will frustrate you the same way.
Final Verdict
The Citi Strata Elite is the right card for the regular traveler who isn't married to a hotel chain and who values award flights more than lounge access. At $595, the three credits can cover the fee on their own for anyone who uses them in full, and the 12x portal earning and ThankYou transfer partners do the rest. If you're a hotel-status loyalist or a road warrior who lives in lounges, look at the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Amex Platinum instead. If you want a cheaper premium card with cleaner math, the Capital One Venture X at $395 is the better starting point. But for the right profile, the Strata Elite is the most interesting flagship of 2026, and the one most worth a second look. If you want a no-fuss alternative on the way there, you can apply for the Capital One Venture or the Chase Sapphire Preferred and earn flexible points without committing to a $595 fee.
Updated 2026-09-28: Citi stopped accepting applications for the Custom Cash on May 28, 2026, per its Custom Cash page; existing cardmembers keep the card. We noted that where this article suggests the card and removed any offer or apply link for it.
Updated October 1, 2026: we corrected the earning rates (3x applies to restaurants outside Citi Nights, not to direct travel), the Splurge Credit to $200 and its brands, and added the Blacklane credit, Priority Pass and the current welcome offer, all from Citi's Strata Elite page. We also corrected the AAdvantage transfer claim and removed math built on the old figures.
