Key Points

  • United's checked bag fees depend on when you bought your ticket and where you're flying, so run your own route in United's calculator.
  • Chase's United Explorer page lists a free first checked bag, and the United Quest and United Club pages list free first and second checked bags.
  • On all three Chase pages the benefit covers the primary cardmember and one companion on the same reservation, on United- and United Express-operated flights only.

United checked bag fees depend on when you bought your ticket and where you're flying. For one sample flight (Newark to Los Angeles, Economy, November 30, 2026), United's calculator showed $50 for the first bag and $60 for the second, or $45 and $55 if you prepay.

Status and three Chase cards change that picture. Chase's United Explorer page lists a free first checked bag, and the United Quest and United Club pages list free first and second bags. Each comes with conditions on who qualifies, which flights count and how you pay. Here's what United's page says about fees, what lowers them, and what each card page spells out.

What United Charges to Check a Bag

United's checked bags page says fee changes depend on when you bought your ticket and where you're flying, and it sends you to a baggage fee calculator. It lists increases for tickets purchased on or after April 3, 2026 (domestic flights, short flights between the U.S. and Latin America, and flights between the U.S. and Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico). Later dates apply to other regions: May 12, 2026 for many flights between the U.S. and Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, and July 21, 2026 for flights between the U.S. and Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines and for flights between countries in Asia.

On the sample flight, the calculator listed a standard fee and a prepaid fee for each bag, at up to 50 pounds (23 kg) per bag. Treat that as one data point, not a rate card, and run your own route and date before you budget.

Basic Economy tickets include one personal item and no carry-on bag, so if you bring one, you must check it for a fee. For tickets purchased on or after April 3, 2026, United's page says that fee starts at $50 if you check it in the airport lobby and $75 if you check it at the gate.

United's page gives the maximum checked bag size as 62 total inches including handles and wheels. The weight limit is 50 pounds (23 kg) in Economy and Premium Economy and 70 pounds (32 kg) in United Business, United First and United Polaris business class. If your cabin and your MileagePlus status have different limits, United goes by the larger one.

Ways to Pay Less Without a Card

Start with prepaying. United's page says that on United and United Express flights within the U.S., you can use miles to pay bag fees before check-in. The calculator page adds that savings may apply when you buy checked bags online at least 24 hours before departure.

Status helps too. United's page says a Premier member and up to nine others on the same itinerary can check bags free on United- and United Express-operated flights. For Economy travel between the U.S. and the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, its chart lists 1 bag for Premier Silver, 2 for Premier Gold, and 3 for Premier Platinum and Premier 1K, at 70 pounds each. If you qualify for more than one exemption, the larger one applies.

Which Chase United Cards List Free Bags

Here's what each Chase page lists, with United's calculator results for the sample flight:

  • United Explorer Card: a free first checked bag. The calculator showed $0 for the first bag, and $60 standard or $55 prepaid for the second. Chase lists a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $150.
  • United Quest Card: free first and second checked bags. The calculator showed $0 for both. Chase lists a $350 annual fee.
  • United Club Card: free first and second checked bags. The calculator showed $0 for both. Chase lists a $695 annual fee, and United's calculator labels this card United Club Infinite.

The Conditions Chase Prints

The offer details on all three pages use the same conditions. The primary cardmember and one traveling companion on the same reservation are each eligible. Authorized users are only eligible if they're on the same reservation as the primary cardmember.

To get the free bags, the primary cardmember must use the card to purchase the ticket and include their MileagePlus number in the reservation. Chase waives the purchase requirement for flights completed during the 90 days following the account open date. Chase asks you to allow 2 weeks after account opening for the free bags to appear on eligible United reservations.

The benefit is only available on United- and United Express-operated flights, and codeshare partner-operated flights aren't eligible. Service charges for oversized, overweight and extra baggage may apply. Cardmembers already exempt from other checked baggage service charges won't receive additional free bags. United's page lines up with this: the airline on your first segment sets the fees for the whole trip, and waivers for MileagePlus Chase card members "may not apply on our partner airlines."

Picking a Card and What to Do Next

Count the bags you check per person. If it's one, the Explorer page lists that benefit. If it's two, the Quest and United Club pages list both. On the sample flight, the Explorer cardholder's second bag was $60 standard.

Before you apply, run your own route in United's calculator under the card's name. Then check Chase's page for the current offer and fee, confirm your flights are United- or United Express-operated, and plan to buy the ticket with the card once the 90-day window ends.
