Key Points

  • The Explorer and United Business cards list a free first checked bag, while the Quest, Club and Club Business cards list free first and second bags.
  • Chase words the Explorer and Quest bag benefit for United-operated flights, with your MileagePlus number on the reservation and the ticket bought from United with the card.
  • Chase waives the purchase requirement for flights in the first 90 days after account opening, and the Gateway card earns two first checked bags after $10,000 in a calendar year.

Chase's United cards give you a free checked bag on flights United itself operates. That's the line that matters when you book with miles: Chase words the Explorer and Quest bag benefit for "United-operated flights," with your MileagePlus number on the reservation and the ticket bought from United with your card. So the first thing to check on any itinerary, cash or award, is who actually flies each segment.

I get why this trips people up. MileagePlus miles book Star Alliance partners, and a partner seat can sit on the same United reservation as a United flight. This guide covers which Chase United cards include bags, the exact conditions Chase prints, and what to check before you count on a free bag on a trip booked with miles. Everything comes from Chase's card pages and Chase's United cards site, read on October 9, 2026.

Which United Cards Include Free Checked Bags

Here's what each card's page lists as of October 9, 2026. Our Chase United card lineup guide covers the rest of what each card does.

  • United Explorer Card ($0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $150): a free first standard checked bag for the primary cardmember and one companion on the same reservation, worth up to $50 each way per person, which Chase puts at up to $200 per roundtrip.
  • United Quest Card ($350): free first and second standard checked bags for the primary cardmember and one companion, worth up to $50 for the first bag and up to $60 for the second, each way per person. Chase puts that at up to $440 per roundtrip.
  • United Club Card ($695): free first and second standard checked bags for the primary cardmember and one companion, up to $440 per roundtrip by Chase's count.
  • United Gateway Card ($0): two first standard checked bags on United- or United Express-operated flights, earned after you spend $10,000 in a calendar year.
  • United Business Card ($150): Chase's United card page lists a free first checked bag.
  • United Club Business Card ($695): free first and second standard checked bags for the primary cardmember and one companion, up to $440 per roundtrip.

If bags are the main reason you want a United card, our United Explorer Card review and United Quest Card review run the full math on each fee.

The Three Conditions Chase Prints

On the Explorer and Quest pages, Chase spells the benefit out in one sentence. Pull it apart and there are three conditions.

  1. The flight is United-operated. Not "a United flight number." Operated by United.
  2. Your MileagePlus number is on the reservation. The primary cardmember adds it, and the companion has to be on the same reservation to get a bag too.
  3. You bought the ticket from United with the card. Chase says the cardmember "purchases their tickets from United with their card."

There's one big exception. Chase says the purchase requirement is waived for flights during the 90 days from account opening. In that window, what's left is a United-operated flight with your MileagePlus number on the reservation.

Partner-Operated Flights on a Miles Booking

Here's where award bookings get messy. Say you use MileagePlus miles for a Newark to Munich trip and the outbound segment is operated by Lufthansa. That segment isn't a United-operated flight, so it falls outside the benefit as Chase describes it, even though you booked it through United.

The fix is simple: look at the "operated by" line for every segment before you pack. A mixed itinerary, with United on one leg and a partner on another, is exactly the kind of trip where a free bag on one leg tells you nothing about the next.

Gateway cardholders get slightly different wording. Chase's Gateway page says the earned bags apply on United- or United Express-operated flights. Read your own card's line rather than borrowing another card's.

Award Tickets on United Flights

On an award ticket for a flight United does operate, start with Chase's own sentence. It's written around tickets bought from United with the card, and for complete details Chase sends you to united.com/ChaseBag. Read that page before your trip, not at the check-in counter.

Two parts of Chase's wording help on an award trip. Chase waives the purchase requirement for flights during the 90 days from account opening, so for those flights the MileagePlus number on the reservation is the piece to get right. And the bag covers one companion traveling on the same reservation, so book the two of you on one reservation.

What I'd Actually Do

If you fly United-operated flights a few times a year and check a bag, the Explorer is where I'd start: one free bag each for you and a companion covers the common case at $150 after the first year. Check two bags often, and the Quest's second bag starts to earn its $350.

Booking mostly partner awards with your miles? Then the bag benefit won't carry the card for you, because those segments sit outside the United-operated flights Chase names. Check the operating airline's bag rules before you book, and pick a card for its other benefits.
