United Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321neo Coastliner, a premium-heavy narrowbody that's now set to enter service in early 2027. It'll start on Newark Liberty (EWR) to Los Angeles (LAX) and Newark to San Francisco (SFO).
The jet carries 20 Polaris business-class suites and 12 Premium Plus recliners. It's slated to enter service on those routes in early 2027.
What Happened With the United A321neo Coastliner
United had hoped to get the Coastliner flying sooner, but delays at Airbus pushed its debut back to early 2027. The first aircraft is now with the airline, and its first scheduled flights are slated for early next year.
United has said it plans to fly the Coastliner exclusively between its West Coast hubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles and Newark and the New York area. The launch routes are Newark to Los Angeles and Newark to San Francisco. The Coastliner is also likely to show up at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) once United returns to flying there. It's expected to replace Boeing 757-200s on United's premium transcontinental flying.
What's on Board
The cabin is built around the front of the plane. Here's how the seats break down:
- Polaris: 20 lie-flat business-class suites, all with aisle access. United says the suites are wider at the shoulder and elbow than similar competitor products and use semi-translucent dividers.
- Premium Plus: 12 recliners, United's premium economy, positioned between Polaris and economy. United calls it a first for narrowbody domestic flights.
- Economy: 129 seats. United removed three seats from the standard configuration of the plane to make room for a snack bar in the rear of the plane, where economy customers can grab a snack or non-alcoholic drink anytime during the flight.
For the first time, customers flying in United Polaris on this aircraft can get access to the United Polaris lounge. The jet also has Starlink Wi-Fi.

What the Order Looks Like
United has 50 Coastliners on order, alongside 50 Airbus A321XLRs.

The first routes are Newark to Los Angeles and Newark to San Francisco, each with 20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus recliners on board, plus a snack bar in economy where customers can grab a snack or non-alcoholic drink. Service is due to start in early 2027 after the Airbus delays. JFK is a likely next stop once United is back there.
