As of October 1, 2026, North American Lyft riders can use the Lyft app they already have to request rides in Europe, starting with early access in Barcelona and Hamburg. Lyft announced the launch on September 30 and says the app will reach London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Athens and Warsaw over the course of October.
By the end of October, Lyft says riders visiting Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, England, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, France and Germany will be able to use it. You use the same app, the same account and the same payment methods you use at home.
What Lyft Announced
In its September 30 announcement, Lyft said riders can now use one app in the U.S., Canada and Europe, with nothing new to download. The rollout builds on a beta test of the Lyft app in Europe this past summer.
"Millions of riders across North America trust Lyft to get them where they're going every day. Now that same app works the moment they land in Europe," said Sid Patil, Lyft's Chief Rideshare and Marketplace Officer.
Who's Actually Driving
Lyft built a new backend that connects the Lyft rider app to a third-party marketplace and gives riders access to that marketplace's drivers. Lyft says this launch is the first use of that framework, built for its expansion into Europe.
For now, Europeans who already ride with Freenow by Lyft or Gett by Lyft can keep using those apps. For drivers on those platforms, Lyft frames the launch as extra demand from North American travelers.
Paying for Rides in Europe
Lyft says you can pay with the payment methods already saved to your account. It also says that in the next year, riders will be able to choose whether to pay in their home currency, such as U.S. dollars, or in the local currency where they took the ride, such as euros.
Until that choice arrives, check the fare and currency before you book. If you pay with a card that charges foreign transaction fees, this is the time to switch to one that doesn't.
What It Means for Your Lyft Perks
Several U.S. cards and loyalty programs attach benefits to Lyft rides, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve's Lyft credit and 5x points or the Citi / AAdvantage Executive's Lyft credit. Check your card's or program's own terms before you count on a credit or bonus for a ride in Paris or London, and look at the ride receipt afterward.
What You Should Do
- Check your city's timing. Barcelona and Hamburg are first, and the rest arrive through October, so open the app on arrival and confirm it works where you are before you rely on it.
- Pay with a no-foreign-transaction-fee card saved in the app.
- Have a backup. In early access, keep a second app or the local taxi rank as a fallback until you've seen Lyft work in your city.
The Bottom Line
If you already use Lyft at home, it now works in Barcelona and Hamburg, and Lyft says it will work across the countries it lists by the end of October, with your existing account and saved cards. Lyft says a choice to pay in your home currency is coming in the next year. How your card credits and loyalty earnings apply abroad is a question for each program's terms.
