Key Points

  • Flying Blue now charges €15 for each Experience Point (XP) earned through sustainable aviation fuel contributions, up from €10.
  • The XP are no longer rounded, so a €14 contribution earns none and a €28 contribution earns one.
  • If you use fuel contributions to close a status gap, compare other ways to earn XP before your qualification period ends.

Earning Flying Blue elite status through sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) contributions just got 50% more expensive. Each Experience Point (XP) now takes €15 in contributions, up from €10. Flying Blue also stopped rounding, which makes small contributions worth less.

What Changed

Flying Blue lets members pay toward SAF to offset the emissions from a flight, and those contributions earn XP, the points that decide elite status. Before the change, each €10 earned 1 XP. Now it takes €15.

How the Rounding Works

Flying Blue no longer rounds XP on these contributions. If a short-haul economy flight offers a €14 contribution, it earns no XP. A €28 contribution earns 1.

That means small contributions cost more than the headline 50% suggests.

What It Means for Status Chasers

If you use SAF contributions to close a gap near the end of a qualification period, that shortcut now costs 50% more.

Before your qualification period ends, price a short flight against the contribution you'd need for the remaining XP. In the U.S., the Air France KLM Visa Signature card is another way to earn XP. Our Flying Blue miles guide covers how the program works for U.S. travelers.
