The Venture X's higher fee is worth it if you'll spend its $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and use airport lounges. If you won't, the Venture earns the same 2 miles per dollar on everyday spending for less. The Venture's annual fee is $95 and the Venture X's is $395.

The Venture X also adds 10,000 bonus miles every anniversary, which Capital One says equal $100 toward travel. But the credit only works on Capital One Travel bookings, and the lounge access that makes the card famous is included only for the primary cardholder; authorized users need a paid add-on. I read both cards' pages, Capital One's rewards terms and its lounge terms on September 30, 2026. Here's how the two compare, and which one I'd pick for which kind of traveler.

The Short Answer

Get the Venture X if you'll book at least $300 of travel a year through Capital One Travel and you'd use an airport lounge. The $300 credit pays for those bookings, the 10,000 anniversary miles come on top, and the lounges are the upgrade.

Get the Venture if you'd rather book travel wherever it's cheapest, rarely use lounges, or want the lower fee. You still earn 2x on everything and can move miles to Capital One's travel partners. If you're also weighing Chase, our Sapphire Preferred vs. Venture comparison covers that matchup.

Side by Side: What Each Card Gives You

Here's each card as Capital One's own pages show them today.

Capital One Venture Rewards ($95 annual fee):

  • 2 miles per dollar on every purchase.
  • 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.
  • Welcome offer: 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in purchases in the first 3 months, plus a one-time $300 Capital One Travel stays credit for hotels and vacation rentals in the first cardholder year. Capital One labels this a limited-time offer.
  • Up to a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, once every 4 years.
  • Hertz Five Star status, and a $50 experience credit on Lifestyle Collection stays.

Capital One Venture X Rewards ($395 annual fee):

  • 2 miles per dollar on every purchase.
  • 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars, and 5 miles per dollar on flights and vacation rentals, booked through Capital One Travel.
  • Welcome offer: 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in purchases in the first 3 months.
  • A $300 Capital One Travel credit every year, and 10,000 bonus miles after each account anniversary.
  • Capital One Lounges and Landings, plus Priority Pass lounges, for the primary cardholder.
  • Up to a $120 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, Hertz President's Circle status, a $100 experience credit on Premier Collection stays and cell phone protection up to $800.

Both cards have no foreign transaction fees, and Capital One says both cards' miles don't expire for the life of the account. The purchase APR on both is 19.74% to 28.74% variable.

The Fee Math

Start with the fees: $95 a year for the Venture and $395 for the Venture X.

The $300 annual Capital One Travel credit only pays you back if you use it. Capital One's terms say it applies "toward purchases made through Capital One Travel," expires on your next account anniversary, and doesn't earn miles. If you normally book flights and hotels directly with the airline or hotel, the credit pushes you into a portal you might not otherwise use, so compare the portal price with booking direct before you spend it.

Then there are the 10,000 anniversary miles. Capital One's rewards terms price travel redemptions at 100 miles per dollar: "if your travel purchase costs $200, you would multiply that by 100 to determine you need 20,000 miles." Say you'd book a $300 hotel stay through Capital One Travel anyway. Capital One's $300 annual credit for Capital One Travel bookings goes toward that, and at that 100-miles-per-dollar rate the 10,000 anniversary miles would cover another $100 of travel. In that case the Venture X costs you less than the Venture before you count a single lounge visit.

Now say you never book through Capital One Travel. The credit goes unused, and you're paying the higher fee for lounges, the anniversary miles and a stronger portal earn rate you won't touch. That's the case where the Venture wins.

Earning: Identical Everywhere Except the Portal

Off the portal, the two cards are the same. Groceries, gas, dining, utilities and everything else earn 2 miles per dollar on both.

On Capital One Travel bookings, the Venture X pulls ahead. Hotels and rental cars earn 10x instead of 5x, and flights earn 5x on the Venture X. The Venture's 5x covers hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, and flights earn its everyday 2x.

One detail from the Venture X terms: hotel incidentals, upgrades and other charges made outside Capital One Travel earn the standard 2x, not the portal rate. Only the booking itself earns 10x or 5x.

Redeeming: The Same Miles Either Way

Both cards earn Capital One miles, so the redemption side is a wash. The Venture X rewards terms describe two ways to use miles on travel, both at 100 miles per dollar. You can book through Capital One Travel and pay with miles, or you can book anywhere with the card and then erase the charge with miles, as long as you redeem within 90 days of the purchase posting.

Capital One counts purchases from airlines, hotels, rail lines, car rental agencies, limousine services, bus lines, cruise lines, taxis, travel agents and time shares as travel for that purpose, based on how the merchant codes the charge. You can also redeem for cash or gift cards, at rates Capital One sets and can change.

The other option is transferring miles to Capital One's travel loyalty partners, which both cards' pages offer and the Venture X page puts at 15+ programs. What a transferred mile is worth then depends on that partner's award prices.

Lounges: The Real Upgrade, With Limits

This is where the two cards stop being similar. The Venture X gets the primary cardholder into Capital One Lounges and Landings and into Priority Pass lounges, which Capital One says number 1,300+ worldwide.

Capital One's newsroom listed its lounges on August 31, 2026 at DFW, IAD, DEN, LAS and JFK, with Capital One Landings at DCA and LGA.

Read the guest rules before you count on bringing anyone. Capital One's airport lounge terms, updated July 8, 2026, charge $35 per visit per guest at Priority Pass lounges. At Capital One Lounges and Landings, guests cost $45 per visit for adults 18 and older and $25 for guests 17 and under, and children under two are free.

Free guests (up to 2 at Capital One Lounges and 1 at Landings) only come once you spend at least $75,000 on purchases on the account in a calendar year, and that perk doesn't extend to Priority Pass. Authorized users don't get lounge access at all unless you pay a $125 annual lounge access fee for each one.

So if you usually travel as a couple or a family, add those guest costs to your math. Our look at whether the Venture X is worth it goes deeper on how much lounge value you'll realistically use.

Welcome Offers and the 48-Month Rule

Right now both cards offer 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in 3 months, and the Venture adds a $300 stays credit for your first year. We covered that Venture offer and its hotel credit when it launched.

The rules aren't symmetrical, and that matters if you ever want both cards. The Venture's application terms say "You are not eligible for this product if you have received a new cardmember bonus for the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months." The Venture X's application terms say "Existing or previous cardmembers are not eligible for this product if they have received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past 48 months."

In practice, that means order matters. The Venture X's rule names a Venture X bonus, and the Venture's rule names a bonus from either card. So if you earn the Venture X bonus first, the Venture's terms put the Venture itself out of reach for 48 months.

Which Card Fits Which Traveler

Pick the Venture X if you fly a few times a year through a hub with a Capital One Lounge or a Priority Pass lounge you like, you're comfortable booking at least $300 a year through Capital One Travel, and you travel solo or can live with the guest fees. The Capital One Venture X Rewards is the better card for you.

Pick the Venture if you like to book direct, want a simple 2x card without a portal habit to build, or don't care about lounges. At $95 a year, the Capital One Venture Rewards earns the same 2x on everyday spending, and its current offer includes a $300 first-year stays credit. Our full Venture review walks through where it shines.

If you want both, open the Venture first, for the 48-month reason above.

The Verdict

If you'll use the $300 travel credit every year, the Venture X is the one to get, because the credit comes back to you as travel, with the lounges and anniversary miles on top. If you won't book through Capital One Travel, the $300 credit is money you'll leave on the table, and the Venture is the smarter $95 card for the same 2x earning.
