The cheapest hotel award nights sit at the bottom of each program's chart: World of Hyatt starts at 3,000 points a night in Category 1, and Wyndham Rewards starts at 5,000 points a night on its lowest tier. Hilton and Marriott price award nights against the cash rate, so check the exact hotel and dates before you plan around any number.
The best cents-per-point math almost always lives at the budget end. A Hampton Inn near the airport, a Hyatt Place in a secondary city or a La Quinta on a Tuesday does the quiet heavy lifting in a real travel year. This guide covers the cheapest awards at each major program, the cards that earn fast at each chain, the transfers that fund them and when to just pay cash.
The Thesis: Cheap Awards Beat Aspirational Redemptions for Budget Stays
The conventional wisdom says you should hoard points for high-end redemptions because the cents-per-point math looks better on a $700 room than a $90 one. That's true on paper. It's also irrelevant if your trip is a Tuesday night in Cleveland and the cash rate is $89.
The real question is what the lowest award rate at a brand is today and whether your balance covers it. Say a Hampton Inn night costs 5,000 points against a $115 cash rate. That's about 2.3 cents per point. A 25,000-point beach property against a $400 rate is 1.6 cents per point, so the Hampton Inn wins on rate.
Stack enough of those budget redemptions over a year and you've covered most of your work travel out of points you didn't know how to spend.
The Cheapest Award Rates at Each Major Program
Here's where the floor sits at the five chains that matter, plus Choice, which fills the gaps in smaller markets.
Hilton Honors
Hilton prices award nights against the cash rate, so the same Hampton Inn can cost very different amounts on different dates. Search Hampton Inn, Tru by Hilton and Home2 Suites first, because they're Hilton's budget end.
Hilton's fifth-night-free benefit is the kicker. It applies to reward stays booked entirely with points, so five consecutive nights cost the points for four. Check Hilton's terms for the tiers that qualify, and note that the Surpass card below includes Gold status.
World of Hyatt
Hyatt is the exception to the dynamic-pricing trend. It publishes a chart with fixed thresholds, and since May 2026 each of the eight categories has five price levels, from Lowest to Top. Category 1 runs from 3,000 to 9,000 points a night, Category 2 from 6,000 to 15,000 and Category 3 from 8,000 to 20,000.
Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels cluster in the lower categories, so look up the hotel's category before you search dates. Hyatt House suites have kitchens, which matters on longer stays, and the points-and-cash option lets you split the difference when you're short. Our Hyatt award chart guide has the full table.
Marriott Bonvoy
Marriott also prices award nights by date, so there's no fixed floor to quote. Fairfield by Marriott is the volume play. Courtyard sits a notch up, and Four Points by Sheraton varies by market.
Bonvoy's budget-end value comes from free-night awards. The Bonvoy Boundless card's anniversary free night covers a stay of up to 35,000 points, which is a good fit for a Fairfield or Courtyard night. Marriott also gives a fifth night free when you book five consecutive award nights at the same hotel.
IHG One Rewards
IHG's budget brands are Holiday Inn Express, Candlewood Suites and Avid. Award prices move by date, so price the property rather than assuming a band.
The IHG One Rewards Premier card's Anniversary Free Night is the move. For new applicants it carries a 50,000-point redemption cap, which is plenty for a midweek Holiday Inn Express stay where the cash rate is $140 or more. The same card gives a fourth Reward Night free when you redeem points for four consecutive nights.
Wyndham Rewards
Wyndham's flat-rate chart makes it the easiest program here to price. Free nights price in four tiers at 5,000, 15,000, 30,000 and 45,000 points per night, and the lowest tier starts at 5,000 points instead of the old 7,500. Wyndham redistributed hotels across the four tiers on September 15, 2026 and does not publish which brands or properties sit in which tier, so price the property rather than assuming its band.
Search the budget brands first, La Quinta, Days Inn and Super 8 among them, and check which tier the specific hotel lands in. The Vacasa partnership is worth knowing too: Wyndham points book entire vacation rentals, priced per bedroom per night on the same four tiers. That means a four-bedroom house pays the property's tier four times.
Choice Privileges
Choice covers Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn and Quality Inn, a deep bench of budget hotels in smaller markets. If your travel involves road trips through places where a Hyatt doesn't exist, Choice fills the gap. Capital One miles transfer to Choice at 1:1, which funds a Choice balance without a co-brand card.
The Cards That Earn Fast at Each Chain
You don't need a wallet full of co-brands to play this game. You need one or two that match your travel pattern.
Hilton Honors Surpass earns 12X at Hilton hotels and resorts and includes Gold status. Check American Express for the current annual fee and free-night terms, and see our Surpass card review for the full picture.
World of Hyatt Credit Card has a $95 annual fee, an anniversary free night and 5 tier-qualifying nights credited toward status each year. Chase lists up to 9X total points at Hyatt hotels once Hyatt's own earning is included.
Marriott Bonvoy Boundless has a $95 annual fee, earns 6X at Marriott and gives an annual free night worth up to 35,000 points.
IHG One Rewards Premier earns 10X at IHG and, for new applicants, includes an Anniversary Free Night with a 50,000-point redemption cap, plus a fourth Reward Night free on four consecutive award nights. Its annual fee for new applicants is $150.
Wyndham Rewards Earner Plus earns 6X at Hotels by Wyndham, comes with Diamond status for the first 12 months and Platinum after that, and runs a $95 annual fee. That first-year Diamond status (early check-in, late checkout, suite upgrades when available) pulls weight at Wyndham's better La Quinta and Wyndham Garden properties.
The Transfer-Partner Angle: When Flexible Currencies Beat Co-Brands
If you've got Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One or Bilt points sitting around, you've got budget-hotel points without realizing it.
Amex Membership Rewards to Hilton transfers at 1:2, so 1,000 Membership Rewards points become 2,000 Hilton points. That's a very cheap way to fund a Hampton Inn night, and I'll do it for a one-night work stay without thinking.
Chase Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt transfers at 4:3 as of October 1, 2026 for Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred cardmembers, so 1,000 points become 750 Hyatt points. It's still the headline transfer partnership for budget hotels, because Hyatt's lowest category is cheap and the chart is fixed.
Bilt to Hyatt transfers 1:1 through December 31, 2026 and drops to 4:3 on January 1, 2027. You can earn Bilt points on rent, so a payment you were making anyway funds Hyatt nights.
Capital One miles to Choice and Capital One to Wyndham both transfer 1:1. They're the under-the-radar pairings that make a Venture X make sense for budget-hotel chasers.
The decision rule I use: if I'm a high-volume earner at one chain, the co-brand pays for itself in the free night alone. If I'm a low-volume hotel earner who books across chains, flexible transfers (especially Chase to Hyatt and Amex to Hilton) cover the same ground without committing me to one brand.
Free Nights on Longer Stays
The free-night benefits on multi-night award stays are the most overlooked leverage in budget-hotel points. Most blogs treat them as a footnote.
Say a Hampton Inn costs 10,000 points a night. Booked as a five-night award stay with Hilton's fifth night free, you pay for four nights and sleep five. Marriott's fifth-night-free benefit on five consecutive award nights works the same way, and the IHG Premier card's fourth Reward Night free does it at four.
If your travel includes four- or five-night work stays (conferences, training weeks, road trips with a planned midpoint), this is where to deploy your Hilton, Marriott and IHG balances first.
What Doesn't Work: Rooms Too Cheap for Points
Very cheap motels rarely justify points. When a room's cash rate is under $70 and you can earn 2X to 3X on a flexible card by paying for it, that's the play.
Points are best deployed against $120-and-up rooms, where a chain's bottom-of-chart award rate translates into the strongest cents per point.
What I'd Actually Do
If you're starting from scratch and want a budget-hotel stash that covers most real-world travel, here's the order I'd go in. Open a Chase Sapphire Preferred for the Hyatt transfer relationship. Add a Hilton Honors Surpass if Hampton Inn properties are on your regular work-travel circuit.
That two-card combo, plus a flexible Amex or Capital One earner you might already hold, covers the entire budget hotel landscape. Stack the welcome bonuses, transfer to Hyatt for lowest-category Hyatt Place nights, and redeem Hilton for fifth-night-free stays. The aspirational suite stays will still be there when you're ready.
