Alaska Airlines is adding new food to its Main Cabin pre-order menu for flights starting September 2. The carrier announced the change on August 31. Two of the additions come from Seattle brands Alaska already works with: Ellenos, the yogurt maker, and Evergreens, the salad chain. Alaska describes the update as a refresh of its domestic Main Cabin offering, built around what it calls hometown flavors.

The useful part is not the ingredient list. It is the routing. Several of the new items load in one direction only, and the two new warm breakfast sandwiches are tied to how far you are flying. What you see in the app depends on your flight, not just on your appetite.

What Alaska added to the Main Cabin menu

According to the airline's announcement, the new pre-order items are:

  • Ellenos yogurt breakfast plate, with marionberry yogurt, a blueberry tea loaf and fresh fruit.
  • Pretzel bun chicken sausage breakfast sandwich, with a fried egg, a chicken sausage patty and Havarti cheese.
  • Turkey bacon and Tillamook cheddar breakfast sandwich, with a fried egg, on a brioche bun.
  • Evergreens spicy kale Caesar salad, with romaine, kale, diced chicken breast, grape tomatoes, jalapenos, aged parmesan, Caesar dressing, sunflower seeds and lemon.
  • Warm tamari tofu bowl, plant based and made without gluten ingredients, with stir fried veggies over basmati rice.
  • Green curry with chicken, made with coconut milk and served over jasmine rice.
  • Chicken salad croissant sandwich, with house made lemon parsley chicken salad, apple slices and grapes.

The routing rules matter more than the menu

Alaska says the two warm breakfast sandwiches are debuting on most flights over 1,100 miles. Each one is also directional. The pretzel bun chicken sausage sandwich is offered only on eastbound domestic flights and westbound flights to Hawaii. The turkey bacon and Tillamook cheddar sandwich is offered only on westbound domestic flights and eastbound flights to Hawaii.

The green curry with chicken carries its own rule. Alaska says it is offered only on westbound and eastbound flights from Hawaii. So it is a Hawaii item rather than a mainland one.

That is a real constraint if you have a specific item in mind. Fly Seattle to the East Coast in the morning and the pretzel bun sandwich is on your list. Fly home the next week and it is the turkey bacon and cheddar instead. Neither is a lesser choice, but the app is the only place to confirm which one your flight is carrying.

How pre-ordering works

Pre-orders run through the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app, which Alaska calls its industry-leading pre-order program. The window opens 14 days before departure and closes roughly 20 hours before takeoff, per the airline. Alaska also says the program includes at least one hot meal option on flights over 1,100 miles.

The practical effect is that this menu rewards planning. Nothing here is a cart item you can decide on at 30,000 feet. If you book a flight the night before, the new food is not part of your trip.

Main Cabin food has been a live story across US carriers this year, and we have covered what American changed in its Main Cabin snack lineup separately. Alaska's version is a different bet. Rather than handing everyone something free, it is widening what a planner can buy.

What the partnership language actually tells you

Alaska's announcement includes a quote from Evergreens, and it is the standard shape for this kind of release.

"We're grateful to Alaska Airlines for championing Pacific Northwest brands and proud to bring a new Evergreens entree onboard," said Neil Harfert, CEO of Evergreens. "As a Seattle-founded company, this longstanding partnership allows us to provide travelers fresh, flavorful options that accommodate a variety of dietary preferences."

Strip out the partnership framing and one detail is worth keeping: dietary range. A plant based bowl made without gluten ingredients, a yogurt plate, two egg sandwiches and a chicken salad croissant cover more of a cabin than a single sandwich does. For a program that only works when you order days ahead, breadth is most of the value.

It also fits a pattern. Alaska has been changing a lot at once, including how status and partnerships work under Atmos Rewards. Food is the smallest of those changes and the one most passengers will notice first.

What to do before your next Alaska flight

The action here is short. Once your flight is inside 14 days, open the Alaska Hawaiian app and look at the menu for your specific flight and direction. If the item you want is there, order it then rather than waiting.

Set your own reminder for the day before departure. Alaska closes pre-orders roughly 20 hours out, which is earlier than most people expect. That cutoff, not availability, is what usually costs travelers the meal they wanted.

If Alaska is the carrier you fly most, the rest of the relationship is worth a look too. Our rundown of the best Alaska Airlines credit cards covers which one fits which kind of flyer, and it pairs naturally with a Main Cabin routine you are now planning two weeks in advance.
