Key Points

  • United will remove Premier qualifying flights from its status requirements on January 1, 2027, so points become the way to reach Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1K.
  • Silver, Gold and Platinum stay at 6,000, 12,000 and 18,000 PQP, Premier 1K rises from 28,000 to 32,000 PQP, and four United or United Express flights are still required.
  • Qualifying members with an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, get a PQP head start, and PlusPoints upgrades move to dynamic pricing for travel from February 1, 2027.

United is removing Premier qualifying flights (PQF) from its status rules on January 1, 2027, and Premier 1K will require 32,000 Premier qualifying points (PQP), up from 28,000. United posted the changes on its MileagePlus "what's new" page on October 13, 2026. Silver, Gold and Platinum keep their current point thresholds, the four-flight minimum stays, eligible United cardholders who qualify for 2027 status get a PQP head start, and PlusPoints upgrades move to dynamic pricing for travel from February 1, 2027.

What Changes on January 1, 2027

United says members will reach status by earning PQP on United, United Express and Star Alliance flights, or by spending with an eligible United card. The thresholds:

  • Premier Silver: 6,000 PQP.
  • Premier Gold: 12,000 PQP.
  • Premier Platinum: 18,000 PQP.
  • Premier 1K: 32,000 PQP.

The first three match the points-only thresholds United lists today. What goes away is the second route, where fewer points plus a set number of flights earned status. United's Premier page still shows that route for qualifying through December 31, 2026: 15 PQF with 5,000 PQP for Silver, 30 with 10,000 for Gold, 45 with 15,000 for Platinum and 60 with 22,000 for 1K. That page also lists the current 1K points-only figure of 28,000.

A member still has to take at least four United or United Express flights in 2027, so the flight count doesn't disappear entirely. It stops being a way to qualify with fewer points.

The Card Head Start

If you hold an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, and qualify for 2027 Premier status, United says you'll get 5% of the PQP needed to reach your earned status level. Its table lists 300 starter PQP for Silver, 600 for Gold and 900 for Platinum. United's December 2025 post gave the 2026 deposit to all members who had achieved Premier status the year before, while the October 13 post ties the head start to holding an eligible card.

Cards can also add PQP through everyday spending. United's October 13 post shows the United Explorer Card, which carries a $150 annual fee, earning up to 1,000 PQP. The United Quest Card, at $350 a year, earns up to 18,000 PQP, which United equates with Premier Platinum. The United Club Card, at $695 a year, earns up to 32,000 PQP, which United equates with Premier 1K.

December 31 is also the end date on the targeted Chase offers we covered for Explorer and Quest upgrades. Whether one of those offers makes sense is a separate question from the head start, and each depends on what the card costs you each year.

PlusPoints Move to Dynamic Pricing

For travel on or after February 1, 2027, United says the number of PlusPoints needed to upgrade may vary with demand and available seats. United had said in December 2025 that it would retire the fixed upgrade chart in February 2027, and the new post gives the starting date. That earlier post named demand and cabin among the factors.

What to Do Before the Year Ends

If you're chasing any Premier level this year, the new rules don't change your 2026 target, and the PQF route stays open until December 31. If you're planning 2027, the points threshold is the number to plan around, and Premier 1K now asks for 32,000 of them instead of 28,000.

If you want the card head start, the date to meet is December 31, 2026, for an eligible United card. United's page also carries a list of questions on authorized users, linked minors, challenge offers that continue into 2027 and PlusPoints exchanged for 2027 PQF. Check it if one of those applies to you.

United's status match for Delta and American elites, which closes to new requests on October 15, is a separate offer from these rules. Our article on the match has its terms. Before you plan around a card or an upgrade, check two numbers with United: the spending each card needs to reach its 2027 PQP maximum, and what a PlusPoints upgrade costs on your flight once dynamic pricing starts on February 1, 2027.
