As of October 1, 2026, United's website lists a new Base fare for United First and United Business, the cheapest of three fare options in those cabins. Base gets you the same onboard experience as everyone else up front, but seat selection costs extra, you get one checked bag instead of two, and you can't change or refund the ticket.
"Starting fall 2026, we're offering three fare options for United First and United Business," United says on its cabin page. The new Base fare is expected to go on sale in the coming weeks.
What Changed
United First is United's cabin on flights within the U.S. and to U.S. territories, including Alaska and Hawaii. United Business is the same idea on international flights between the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America. Both are getting three tiers: Base, Standard and Flexible.
Here's how United's fare table lays them out for United First:
- Base: seat selection for a fee, 1 checked bag, 1 carry-on bag, no flight changes, non-refundable.
- Standard: seat selection included, 2 checked bags, 1 carry-on bag, flight changes allowed, non-refundable.
- Flexible: seat selection included, 2 checked bags, 1 carry-on bag, flight changes allowed, fully refundable.
United Business uses the same three tiers with one more line: United's table shows United Club access for Base, Standard and Flexible alike.
United's own framing is that "no matter which tier you select, your fare will include the same elevated onboard experience offered in that cabin." The difference is everything around the seat.
Why This Matters
United announced the same base, standard and flexible structure for United Polaris and United Premium Plus on April 3, 2026. On the select transcontinental U.S. and longer Hawaii flights where the front cabin is branded Polaris, a base ticket still gets you into a United Club, while the Polaris lounge is for standard and flexible fares, which we covered in our United Club access guide. JetBlue sells its Main and EvenMore cabins in Base and Flex versions too, as laid out in our guide to JetBlue's fares.
For a United First flyer, Base trades away three things:
- Choosing your seat for free. On Base it's a paid add-on.
- The second checked bag. Base includes one.
- Flight changes. Standard allows them and Base doesn't. Neither is refundable; only Flexible is.
If you're booking a trip that's locked in, flying light and happy to pay for a seat if you want one, Base is the cheaper way into the front cabin. If plans could move, the Standard fare is the lowest tier that lets you change the flight.
What You Should Do
When Base shows up in search results, read the fare's row before you click. The price gap between Base and Standard is the number that matters: put the cost of a seat assignment and a second bag (if you'd check one) against it.
If you've always booked the cheapest first class fare on United and counted on two bags and a free seat pick, that habit now needs a second look. The cheapest first class fare on a route may soon be Base.
The Bottom Line
United First and United Business are getting Base, Standard and Flexible fares. Base drops free seat selection, the second checked bag and flight changes, and like Standard, it's non-refundable. United's page dates the three options to fall 2026, and Base is expected to reach booking in the coming weeks.
