Qatar Airways and Bilt just made it a lot cheaper to stockpile Avios, and a lot harder to spend them on anyone but yourself. Starting today, anyone holding a U.S. Qatar Airways credit card can earn 3 Avios per dollar on rent paid through Bilt, up to $50,000 a year. That's as many as 150,000 Avios annually, roughly what a U.S. to Middle East business class round trip costs, for the price of Bilt's 3% card-processing fee. It's a great deal on paper. But it lands right after Qatar quietly tightened who you're allowed to redeem those Avios for, so the earning boost and the new restriction really need to be understood together.
Key Points
- Holders of either U.S. Qatar Airways credit card can now earn 3 Avios per dollar on up to $50,000 of Bilt-processed rent per year, effectively buying Avios for about a penny each.
- Qatar Airways restricted nominee bookings in June, so a single qualifying transaction on a Qatar credit card is now required before you can redeem Avios for people outside your own account.
- Current Qatar cardholders should add their card to Bilt Wallet immediately and confirm they've completed a qualifying purchase before assuming they can still book awards for a spouse or family member.
How the New Rent Bonus Actually Works
Both U.S. Qatar cards qualify: the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Card and the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Card. Add your card to Bilt Wallet, set it as your rent payment method, and you'll earn 3 Avios per dollar on up to $50,000 of rent each calendar year, on top of Bilt's standard 3% fee for using a non-Bilt card. Run the math and $50,000 in rent costs $1,500 to net 150,000 Avios, about a penny apiece. That's a strong price for a currency that regularly prices Qsuites business class in the 70,000 to 90,000 range one-way. If you're not already earning Avios strategically, our guide to earning Qatar Airways miles through Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt transfer partners is worth a refresher before you commit rent dollars here.
Why the Card Route Might Beat Your Bilt Mastercard
Qatar joins Alaska, United, and Air France-KLM as airline cards that can earn on Bilt rent, and the earning rates aren't identical:
- Alaska, Air France-KLM, and Qatar all earn 3x on rent through their respective cards, at Bilt's standard 3% fee.
- United earns 2x.
- The Bilt Mastercard itself earns 1x on rent, with no processing fee at all.
Whether the Qatar card route beats putting rent on your Bilt Mastercard and transferring points later depends on how you value Bilt points versus paying the 3% fee upfront for direct Avios. Our Bilt transfer partners guide breaks down how Bilt points convert to Qatar, British Airways, and Iberia Avios if you want to compare the two paths side by side before deciding which card sits in your wallet as your primary rent payment method.
The Catch: Qatar Just Made It Harder to Book Awards for Other People
This is the part that changes the calculus. In June, Qatar tightened who a Privilege Club member can book awards for. Previously, members could redeem Avios for nearly anyone. Now, bookings are generally limited to the account holder, up to four adults added to "My List," or up to six people in a Family & Friends group, and new additions to either list are typically locked in for six months.
More importantly, to use those lists at all, your account needs to be at least 30 days old and you need to have completed either a flown Qatar or partner flight credited to Privilege Club, or an eligible Qatar credit card purchase. Transferring points in from Bilt, Amex, Chase, or Citi doesn't satisfy that requirement on its own. You can transfer in a mountain of Avios, but that alone won't unlock booking for your spouse.
This is exactly where the rent bonus becomes strategically useful beyond the cheap Avios. A single qualifying transaction on your Qatar card, and rent processed through Bilt Wallet counts, satisfies the requirement and opens up nominee booking. The Infinite card sweetens this further: its first-year Gold status exempts you from the nominee limit entirely when booking by phone.
What This Means for Your Strategy
If you're already carrying a Qatar card, add it to Bilt Wallet today and confirm at least one qualifying purchase has posted before you plan an award for someone else. If you're weighing whether to apply for a Qatar card in the first place, our Qatar Privilege Club sign-up guide covers the enrollment basics, and it's worth pairing with the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Card application page directly since first-year Gold status is doing a lot of work here. Renters who don't want a Qatar card can still get to Avios indirectly through fee-free rent earning, detailed in our complete Bilt Rewards guide, though that path won't satisfy Qatar's new nominee requirement on its own.
FAQ
Does transferring Avios from Bilt count as a qualifying transaction for nominee booking? No. Qatar's rules specifically require a flown flight credit or an eligible Qatar credit card purchase, not a points transfer.
Can I still book Qatar awards for my family through British Airways instead? Often yes. BA and Qatar share the Avios currency, and BA can price many Qatar awards without the same nominee restriction, though not every itinerary is available and BA's calendar opens five days after Qatar's.
Is the 3% Bilt fee worth it compared to just using the Bilt Mastercard? It depends on how you value flexible Bilt points versus direct Avios and whether you need the qualifying transaction for nominee access. Run both scenarios before committing $50,000 of rent to one card.
Between the earning bump and the tightened redemption rules, this is one of those weeks where doing nothing costs you real money. Get your Qatar card into Bilt Wallet, confirm your qualifying transaction, and revisit who's on your nominee list before your next award search. This article contains affiliate links.
