Philadelphia has a cruise terminal again. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and PhilaPort opened it on August 27, 2026, and Norwegian is the first line to sail from the city in more than 15 years.
Norwegian Jewel is sailing from the terminal now, through September 26, 2026. Norwegian Pearl takes over in November 2026. Norwegian Gem joins in summer 2028 with seven-day Bermuda and Atlantic Coast runs.
The deal runs seven years, through March 31, 2033.
What sails from there
Itineraries out of Philadelphia run five to 14 days. The list covers Bermuda, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Canada and New England.
That range is the whole point of a mid-Atlantic homeport. Bermuda is a short run. Canada and New England work in fall. The Caribbean takes longer from Philadelphia than from Florida, which is why the longer sailings exist.
PhilaPort projects about 2,185 direct and indirect jobs and roughly $300 million in annual economic output. Norwegian also put $50,000 into local groups, split between the Tinicum Township fire department and Boys and Girls Clubs.
"PhilaPort's new cruise terminal is a critical component of our broader economic development strategy, creating good jobs and generating new economic activity," said Rich Lazer, executive director and chief executive of PhilaPort.
Why a drive-to port changes the math
Here is the part that actually matters to a reader in the Northeast.
Cruise fares look cheap until you add flights. A family of four flying to Miami for a seven-day sailing can spend more getting to the ship than the ship costs per person. Drive-to ports delete that line item.
Philadelphia sits within a three-hour drive of a large chunk of the Northeast Corridor. For anyone in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware or northern Maryland, this is now closer than Bayonne or Baltimore.
It also removes the day you lose to flying, and the risk that a delay makes you miss the ship. Cruise lines do not wait, and travel insurance pays out slowly.
Where points fit, and where they do not
They mostly do not, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
Norwegian is not a transfer partner for Chase, Amex, Capital One or Citi. There is no fixed-value route from a points balance into a Norwegian fare. Card travel portals will book cruises at about one cent per point, which is a poor rate for a large purchase.
The better use of points around a cruise is everything except the cruise. A pre-cruise hotel night near the terminal is a strong points redemption, especially if you are driving in the night before. So is the return.
If you want the fuller picture on where points help with cruises, we walked through it in our guide to booking Caribbean cruises with points.
Who this is not for
Anyone chasing the newest hardware. Jewel entered service in 2005 and Pearl in 2006. Both have been refurbished, but they are older ships with smaller cabins and fewer venues than the Prima class.
If the ship itself is the vacation, fly to a Florida port and sail something newer. If the destination is the vacation and you would rather not spend a day in an airport, Philadelphia is the better trade.
The seven-day Bermuda run is the one I would look at first. Bermuda is a genuinely good cruise destination from the mid-Atlantic, the crossing is short, and ships dock at King's Wharf rather than tendering.
The thing to watch is whether a second line follows. One line at a terminal is a trial. Two is a market, and that is when fares start competing.
