Unless you were already planning to close it, keep it. If you hold a Discover card and you're sorting out what Discover moving to Capital One means for you, Capital One's own pages say the card stays a Discover card, you keep your account number and card, and there's still no annual fee. No application is needed, and Capital One says it will reach out when it's your turn.
What changes is where you manage the account and how you redeem rewards, and those are the details worth checking before you close anything. Here's what Capital One says stays put, what changes, and what to look at first if you still want out.
What Stays the Same
Capital One's pages say it plainly: "You'll keep your Discover credit card and rewards. The Discover brand and network are not going away." Primary cardholders don't get a new card, and places where you've stored your current 16-digit card number online will keep working.
Your rewards balance and earn rate stay the same, and Capital One says your rewards won't expire for the life of your card account. There's still no annual fee, and you keep your current APR and credit limit.
If you carry Discover it Cash Back or Discover More, the 5% rotating program continues. You still activate each quarter to earn 5% on eligible categories, on purchases up to $1,500, and an activation you've already made moves with your account. Our Q4 2026 5% categories guide covers the October to December quarter.
Capital One's FAQ also addresses your credit file. It says the change won't be reported as a new account, and your account open date will appear as the same date currently reported on your credit file.
What Changes When Your Discover Card Moves to Capital One
The biggest change is where you manage the card. Once your account is ready with Capital One, you'll no longer view or manage it on Discover.com or in the Discover app, and you'll use the Capital One website and app instead. If you're already a Capital One customer, you may be able to keep your Capital One username and password. If you hold more than one Discover account, they may move at different times, so you might use both sites for a while.
Timing is staged. Capital One's July 9, 2026 page says some cardholders have already moved and others won't until later this year or 2027. It says it will contact you directly when it's your turn. Your payment due date will likely stay the same, though Capital One says it will change some due dates and notify those customers by letter or email.
Rewards redemption has the longest list of changes. Capital One's consumer card page lists these:
- Rewards can't be applied to your minimum payment. You can apply them to your balance as a statement credit through the Redeem for cash option.
- Gift cards are still available with at least 5% added value, with a new minimum redemption of $25.
- Automatic statement credit redemption is still available, but you need to re-enroll your preferences on the Capital One website.
- Pay with Rewards with Apple Pay isn't available.
The FAQ adds that in the days before your account moves, some features on the Discover site and app, including redeeming rewards and changing account details, are temporarily unavailable.
Why Keeping It Is the Easy Call
Keeping the card carries no annual fee and needs no application. Your balance, earn rate and credit limit all carry over, so you can wait until Capital One contacts you before deciding anything.
Capital One's page also lists additional ways to earn once your account moves: 5% cash back through Capital One Travel, 5% cash back through Capital One Entertainment, and up to 15% cash back through Capital One Offers. If you were going to close the card over a lack of earning options, that's worth a look first.
What to Check Before You Close It
If you still want to close the account, three things are worth checking first, and all three are covered on Capital One's pages.
Rewards. Redeem the balance using the options above, and watch for Your Rewards Program Terms & Conditions, which Capital One says arrive by email or mail. Our guide to what happens to rewards when you close a credit card is a useful checklist for any card.
Payments and subscriptions. Capital One says scheduled and automatic payments move with your account, and it will tell you by email or letter if it can't move one. Apple Pay recurring subscriptions may need to be re-established, so look over what's billed to the card.
Authorized users. Authorized users and joint account holders get a new card with their own unique 16-digit number, mailed to the primary cardholder. Until it arrives, their current card keeps working.
One caveat: if you have a former Discover it Business card, the FAQ says its answers may not apply and lists 800-227-4825 for business account questions.
Your Next Step
Keep the card and wait for Capital One's notice that your account is ready. If you decide to close it anyway, redeem your rewards first and work through the three checks above.
