As of October 2, 2026, the Discover 5% Cashback Bonus categories for the fourth quarter are restaurants, entertainment and utilities. They earn 5% from October 1 through December 31, 2026, on up to $1,500 in purchases, and only after you activate. Discover's own calendar puts the payoff at "up to $75 cash back each quarter."
Activation matters because the 5% doesn't reach back. Discover's terms say the rate applies "from 10/1/26 (or the date on which you activate 5%, whichever is later)." If you activate on November 10, your October dinners earn the regular rate.
What Discover Announced
Discover's 5% calendar lists "Restaurants, Entertainment and Utilities" for October to December 2026. The offer is "For Discover it® and Discover® More® cardmembers only," and everything else you buy keeps earning unlimited 1% cash back.
Restaurants were also a 5% category earlier this year. Discover's calendar shows restaurants paired with home improvement stores from April to June 2026, then gas stations, transportation and drug stores from July to September.
What Counts in Each Category
The headline categories are broad. The fine print is where they get narrower, so here's Discover's wording for each.
- Restaurants: "merchants classified as full-service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias, fast-food locations, and caterers." Restaurants "located inside of or affiliated with another business, such as hotels or retail stores," and places classified as a bakery "may not qualify."
- Entertainment: "ticket purchases at movie theaters, sports promoters (professional and semi-professional live events), theatrical promoters, concert promoters, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, zoos, dance halls, record stores, video rental locations, pool halls and bowling alleys." Discover says golf courses, country clubs, "some collegiate sporting events," charitable events, "cable and digital streaming and subscription services," amusement park tickets bought on third-party sites, and packages categorized as "travel" or "hotel" "do not qualify."
- Utilities: "residential electricity, natural gas, and water service," plus "purchases made over the phone or online for internet, cable, satellite TV, and mobile and landline phone service." Paying for internet, cable, satellite or phone service at a physical retail store does not qualify. Bills paid "through a landlord, property management company, or homeowners association" may not qualify, and neither may home fuel delivery, "standalone streaming services," some satellite phone and internet service, vehicle connectivity, accessories or equipment.
Two things in there catch people. Streaming services are excluded from entertainment and flagged under utilities too, so don't count on a standalone streaming subscription earning 5% this quarter. And the utilities category rewards paying the provider online or by phone, not at a carrier's store.
How Activation Works
Discover says activating is "completely free." You can do it in the Discover mobile app, in your online account, or by calling 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683). Once you're in, 5% applies to qualifying purchases up to the $1,500 quarterly maximum, and Discover says rewards are added to your account within two billing periods.
The rest of the terms are the usual rotating-category caveats. Purchases must be made with merchants in the U.S., and the transaction date must fall on or before December 31. For online orders, Discover notes the merchant's transaction date "may be the date when the item ships."
Discover also says a purchase that looks like it fits may not have a merchant category code (MCC) in that category, and that "Discover Card does not assign MCCs to merchants." Some third-party payment accounts and digital wallet transactions "may not earn 5%" if they don't pass along enough detail or a qualifying code.
The Capital One Note
Discover says "Discover Bank recently merged into Capital One, N.A.," and that "if your card is eligible to be managed through the Capital One-branded mobile banking app or website, please login for the benefits and features that apply to your card." If you've been moved to Capital One's app, check your offer there before you count on these terms.
What You Should Do
Activate now, even if your first big restaurant or utility charge is weeks away, since nothing before activation earns 5%. Then point your biggest utility bills at the Discover card, paid directly to the provider, and use it for dining out.
If you also carry another rotating-category card, compare before you decide where dinner goes: we've covered the Chase Freedom Q4 2026 categories and the Citi Dividend Q4 2026 categories. Discover's offer ends December 31, 2026.
