Citi has published its fourth-quarter Dividend bonus categories: 5% cash back at the Citi Travel site on hotels, car rentals and attractions, plus 5% at restaurants. Sign-up opened September 10, 2026, and the offer period starts within two business days of enrollment or on October 1, whichever is later, and runs through December 31, 2026, according to Citi's quarterly offer page.

That's the quarter every rotating-category card holder cares about, because it covers holiday travel and holiday dining at the same time. It's also the quarter where the Dividend's ceiling bites hardest, since the $300 annual cap counts everything you've already earned this calendar year.

What Citi actually announced

The mechanics are worth reading closely, because the headline number isn't the whole story.

The travel side is narrower than "travel" suggests. Eligible transactions are hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi Travel at Cititravel.com or by phone at 1-833-737-1288. Air travel is excluded outright. Citi Travel is powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda, so this is a portal booking, not a direct booking with the hotel.

The restaurant category is broad at the top and narrow at the edges. Citi says it includes "purchases at cafes, bars, lounges and fast-food restaurants." It excludes bakeries, caterers, third-party dining delivery services, and restaurants located inside another business, which Citi spells out as hotels, stores, stadiums, grocery stores and warehouse clubs.

Then there's the cap. In Citi's words: "Your total annual cash back is limited to $300 and includes cash back earned with this offer." That's a calendar-year ceiling on the whole card, not a quarterly allowance that resets in October.

Why the exclusions matter more than usual

A hotel restaurant doesn't count. Neither does a bar inside a stadium, or the cafe at the front of a grocery store. If you're traveling in December and eating where you're sleeping, a large share of your dining spend falls outside the category.

Citi's terms explain why this happens. Merchants get assigned a merchant category code by the network, and Citi groups those codes into reward categories. As the terms put it, "we don't control the assignment of these codes and are not responsible for the codes used by merchants."

That's the rule behind almost every "why didn't this purchase earn 5%" complaint. The category is the code, not the sign above the door. Citi also flags that purchases made through mobile or wireless technology may not earn the bonus, depending on how the merchant's payment setup processes them.

On the travel side, the exclusion of air travel means the portal is only useful to you this quarter if you're booking a hotel, a rental car or a tour or ticket. If you were planning to run flight spend through it for the bonus, that plan doesn't work. If you book a rental car there, our car rental guide covers which card's rental coverage applies and what you have to do to keep it, starting with paying for the whole rental with that card.

Where this sits against the rest of your wallet

The practical comparison is against whatever else in your wallet earns on the same spend.

This quarter the two overlap on dining. Grocery stores belong to the Freedom alone. Our rundown of rotating category cards walks through how the major programs differ on caps, enrollment windows and category breadth.

The $300 annual cap is the number that decides how much attention this deserves. If you've already earned most of it earlier in 2026, the Q4 categories are worth very little to you, and your restaurant spend belongs on a flat-rate dining card instead. If you're starting the quarter with room left under the cap, 5% on holiday dining is worth routing to this card.

One more wrinkle: Citi says the account must be open and current at all times to qualify, and that closing the card or converting it to another product ends your eligibility. If you've been considering a product change on a Dividend, the fourth quarter is the wrong time to do it.

What to do before October 1

Enroll. The offer starts within two business days of when you enroll, or October 1, 2026, whichever is later, which means enrolling late in the quarter costs you the days before you signed up.

Then check your year-to-date cash back against the $300 cap so you know what the quarter is actually worth to you. If you're near the ceiling, route dining elsewhere and skip the mental overhead.

If you're booking holiday travel through Citi Travel, book hotels, cars and attractions there and leave flights to whichever card earns best on airfare. Purchases have to post to your account during the promotional period, so a late-December booking that settles in January won't count. For the broader question of which card to reach for on any given purchase, our guide to choosing a travel card by how you spend is the place to start.

Citi's offer page lists only the October through December categories right now, so that's the page to check for the first quarter of 2027.
