As of October 2, 2026, Delta lets SkyMiles members check one case of wine free when flying out of five California airports: Oakland (OAK), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC), Sacramento (SMF) and Sonoma County (STS). Delta calls it SkyMiles Wine Takes Flight, and its page lists the benefit as currently available on eligible flights to destinations across the U.S.
The pitch is aimed at visitors to Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Livermore Valley and other wine regions who would otherwise ship their bottles home.
Who Qualifies
According to Delta's terms, you need to be an active SkyMiles member and at least 21 years old, on a paid ticket or an award ticket. The flight has to be marketed and operated by Delta or Delta Connection, start at one of the five airports and go to a destination in the 50 U.S. states. Codeshare and non-participating itineraries don't qualify, and any existing baggage embargoes still apply.
It works in one direction only. Checking a wine case on a flight to these airports costs the usual bag fee.
What Counts As a Case
Delta defines a case as a single box or wine travel container with up to 12 bottles of 750 ml, weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and within the standard 62-linear-inch bag size limit. The rules for packing it:
- Bottles must be unopened, with their original labels.
- The container has to be durable and leak-resistant, with enough protective material inside. Delta may refuse a case that isn't properly packed.
- You present the case at the ticket counter, where it may be inspected, so don't seal it if an agent asks to look first.
The benefit waives the standard checked bag fee for one qualifying case. Extra, overweight or oversized bag charges still apply. Delta also says wine and other fragile items travel at your own risk, and it can change or end the program at any time without notice.
Separately, Delta announced a new Delta One wine list on September 16, with wines pouring onboard from October 1, 2026.
How to Use It
Buy your wine, pack it in an approved wine shipping box or travel container, and bring it to the Delta ticket counter at departure. You collect it at baggage claim at your destination.
For the rest of your luggage, if you hold a Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum or Reserve Amex, our guide to the Delta Amex second free checked bag covers the free bags those cards add, and our checked bag fee guide covers the other airlines.
If your trip home starts at OAK, SFO, SJC, SMF or STS on a Delta flight, you can skip shipping one case. Flying wine in the other direction costs the usual bag fee, and codeshare flights aren't covered.
