The Citi / AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard offers 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles after $5,000 in purchases in the first 5 months, with the annual fee waived for the first 12 months. The fee is $99 today, and Citi's announcement says it rises to $150 on January 24, 2027, the same day new benefits start. This review covers what the card earns today, what changes in January and who it suits.
Quick Summary
The card earns 2X miles on American Airlines purchases, car rental merchants, gas stations and telecommunications, cable and satellite providers, and 1X on everything else. Every cardmember earns Loyalty Points toward AAdvantage status. It suits a business that flies American and can put $5,000 on the card in five months.
The Welcome Offer
American's card page lists 75,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after you or your employees spend $5,000 in purchases within the first 5 months of account opening, and labels it a limited-time offer. The bonus isn't available if you received a new account bonus on this card or on the CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select in the past 48 months. The page says the offer is for people who live in the United States and its territories, excluding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our deal alert on the 75,000-mile offer tracks it, and it's worth confirming that the application page shows 75,000 miles before you apply.
What the Card Earns
You earn 2 AAdvantage miles per $1 on eligible American Airlines purchases, at car rental merchants, at gas stations, and at telecommunications merchants and cable and satellite providers. Everything else earns 1 mile per $1.
Each cardmember, employees included, earns 1 Loyalty Point per $1 spent on their business card. Citi's announcement adds that the primary cardmember earns 1 extra Loyalty Point per $1 from authorized users' eligible purchases through December 31, 2028. Our guide to how employee cards earn their own Loyalty Points explains how that works.
Travel Benefits Today
The first checked bag is free on domestic American itineraries for you and up to four companions on the same reservation. You also get preferred boarding, 25% savings on inflight Wi-Fi, food and beverage purchases on American flights when you use the card, and 10% savings on eligible American Airlines Vacations packages. There are no foreign transaction fees.
The Companion Certificate comes after $30,000 or more in purchases in a cardmembership year and renewal. It's for a qualifying single round-trip domestic Main Cabin flight, and redeeming it costs $99 for the ticketing fee plus taxes and fees.
What Changes on January 24, 2027
Citi says existing cardmembers get new and enhanced benefits starting January 24, 2027, when the annual fee becomes $150. Citi's release lists:
- 3X AAdvantage miles on eligible bookings at aadvantagehotels.com and aadvantagecars.com
- 2X miles on one category you choose: U.S. shipping providers, office supply stores or U.S. advertising services
- Up to a $120 credit every four years for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee
- Up to $100 a year in statement credits on inflight purchases
- 25% off a Melio subscription plan
- Enhanced trip cancellation and trip interruption protection, lost or damaged luggage coverage, MasterRental car rental coverage and trip delay coverage
Our report on the fee increase has the details for both cards.
The Fee and the APR
American's page lists the annual fee as $99, waived for the first 12 months of account opening. Citi's announcement says it becomes $150 on January 24, 2027. If you open the card now, your first fee comes after the free year, so the $150 figure is the one to plan around. The purchase APR is a variable 19.74% to 28.74%, based on your creditworthiness.
Strengths and Trade-Offs
The strengths are the 75,000-mile offer, the free first checked bag for you and up to four companions, and Loyalty Points for every cardmember. The trade-offs are that 2X applies only in the listed categories, the Companion Certificate needs $30,000 in a cardmembership year, and the fee goes from $99 to $150 on January 24, 2027.
Who Should Get This Card
It suits a small business that flies American, with employees whose spending can earn Loyalty Points and travelers who check a bag on domestic trips. If your business spending is mostly outside the 2X categories, the new self-selected category from January may fit your spending, and Citi's release lists the options. If you rarely fly American, the benefits that justify the fee won't get much use.
Final Verdict
The Citi / AAdvantage Business card makes sense for a business that already flies American and can reach $5,000 in five months. The first year is fee-free, and the January 24, 2027 changes add hotel and car earning, a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit and inflight credits. Plan on the $150 fee from the second year, and check the application page for the 75,000-mile offer before you apply.
