Cathay does sell a US credit card, the Cathay World Elite Mastercard, issued by Synchrony with a $99 annual fee. It earns 3 Asia Miles per dollar on Cathay Pacific and HK Express travel, 2 on dining and 1 on everything else. But you don't need it to build an Asia Miles balance. Transferable points do the job, and they don't lock you into one airline. As of October 2026, Bilt and Capital One transfer to Asia Miles at 1:1, Citi transfers at 1:1 from the Strata Premier, and Amex transfers 1,000 points to 800 Asia Miles.
This guide walks through the cards I'd actually use to build Asia Miles from a standing start, the transfer flow for each, and what to check before you book.
Why Asia Miles Is Worth Your Attention Even Without Flying Cathay
Asia Miles isn't the loudest program in points-and-miles circles, but it sits on the Oneworld alliance and that's the point. Cathay lists American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Malaysia Airlines, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines among the partners you can search and book instantly online. Japan Airlines is a partner too, but as of October 9, 2026, Asia Miles has suspended Japan Airlines award bookings until further notice. For other airline partners, Cathay says to contact Customer Care.
Cathay's own award chart page publishes upgrade awards by distance zone. For standard and partner flight awards, it sends you to the Redeem flight awards search to see how many miles a trip needs, so price your route there before you move any points.
The Four US Programs That Transfer to Asia Miles
Four major flexible-points programs transfer to Asia Miles. Here's what each one's own transfer page says:
- Citi ThankYou Points: 1,000 points to 1,000 Asia Miles for Strata Premier, Strata Elite and Prestige cardmembers; 1,000 to 700 for Double Cash, Custom Cash, Strata and ThankYou Preferred cardmembers
- American Express Membership Rewards: 1,000 points to 800 Asia Miles, with an estimated transfer time of 48 hours
- Capital One miles: 1:1
- Bilt Points: 1:1, usually immediate, up to 48 hours
Marriott Bonvoy also transfers, but at 3:1. I'll cover Marriott separately because the math is different.
The 1:1 ratio is the headline. Say you earn a 60,000-point welcome bonus on a card that transfers at 1:1: that's 60,000 Asia Miles. That's what you don't get from Marriott.
Citi Strata Premier: The Headline Card for Asia Miles
If you can only get one card for Asia Miles, get the Citi Strata Premier. It earns 10x ThankYou Points on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked on cititravel.com; 3x on air travel and other hotel purchases, restaurants, supermarkets, and gas and EV charging stations; and 1x everywhere else. The annual fee is $95, and Citi's current offer is 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months.
Why it's the headline:
- 3x covers the categories most points collectors actually spend in
- It's one of the Citi cards that transfers to Asia Miles at 1,000 points to 1,000 miles
- It pairs with the no-annual-fee Citi Double Cash, which earns 1 ThankYou Point per dollar when you buy and 1 more per dollar when you pay
Citi lets you combine multiple ThankYou accounts into one. The Double Cash transfers at 1,000 to 700 on its own, so check the rate on the transfer screen before you move points that came from it.
How to transfer Citi ThankYou Points to Asia Miles: sign in at thankyou.com, open Points Transfer and choose Cathay Pacific. The minimum is 1,000 ThankYou Points, in 1,000-point increments, and the name on your Asia Miles account has to match your ThankYou account. Citi says some partners post within 24 hours and others take up to 14 days, and a transfer can't be reversed once it's submitted.
American Express Membership Rewards: Deep Card Lineup, Broad Earning
Amex Membership Rewards transfers to Asia Miles at 1,000 points to 800 Asia Miles. The strongest Amex earners for Asia Miles are:
- Amex Platinum: 5x on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 a calendar year) and 5x on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel, $895 annual fee, with a welcome offer as high as 175,000 points after you spend $12,000 in purchases within the first 6 months (offers vary)
- Amex Gold: 4x at restaurants worldwide on up to $50,000 a year, 4x at US supermarkets on up to $25,000 a year, 3x on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, $325 annual fee, with a welcome offer as high as 100,000 points after you spend $8,000 within the first 6 months (offers vary)
- Amex Business Gold: 4x on your top two eligible categories each month, on the first $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year, $375 annual fee
- Blue Business Plus: 2x on the first $50,000 of eligible purchases each calendar year, then 1x, no annual fee
The Blue Business Plus deserves special mention. It's a 2x card with no annual fee, and Amex says its points transfer to the airline and hotel partners. If you already hold an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards, it's the no-fee earner to pair with it.
How to transfer Amex Membership Rewards to Asia Miles: sign in, go to the Membership Rewards transfer page, select Cathay Pacific and connect your Asia Miles account. The minimum transfer is 1,000 points, in 1,000-point increments, and Amex estimates 48 hours for the miles to arrive.
Capital One Miles: The Steady Earner
Capital One miles transfer to Asia Miles at 1:1. The card lineup leans flat-rate:
- Venture X Rewards: 2x miles on all purchases, 10x on hotels and rental cars and 5x on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel, $395 annual fee, with a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and a 10,000-mile anniversary bonus
- Venture Rewards: 2x on all purchases, 5x on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, $95 annual fee
- VentureOne: 1.25x on all purchases, no annual fee
Capital One's pitch is simplicity. If you spend heavily in categories that other cards don't reward at 3x or 4x, the Venture X's 2x on everything fills the gap, and the $300 travel credit offsets part of the $395 fee if you book through Capital One Travel anyway.
How to transfer Capital One miles to Asia Miles: sign in online or in the Capital One Mobile app, go to the rewards section and choose to transfer your miles to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. You need at least 1,000 miles, the name on your Capital One account has to match your Asia Miles account, and a finished transfer can't be moved back.
Bilt Cards: The Rent-Paying Earner
Bilt now has three cards, and all three earn points on rent and mortgage payments with no transaction fee:
- Bilt Blue: no annual fee, $100 of Bilt Cash as a sign-up bonus
- Bilt Obsidian: $95 annual fee, 3x on your choice of dining or grocery (grocery up to $25,000 a year), $200 of Bilt Cash as a sign-up bonus
- Bilt Palladium: $495 annual fee, 2x on everyday purchases, and a sign-up bonus of 50,000 points plus Gold status after you spend $4,000 on purchases (excluding rent or mortgage) in your first 90 days, plus $300 of Bilt Cash
Housing earning is tied to your everyday spending. Each billing cycle, Bilt pays 0.5x to 1.25x on your rent or mortgage depending on how much you spend on the card relative to the payment, with 1.25x when your everyday spend matches 100% or more of it. Below 25%, you earn 250 points.
How to transfer Bilt Points to Asia Miles: in the Bilt app or on the website, go to the Rewards tab, then Travel rewards, then Transfer, and pick Cathay Pacific. The minimum is 2,000 points at Blue status and 1,000 points at Silver, Gold or Platinum, in 1,000-point increments. Bilt says most transfers are immediate but to allow up to 48 hours.
Marriott Bonvoy: The Ratio That Almost Never Pays
Marriott Bonvoy transfers to Asia Miles at 3:1, and Marriott adds 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points you transfer. Say you move 60,000 Bonvoy points: that's 20,000 Asia Miles plus the 5,000-mile bonus, or 25,000 in all.
Here's why I almost never recommend this transfer: you give up a lot of hotel points for a modest pile of miles. There's exactly one situation where it makes sense: you're a few thousand miles short of an Asia Miles redemption you've already found, and you have Marriott points sitting idle. Otherwise, leave the Marriott points for hotel stays.
The Combinations I'd Actually Run in 2026
A few combinations worth running depending on your situation:
The minimal Asia Miles strategy: Citi Strata Premier plus Citi Double Cash. The Premier earns 3x on restaurants, supermarkets, gas and EV charging, air travel and other hotel purchases for $95 a year. The Double Cash earns 2x on everything else for no annual fee. Transfer from the Premier when you've found award space, and check the rate shown for any Double Cash points before you confirm. This combination has no Amex or Capital One overlap.
The Amex-anchored strategy: Amex Gold plus Amex Blue Business Plus. The Gold earns 4x at restaurants (up to $50,000 a year) and 4x at US supermarkets (up to $25,000 a year). The Blue Business Plus covers everything else at 2x on the first $50,000 a year with no annual fee. You're paying $325 in annual fees, with Membership Rewards' full list of airline and hotel transfer partners, including Asia Miles.
The high-spend strategy: Amex Platinum, Amex Blue Business Plus and Capital One Venture X. The Platinum's 5x on flights booked directly pairs with the Venture X's 10x on hotels booked through Capital One Travel, and the Blue Business Plus is the 2x backup. You're paying $895 a year for the Platinum and $395 for the Venture X, and the Venture X's $300 travel credit offsets part of its own fee. Two transferable currencies, both with a path to Asia Miles, is the diversified position.
If you pay rent or a mortgage, I'd add a Bilt card. The Bilt Blue has no annual fee, and it earns on a payment that most cards don't reward at all.
The Asia Miles Redemptions Worth Chasing
Cathay Pacific business class from North America to Hong Kong is the classic target, and intra-Asia business class is the underrated one if you're already in the region or doing a multi-stop trip. Price both in Cathay's Redeem flight awards search before you transfer, because that search is where Cathay shows the miles a standard or partner award needs.
Atmos Rewards, the Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines program, is another way onto Cathay. Alaska says you can book Cathay Pacific award travel with Atmos Rewards points through Alaska or Hawaiian, and Bilt and Marriott both transfer to Atmos Rewards. If you hold Bilt Points, compare the Atmos price with the Asia Miles price for the same seat before you transfer.
What to Watch for: Surcharges, Seat Search, and Expiration
Cathay says the Asia Miles required for an award don't include fuel surcharges and taxes, so expect to pay cash on top of the miles. Check the total at checkout before you transfer anything.
For the partners on Cathay's instant list, you can search and book on the Redeem flight awards page. For any other airline partner, Cathay says to contact Customer Care or send a Flight Award Request Form online.
Asia Miles stay active as long as you earn or use miles at least once every 18 months. Each time miles credit or debit, Cathay extends the expiry date 18 months from that date. The cheap way to keep miles alive is to transfer 1,000 ThankYou Points or Membership Rewards points before the 18 months run out. Don't lose a big balance because nobody mentioned this.
If family members will fly on your miles, set up your Redemption Group. Cathay lets each member add or change up to five nominees per membership year, the first five registrations in your membership lifetime are free, and changing a nominee after that costs USD50 online or USD75 through other channels.
Where I'd Start
If you're starting with zero Asia Miles and want to get to a Cathay business class redemption to Asia, a simple path is the Citi Strata Premier welcome bonus plus a few months of category spending. Say you earn the 60,000-point bonus and put $1,500 a month on 3x categories for three months: that's another 13,500 points, or 73,500 ThankYou Points, which the Premier transfers at 1,000 to 1,000. Check the award price in Cathay's search before you move them.
If you already have a solid Amex Membership Rewards balance (say, from a past Platinum or Gold welcome offer), you don't need a new card. Transfer to Asia Miles when you find award space, remembering that 1,000 Amex points become 800 Asia Miles, and add a Bilt card if you pay rent.
If you hold a Capital One Venture X, you're already set. Capital One transfers 1:1 to Asia Miles, and the Venture X earns 2x on everything.
You don't need a Cathay co-branded card to fly Cathay business class. You need enough transferable points to cover the award and the patience to wait for award space, and transferable points keep you flexible if your plans change.
