American Airlines Basic Economy covers the cheapest seats you can access with American Airlines. And these bargain seats can be a great way to save money when traveling for business or leisure. - You will not be able to choose your seat. This will be automatically assigned to you when you check in, (unless you are willing to pay an extra fee.)
- You have 24 hours from purchase to change or cancel for a refund if you booked at least 7 days before departure. After that, changes and refunds to your original form of payment aren't allowed, though AAdvantage members may be able to cancel an eligible trip booked directly with American for travel credit, for a fee. (If your trip starts in Europe, except Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, you can change it for a fee.)
- You will board last, typically in Group 9.
- AAdvantage members can stand by for another flight on the same day at no charge.
- You will be allowed 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item.
- Basic Economy fares don't include free checked bags. (AAdvantage status members are exempt, eligible Citi AAdvantage cardmembers are exempt on flights within the U.S. and Canada marketed and operated by American, and Basic Economy includes 1 free checked bag to and from Australia and New Zealand, and to and from Asia, India and Qatar on tickets issued on or after April 23, 2026.)
If you want certain seats for your comfort or want guaranteed group seating for children under 15, then booking a basic economy flight may be an issue (although there are some workarounds!)
Your Points Earning Potential
American says Basic Economy tickets bought on or after December 17, 2025 won't earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points, the currency that counts toward AAdvantage status.

Is the American Airlines Economy Basic Price Worth It?

AAdvantage Elite Membership
If you book your flight while logged into your AAdvantage Elite membership you keep several of your status benefits on Basic Economy, though American says some aren't available on Basic Economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026. Elite status members will be able to use the following benefits to elevate their economy experience:
- Use your upgrade privileges to move to a more expensive seat than the one you booked.
- Choose a complimentary Preferred or Main Cabin Extra seat based on your status, but only on a Basic Economy ticket bought before May 18, 2026.
- Improve your boarding group as an AA Elite member.
- Make complimentary confirmed same-day flight changes if you're Executive Platinum or Platinum Pro.
- Access free checked bags for your flight.
Your boarding group and free checked bags depend on your status tier:
- AAdvantage Gold: Group 4 boarding and first checked bag free.
- AAdvantage Platinum: Group 3 boarding and first 2 checked bags free.
- AAdvantage Platinum Pro: Group 2 boarding and first 3 checked bags free.
- AAdvantage Executive Platinum: Group 1 boarding and first 3 checked bags free.
Oneworld Elite Membership
If you have oneworld elite status through another airline's program, oneworld says Emerald and Sapphire members can check an extra bag free on oneworld airlines, and it lists priority boarding among its tier benefits, in line with each operating airline's policy. American's Basic Economy page lists AAdvantage status members and eligible AAdvantage cardmembers as the ones exempt from its no-free-checked-bag rule, so confirm with American before counting on a free bag.
