Book by 11:59 p.m. Central on Wednesday, September 30, 2026: American Airlines will confirm a systemwide upgrade from Premium Economy to business class on eligible holiday flights, as long as business class seats are still for sale. You don't need the usual upgrade space.

Normally a systemwide upgrade confirms only when American releases upgrade space, and otherwise sits on the waitlist. Under this promotion, American confirms it as long as the business class cabin still has seats for sale.

Which flights qualify

  • International: flights marketed and operated by American between the U.S. and Europe, South America and Asia, where Premium Economy is sold
  • Transcontinental: select transcontinental routes where Premium Economy is sold
  • Excluded: flights to and from Hawaii, Auckland, Brisbane, Delhi, Sydney and Tel Aviv
  • Also excluded: award tickets, and domestic connecting flights that are part of the trip

How to take advantage

  1. Buy a Premium Economy ticket on an eligible flight departing in one of the two holiday windows.
  2. Request a systemwide upgrade on aa.com, in the American app or by calling Reservations, before 11:59 p.m. Central on September 30.
  3. Wait a few hours for the confirmation.

If American can't confirm the upgrade, you can request a refund to your original form of payment by contacting Reservations by 11:59 p.m. Central on October 6, 2026.

Why this deal matters

This promotion takes the guesswork out of a systemwide upgrade: if business class is for sale, the upgrade clears. It's worth acting on if you hold systemwide upgrades, have a trip in one of the holiday windows on an eligible route, and the Premium Economy fare is one you'd pay anyway.

The catch is the price of the ticket. You have to buy Premium Economy rather than upgrade from Main Cabin, and domestic connections aren't covered by the promotion. Price the Premium Economy fare first, then decide. The window closes Wednesday night.
