Share:

When it comes to choosing a hotel rewards program, two of the biggest names in the industry are Marriott and IHG. Both offer a wide range of benefits and perks for loyal guests, but which one comes out on top? Let's take a closer look at each program to see which one offers the best rewards.

Marriott Bonvoy:

Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty program offered by Marriott International, which includes over 7,000 hotels and 30 brands worldwide. With Marriott Bonvoy, members can earn points for every dollar spent on eligible stays, as well as for dining, spa treatments, and other activities. These points can then be redeemed for free nights, room upgrades, airline miles, and more.

One of the standout features of Marriott Bonvoy is its extensive hotel portfolio. With properties in every major city and popular tourist destination, members have plenty of options when it comes to redeeming their points. Marriott also offers multiple elite status tiers, each catering to different preferences and needs. These tiers, including Platinum Elite, Silver Elite, and Gold Elite, grant exclusive privileges such as complimentary breakfast, late checkout, and room upgrades, enhancing the overall experience for loyal members.

Marriott Bonvoy American Express Cards:

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card: This premium card offered benefits like an annual free night award, automatic Gold Elite status, and statement credits for eligible purchases at Marriott Bonvoy properties.

Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card: This business card provided rewards and benefits tailored for business travelers, including an annual free night certificate and Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card: This consumer card offered an annual free night certificate, Silver Elite status, and the opportunity to earn additional elite night credits through card spending.

Marriott Bonvoy Chase Cards:

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card: This was a consumer card that provided similar benefits to the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card from American Express.

Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Credit Card: This business card was designed for small business owners and offered rewards and benefits related to Marriott stays.

Marriott Bonvoy Bold™ Credit Card: This was a no-annual-fee consumer card that allowed cardholders to earn Marriott Bonvoy points on purchases, making it accessible for those who wanted Marriott rewards without an annual fee.

IHG Rewards Club:

IHG Rewards Club Elite status levels such as Gold status, Silver status, and, Platinum status are integral aspects of the IHG Rewards Club loyalty program. IHG Rewards Club is the loyalty program offered by InterContinental Hotels Group, which includes well-known brands such as InterContinental, Holiday Inn, and Crowne Plaza. Similar to Marriott Bonvoy, members can earn points for their stays and other qualifying activities. These points can then be used for free nights, merchandise, and even experiences.

One of the standout features of IHG Rewards Club is its PointBreaks program, which offers heavily discounted redemption rates at select hotels. This allows members to stretch their points further and enjoy luxury stays at a fraction of the cost. IHG also offers elite status tiers with benefits like priority check-in, complimentary room upgrades, and guaranteed room availability.

Here Are Some of the IHG Co-Branded Credit Cards:

IHG Rewards Club Credit Card: This was a basic credit card that allowed cardholders to earn IHG Rewards Club points on their everyday purchases. It could also offer perks like bonus points for IHG stays, an anniversary free night certificate, and automatic IHG Rewards Club Platinum Elite status.

IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card: This is a premium credit card that offers enhanced benefits for frequent IHG guests. Cardholders can earn IHG Rewards Club points on their spending and enjoy perks such as a substantial annual free night certificate, automatic Gold Elite status for new applicants, and travel-related benefits like Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application fee credits.

IHG Rewards Club Traveler Credit Card (now the IHG One Rewards Credit Card): This card is designed for travelers who prefer a no-annual-fee option. It allows cardholders to earn IHG Rewards Club points on their purchases and may offer benefits like a welcome bonus, automatic Silver Elite status, and, starting in 2027, a fourth Reward Night free on a consecutive four-night points stay once you spend $5,000 on purchases in a calendar year.

The Verdict:

Both Marriott Bonvoy and IHG Rewards Club offer attractive rewards programs with their own unique features. Ultimately, the best program for you will depend on your travel preferences and needs.

If you value a wide range of hotel options and elite status benefits, Marriott Bonvoy may be the better choice. With its extensive portfolio and numerous brands, you'll have plenty of opportunities to earn and redeem points. The ability to earn points through various activities like dining and spa treatments is a major bonus.

On the other hand, if you're looking for great value and discounted redemption rates, IHG Rewards Club's PointBreaks program may be more appealing. This program allows you to get more bang for your buck and enjoy luxury stays at a lower cost. If you frequently travel to destinations with participating hotels, this could be a major advantage.

Both Marriott Bonvoy and IHG Rewards Club offer excellent rewards programs with their own set of benefits. Consider your travel preferences, hotel options, and desired perks to determine which program aligns best with your needs. Whichever one you choose, you're sure to enjoy a rewarding experience during your hotel stay.

Updated October 2, 2026: Chase and IHG updated the IHG cards on October 1, 2026. For new applicants, the Premier card now comes with automatic Gold Elite status (was Platinum), and the no-annual-fee Traveler card is now the IHG One Rewards Credit Card. We also replaced the annual free night certificate listed for the Traveler with its current free-night benefit, which needs $5,000 in calendar-year purchases. Chase's IHG card lineup is now the Premier Select, the Premier, the IHG One Rewards Credit Card and the IHG One Rewards Business Credit Card, so we put the description of the basic IHG Rewards Club Credit Card in the past tense. Chase and IHG say: "Existing IHG One Rewards Credit Cardmembers will be notified in October with details about the new and enhanced benefits available to them and the effective date for each update. Annual Fees will be adjusted in 2027."
