Key Points

  • Hilton Honors runs Silver at 10 nights, Gold at 25, Diamond at 50 and Diamond Reserve at 80 nights plus $18,000 in spend, and Gold adds a daily food and beverage credit or continental breakfast.
  • IHG's fourth reward night free comes from its Chase cards: the Premier card has it now, and the no-fee IHG One Rewards Credit Card adds it in 2027 after $5,000 in calendar-year spend.
  • Marriott Platinum, at 50 nights or with the Brilliant card, is the tier that brings lounge access and upgrades that include select suites.

Introduction

IHG vs Hilton comes down to what you want from status. Hilton Honors Gold takes 25 nights (or the Surpass card) and adds a daily food and beverage credit or continental breakfast. IHG One Rewards suits budget stays and four-night awards through its Premier card. Marriott Bonvoy spans the most brands.

Brand names cause a lot of the confusion. Hampton Inn, DoubleTree and Embassy Suites are Hilton. Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Kimpton are IHG. Courtyard, Westin and Sheraton are Marriott. So the first question isn't which program has the best chart. It's which of these three owns the hotels you already book.

This guide compares the three on footprint, elite tiers, award stays, co-branded cards and transfer partners, then matches each one to the traveler it fits.

IHG vs Hilton vs Marriott: The Quick Answer

Pick Hilton Honors if you want meaningful mid-tier status fast: Gold comes at 25 nights or with the Surpass card, and it adds an 80% points bonus, space-available upgrades and the food and beverage credit or breakfast. Pick IHG One Rewards if you stay at Holiday Inn-type hotels and book multi-night awards, since the Premier card gives you the fourth reward night free on a four-night stay. Pick Marriott Bonvoy if you travel to a wide mix of cities and want lounge access and suite upgrades at Platinum.

Pull a year of stays, see which chain had a hotel where you actually slept, and let that decide.

Footprint and Brand Mix

The three chains aren't the same size, and they lean different ways on the price ladder.

Marriott Bonvoy says you can redeem at over 30 hotel brands and 10,000 global destinations. The luxury bench includes Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and JW Marriott, the full-service tier includes Westin and Sheraton, and Courtyard, Fairfield and Residence Inn cover select-service and longer stays.

Hilton Honors covers 28 brands and more than 9,400 properties in 144 countries and territories, by Hilton's count. Waldorf Astoria and Conrad anchor luxury. The real strength is mid-scale and select-service: Hampton, Hilton Garden Inn, DoubleTree, Embassy Suites and Home2 Suites.

IHG One Rewards lists 7,000-plus destinations across 21 brands. The mix tilts toward Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn, Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites, with InterContinental, Regent, Six Senses and Kimpton at the top.

Run those names against your own city list before you read another perk chart. Network size matters less than whether the chain has a hotel in the neighborhood you want.

Elite Tiers and Where They Earn Their Keep

All three programs count nights for status. The thresholds and what you get at each level are where they differ.

Hilton Honors runs Silver (10 nights), Gold (25 nights), Diamond (50 nights) and Diamond Reserve (80 nights and $18,000 in spend). Gold is the standout: an 80% points bonus on stays, space-available room upgrades, and a daily food and beverage credit or continental breakfast, which varies by brand and region.

Diamond adds a 100% points bonus, executive lounge access, a 48-hour room guarantee and status gifting. Diamond Reserve adds a 120% bonus, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, a Confirmable Upgrade Reward and premium club access. Silver and up also get the fifth night free on reward stays.

Marriott Bonvoy runs Silver (10 nights), Gold (25 nights), Platinum (50 nights), Titanium (75 nights) and Ambassador (100 nights plus $23,000 in spend). Gold gets enhanced room upgrades and 2 p.m. late checkout based on availability.

Platinum is the tier that changes a stay: upgrades that include select suites, lounge access with breakfast at brands that have lounges, a welcome gift of points, breakfast or an amenity, 4 p.m. late checkout and an Annual Choice Benefit. Titanium adds a 48-hour guarantee and United Premier Silver, and Ambassador adds Your24 and a dedicated ambassador.

IHG One Rewards runs Silver (10 nights), Gold (20 nights or 40,000 points), Platinum (40 nights or 60,000 points) and Diamond (70 nights or 120,000 points). Bonuses run 20%, 40%, 60% and 100%.

Upgrades, early check-in and reward night discounts start at Platinum, and Diamond's welcome amenity includes free breakfast as an option. IHG also hands out Milestone Rewards every 10 nights from 20 nights a year, including confirmable suite upgrades and food and beverage rewards.

The clean ranking: Hilton Gold is the easiest status that changes what you pay at the hotel. Marriott Platinum is where lounges and suites come in. IHG elite is solid at the right brands, and its best perk for award stays comes from a credit card rather than a tier.

Award Stays and Redemption Perks

Each program has its own way of making a longer award stay cheaper.

Marriott Bonvoy runs Stay 5, Pay 4: redeem five consecutive nights and one is complimentary. You can also move points to most airline partners at 3:1, with 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points at most of them (10,000 at United).

Hilton Honors gives Silver members and above the fifth night free on reward stays, and reward stays paid fully in points carry no resort fees.

IHG One Rewards offers a fourth reward night free through its Chase cards. The Premier card gives you a fourth reward night free when you redeem points for four consecutive nights at the same hotel. On the no-fee IHG One Rewards Credit Card, the same benefit starts in 2027 and needs $5,000 in purchases in a calendar year.

Say you take two four-night trips a year at the same 30,000-point IHG hotel. With the Premier, each trip costs three nights of points instead of four. That's the math to run against Hilton's and Marriott's fifth-night perks, which need a five-night stay.

Credit Card Ecosystem

Each program has co-branded cards that grant elite status and speed up earning. If you won't reach the night counts above on stays alone, the card is usually the shortest path to status.

IHG cards (Chase). The IHG One Rewards Premier ($150 annual fee) comes with automatic Gold Elite, an Anniversary Free Night with a 50,000-point redemption cap (you can add points to book above that), up to 24X total points at IHG, the fourth reward night free and 30% off points purchases. Spend $15,000 in a calendar year and you get Platinum; spend $40,000 and you get Diamond. The no-fee IHG One Rewards Credit Card, formerly the Traveler, comes with Silver Elite and up to 17X total points at IHG.

Marriott cards (Amex and Chase). The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ($650, Amex) comes with Platinum Elite, 6X at Marriott, a yearly Free Night Award up to 85,000 points and a $300 Brilliant Dining Credit (up to $25 a month at restaurants). The Bevy ($250, Amex) and Bountiful ($250, Chase) come with Gold Elite and 15 Elite Night Credits a year; the Bountiful adds a Free Night Award up to 50,000 points after $15,000 in calendar-year spend. The Boundless ($95, Chase) comes with Silver Elite, 15 Elite Night Credits and an annual Free Night Award up to 35,000 points.

Hilton cards (Amex). The Hilton Honors Aspire ($550) comes with Diamond status, an annual Free Night Reward, up to $400 a year in Hilton Resort credits ($200 semi-annually), up to $200 a year in flight credits ($50 a quarter) and 14X at Hilton. The Hilton Honors Surpass ($150) comes with Gold status, 12X at Hilton, up to $200 a year in Hilton credits ($50 a quarter) and a Free Night Reward after $15,000 in calendar-year spend. The no-annual-fee Hilton Honors card comes with Silver, which is enough for the fifth night free on reward stays.

Pick the card whose credits and free night you'll actually use, not the one with the most impressive tier name.

Transfer Partner Access

What matters here is which flexible currencies feed in.

Marriott Bonvoy lists American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards among its transfer partners, and both move at 1:1 (Amex's transfer page shows 1,000 Membership Rewards points becoming 1,000 Bonvoy points).

IHG One Rewards is a Chase Ultimate Rewards partner. Chase's Sapphire Preferred page lists four hotel partners: IHG One Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt and Wyndham Rewards. Chase says most partners transfer at 1:1 and Hyatt at 4:3.

Hilton Honors isn't on that Chase list, but it is an Amex partner: 1,000 Membership Rewards points become 2,000 Hilton Honors points. Hilton's own points page lists stays, member promotions, its credit cards, Lyft rides and dining as the ways to earn.

If your flexible points are Chase, IHG and Marriott are the two of these three you can top up directly. If they're Amex, it's Marriott and Hilton. If you mostly earn through co-branded cards, all three work without outside transfers.

Best-Fit Traveler Profiles

The cleanest way to choose is to match your real travel pattern to the program built for it.

Choose Marriott Bonvoy if you travel to a broad mix of cities, you care about luxury hotels, and you'll reach Platinum at 50 nights or through the Brilliant card. Platinum is the tier that brings lounge access and select suite upgrades.

Choose Hilton Honors if your travel leans toward U.S. road trips, mid-scale hotels and family stays (Hampton, Garden Inn, Embassy Suites), and you want status that pays at the front desk. Gold at 25 nights, or through the Surpass, brings the food and beverage credit or breakfast. If you'd use the Aspire's resort and flight credits, it gets you Diamond without the 50 nights.

Choose IHG One Rewards if you book four-night award stays, you stay often where Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express are the local option, or you want low-fee status (the Premier is $150 with Gold). The Premier is the card for almost any IHG-leaning traveler.

Run two programs if your travel splits cleanly, for example Marriott for business trips where coverage matters and Hilton or IHG for personal travel. The trap is being a casual member of all three. Say you split 24 nights evenly: eight in each program falls short of Silver, which takes 10 nights at all three. Concentrate your stays in one, add a second only where its hotels win, and let the third lapse.

Putting It Together

Three questions decide most of this. Where do you actually stay? Marriott for a broad mix and luxury, Hilton for domestic mid-scale, IHG for Holiday Inn brands and longer award stays.

How many nights will you log this year? Under 20, a status card is your shortcut. At 25, Hilton Gold and Marriott Gold are in reach on stays alone; IHG Gold needs 20. Marriott Platinum and Hilton Diamond need 50, and IHG Diamond needs 70.

What flexible points do you earn? Chase points reach IHG and Marriott directly; Amex points reach Marriott at 1:1 and Hilton at 1:2.

Start with last year's stays, then pick the program and card that match them. For a wider look that adds Hyatt and the smaller chains, see our best hotel loyalty programs guide.
