Key Points

  • SoFi Checking and Savings fits people paid by direct deposit, which earns the 3.30% savings APY and paychecks up to two days early, plus $50 of overdraft coverage at $1,000 or more every 31 days.
  • New members who open by December 31, 2026 can add a 0.90% APY boost for up to six months and a $50 or $400 bonus based on direct deposits.
  • Without direct deposit or $5,000 in deposits every 31 days, savings earn 0.80% APY, and retail partners may charge up to $4.95 per cash deposit.

SoFi Checking and Savings pays 3.30% APY on savings, but only while your paycheck or $5,000 in deposits lands there every 31 days. That one condition shapes this whole review. Direct deposit also brings paychecks up to two days early, and $1,000 or more of it every 31 days adds $50 of fee-free overdraft coverage. Without either, the same savings balance earns 0.80% APY.

I read every figure here from SoFi's and Chime's own pages on October 8, 2026. SoFi says its rates are current as of September 23, 2026, and they're variable, so treat them as a snapshot. Below: what the account pays, what it charges, how the welcome offer works, how SoFi words its FDIC coverage, and who should open one.

Quick Summary

Best For: People paid by direct deposit who want checking and a high-yield savings account in one app.

Standout Benefit: 3.30% APY on savings and Vaults with eligible direct deposit, with no maximum balance on that rate.

Biggest Drawback: No branches, and cash deposits go through retail partners that may charge up to $4.95 each.

Current Offer: $50 or $400 for eligible direct deposits, with the first one received by December 31, 2026, plus a 0.90% APY boost for new members who open by December 31, 2026.

What SoFi Checking and Savings Is

SoFi Bank, N.A. offers the account, and it's a Member FDIC bank. You don't choose between checking and savings: SoFi opens both together and says it doesn't offer standalone checking or savings accounts. There's no minimum balance to open, you must be 18 or older, and everything runs through the SoFi app, where SoFi offers live customer support seven days a week.

The savings side lets you split money into Vaults for separate goals, and Vaults earn the same APY as the main savings balance. SoFi currently lists no limits on savings withdrawals or on transfers between checking, savings and Vaults.

The APY and Its Direct Deposit Condition

Savings and Vaults earn 3.30% APY if you receive eligible direct deposit or at least $5,000 in qualifying deposits every 31 days. Miss both and savings earn 0.80% APY. Checking balances earn 0.50% APY. SoFi says there's currently no maximum balance on the 3.30% rate.

Eligible direct deposit means recurring ACH deposits of regular income: payroll, a pension or government benefits such as Social Security. SoFi's list of what doesn't count is long. It includes check deposits, transfers from Zelle, PayPal, Venmo and Wise, merchant payouts from PayPal, Stripe or Square, bank ACH transfers, wires from outside accounts and IRS tax refunds.

If your income comes in through those channels, the $5,000 route is the one to look at. SoFi counts ACH transfers, inbound wires, peer-to-peer transfers and check deposits toward the $5,000, though moves between your own SoFi accounts, interest and SoFi bonuses don't count.

SoFi checks all of this on a rolling 31-day window. Each eligible direct deposit, or each $5,000 in qualifying deposits, starts a new 31-day period at the higher rate.

The 0.90% APY Boost for New Members

New members can add a limited-time 0.90% APY boost to the 3.30%, for up to 4.20% APY. To get it, open your first SoFi Checking and Savings account between September 3 and December 31, 2026. Then, within 60 days, receive an eligible direct deposit or $5,000 in qualifying deposits.

The boost lasts up to six months from the day it starts and applies to one savings account. You keep it only while the direct deposit or the $5,000 every 31 days keeps coming. If you've had a SoFi Checking and Savings account before, you're not eligible. SoFi says that if its variable APY changes during those six months, the 0.90% still sits on top of the new base rate.

Fees

SoFi charges no monthly account fee, no minimum balance fee and no overdraft fee, and its FAQ adds no fees for dormant accounts. The fees that do exist are tied to specific transactions.

An outbound domestic wire costs $30. An outgoing Instant Transfer costs 0.75% of the amount, with a $1 minimum and a $30 maximum. Global remittance transfers cost 0.50% of the amount. SoFi doesn't charge for cash deposits, but the retail partners that take your cash may charge up to $4.95 per deposit.

For cash withdrawals, SoFi gives you 55,000+ fee-free ATMs in the Allpoint network. Use a machine outside that network and any third-party fee is yours: SoFi's fee page says those fees aren't reimbursed.

Early Paycheck

Set up direct deposit and SoFi can release your pay up to two days early, automatically. SoFi ties the timing to when it gets notice of the payment from the Federal Reserve, which it says is typically up to two days before the scheduled date but can vary. Plan your bills around your normal payday and treat the early arrival as a cushion.

Overdraft: Two Features With Similar Names

SoFi has two overdraft tools, and the names are easy to mix up.

Overdraft Protection is available to every member from day one at no cost. If checking runs short, SoFi pulls from your savings balance (never your Vaults) to cover the payment, whether it's a debit card purchase, an ACH bill payment or a check. You turn it on in the app under Overdraft settings.

Overdraft Coverage needs $1,000 or more in eligible direct deposits within a rolling 31-day period. It lets your checking balance go to negative $50 on debit card purchases only, including Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Wallet payments, with no fee. It won't cover ATM or over-the-counter cash withdrawals, ACH transfers, peer-to-peer transfers or Bill Pay. Your next deposit pays the negative balance back automatically, and SoFi says members with a history of unpaid negative balances aren't eligible.

FDIC Insurance, As SoFi Words It

SoFi Bank is a Member FDIC bank, and accounts get standard FDIC coverage of up to $250,000 per member; SoFi says joint accounts are insured up to $500,000.

For more, you can enroll in the SoFi Insured Deposit Program at no cost. SoFi places your funds in deposit accounts at participating banks, each insured by the FDIC up to $250,000 per ownership category, for total coverage of up to $3M through the program. SoFi's participating bank list includes Citibank, Morgan Stanley Bank and The Huntington National Bank.

SoFi warns that balances you already hold at one of those banks count toward that bank's coverage, so check the list if you bank at any of them. Enrolling doesn't change the APY you earn.

The Welcome Bonus: $50 or $400

SoFi's Direct Deposit Bonus is open to new and existing members who have never set up direct deposit with SoFi, and the promotion runs from May 15 through December 31, 2026. It's one bonus per member.

Your first eligible direct deposit of $1 or more must reach SoFi by December 31, 2026. SoFi then adds up the eligible direct deposits it receives within 25 calendar days of that first one. A total of $1,000 to $4,999.99 earns $50, $5,000 or more earns $400, and anything under $1,000 earns nothing.

SoFi sets the bonus amount from your total eligible direct deposits, the payroll, pension or benefit deposits defined above. On a joint account, only the primary account holder's direct deposits count. The money lands in checking within seven business days of meeting the requirements, your account must be open and in good standing when it pays, and SoFi may report it to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 3.30% APY on savings and Vaults with eligible direct deposit or $5,000 in deposits every 31 days, with no maximum balance on that rate.
  • No monthly, minimum balance or overdraft fees.
  • Up to $3M of FDIC coverage through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program when you opt in, at no cost.
  • Overdraft Protection from savings is free for every member from day one.
  • 55,000+ fee-free ATMs in the Allpoint network.

Cons

  • Without direct deposit or $5,000 every 31 days, savings earn 0.80% APY.
  • Overdraft Coverage tops out at $50 and covers debit card purchases only.
  • No branches, and retail partners may charge up to $4.95 per cash deposit.
  • Outgoing Instant Transfers cost 0.75% ($1 minimum, $30 maximum), and domestic wires cost $30.
  • The $400 tier needs $5,000 of direct deposits within 25 days of the first one.

How SoFi Compares With Chime

Chime is the obvious alternative for a no-fee mobile account, and I read its pages the same day. The biggest difference is structural. SoFi Bank, N.A. is itself the bank. Chime describes itself as a financial technology company, not a bank, with banking services from The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A.

On savings, SoFi's 3.30% needs direct deposit or $5,000 every 31 days. Chime pays 1.00% APY as standard, 3.00% with Chime Plus status (a single $200+ qualifying direct deposit, or $400+ in total, in the preceding 34 days) and 4.00% with Chime Prime ($3,000+ in qualifying direct deposits in the past 34 days). If your direct deposits reach $3,000 in 34 days, Chime's Prime rate beats SoFi's standard rate, while SoFi's new-member boost to 4.20% lasts up to six months.

Overdraft is close but different. SoFi covers up to $50 on debit card purchases with $1,000+ in direct deposits. Chime's SpotMe starts at $20 and may rise to $200 or more, needs $200+ in monthly direct deposits and also covers cash withdrawals.

SoFi offers 55,000+ fee-free ATMs to Chime's 47,000+. On insurance, SoFi's program reaches up to $3M when you opt in. Chime's coverage is pass-through: FDIC insurance applies at its partner banks up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, and Chime Savings funds can be placed at one or more Program Banks. For cash, Chime takes fee-free deposits at Walgreens; SoFi's retail partners may charge up to $4.95.

If you're still earning a big bank's savings rate, our look at the national average savings rate versus the FDIC's rate cap shows what that gap is worth.

Who Should Get SoFi Checking and Savings

Great Fit

You're paid by direct deposit from an employer, a pension or Social Security and want checking plus a 3.30% savings account in one app. You keep a large cash cushion and want FDIC coverage beyond $250,000 without opening accounts at several banks yourself. Or you're new to SoFi and can route at least $1,000 of paychecks there within 25 days of your first direct deposit, which earns the $50 bonus and the 0.90% boost of up to six months together.

Not Ideal

You handle a lot of cash, since every cash deposit goes through a retail partner that may charge up to $4.95. Your income arrives by Zelle, PayPal or merchant payouts and you can't move $5,000 in every 31 days, which leaves savings at 0.80%. Or you want a branch to walk into, or overdraft coverage beyond your savings balance that also covers ATM withdrawals, rather than $50 of debit purchases.

Final Verdict

If your paycheck can move to SoFi, open it. The 3.30% savings rate with no balance cap, free Overdraft Protection from savings and the up-to-$3M FDIC program come with no monthly fee, and new members who open by December 31, 2026 can add the 0.90% boost and a $50 or $400 bonus on top. Route at least $1,000 of direct deposits there within 25 days of the first one, or $5,000 if you want the $400 tier.

If your income doesn't arrive by direct deposit and you can't move $5,000 every 31 days, skip it, because 0.80% isn't a reason to switch. The APY is variable, so confirm the current rate on SoFi's banking page the day you apply.
