The Shell Performance Elite World Mastercard earns 4% back at Shell, 3% at restaurants and grocery stores, and 2% everywhere else, with no annual fee. Those rates look like a strong cash back card's. They aren't cash back. Every dollar you earn comes back only as a statement credit against Shell purchases, so what this card is worth to you depends almost entirely on how much you already spend at Shell.

Here's how the rewards actually work, what the fine print says about redeeming and losing them, and who should carry it. Everything below comes from Shell's card page, its Rewards Program Terms (effective May 15, 2026) and the Cardholder Agreement (effective May 1, 2026), read on September 30, 2026.

What the Shell Card Earns

The rewards terms set three rates. They're uncapped for now, though Imprint, which runs the program for Shell, can add limits later with notice. Here's what each covers:

  • 4% at Shell Locations, which the terms define as participating Shell-branded retail stations in the United States, whether Shell or an independent retailer runs them. That covers fuel, EV charging and in-store purchases at the station.
  • 3% on dining and groceries. Dining means merchants categorized as eating places, restaurants, drinking places, fast food and caterers; groceries means grocery stores, supermarkets, delis and bakeries.
  • 2% on everything else, excluding balance transfers, cash advances, gift and prepaid cards, cryptocurrency and person-to-person payments.

The categories run on merchant codes, and the terms list the ways that goes wrong. A restaurant inside a hotel or department store may code as the hotel or store rather than dining. A Shell station using a merchant ID that isn't tied to Shell may not earn 4%. Paying through a third party or a mobile card reader can change the code too.

The Catch: Rewards Only Pay You Back at Shell

This is the part to understand before you apply. Your rewards have no cash value. At the end of each billing cycle in which you make a purchase at a Shell station, the rewards in your balance are applied automatically as a statement credit against those Shell purchases.

Two things follow from that. In a month with no Shell purchase, nothing is redeemed, even if you've earned plenty. And if your balance is bigger than that month's Shell spending, only enough is used to cover the Shell charges, and the rest waits for the next month you buy something at Shell.

Say you earn more at restaurants and grocery stores than you spend on gas. The extra keeps building in your balance with nowhere to go except future Shell purchases. That's why the 3% and 2% rates are only worth their face value if your Shell spending can absorb them.

When Shell Rewards Expire or Disappear

Rewards expire if you have no qualifying activity for 13 months after you earn them, and qualifying activity includes any charge posting to the card, so an active card keeps them alive. They can be forfeited if the card is closed, and you can't redeem while the card is canceled or past due. Close the card with a balance you haven't used at Shell and you risk losing it.

If you already had a Shell card before May 18, 2026, when accounts moved to Imprint, the terms say rewards you'd earned stay available and redeem the same way as new ones.

The Welcome Offer and Fees

New cardholders get $50 back after $500 in net spend within 60 days of opening the account, paid as a statement credit within 8 to 12 weeks of qualifying. Shell says the offer is good once, for new cardholders only.

There's no annual fee. The cardholder agreement says a 3% foreign transaction fee may be charged, and lists a late payment fee of up to $41 and a returned payment fee of up to $25. The purchase APR is variable and tied to the Prime Rate, so check the rate on your own offer before you accept it. Shell's page says you can see whether you're approved without any impact to your credit score, and accepting an offer triggers a hard credit pull.

Other Benefits

The card is issued by First Bank & Trust and managed in Imprint's app, where you can track rewards, schedule payments and add authorized users at no extra charge, and it works with Apple Pay and Google Wallet. As a World Mastercard, it comes with Mastercard's offers, which on Shell's page include a $5 Lyft credit in any month you take three Lyft rides paid with the card, and $10 off your second Instacart order each month when your Instacart+ membership is paid with the card. Both are limited-time offers that Shell's page says run through January 31, 2027. You can also link the card to Shell's separate Fuel Rewards program.

Who Should Apply for the Shell Credit Card

It fits you if you fill up at Shell regularly and would rather have a discount on those fill-ups than points to manage. As long as your Shell spending each month is larger than what you earn, the rewards are used as fast as the card earns them, and the 3% on dining and groceries makes the discount bigger.

It doesn't fit you if Shell is only one of the stations you use, or if you want rewards you can spend anywhere. The foreign transaction fee also rules it out as a travel card.

Final Verdict

Apply if Shell is your regular station and your Shell spending each month is at least as large as what you'd earn. If it isn't, most of the value sits in a balance you can only spend at the pump. You can see whether you're approved without a hard pull on Shell's card page.
