Key Points

  • The card has no annual fee and earns 5% back on safeway.com and Safeway app orders, including pickup and delivery.
  • It earns 3% back on groceries and pharmacy purchases in Safeway stores and on gas, dining and bills, and 1% back on everything else.
  • The $50 statement credit needs $1,000 in purchases within 90 days, and spending at Albertsons Companies stores does not count toward it.

Safeway and Imprint have launched the Safeway forU American Express card, a no-annual-fee card that earns up to 5% back on Safeway online orders. The figures below are as reported at launch.

What the Card Earns

  • 5% back on purchases at safeway.com and in the Safeway app, including pickup and delivery orders.
  • 3% back on grocery and pharmacy purchases in Safeway stores.
  • 3% back on gas, dining and bills.
  • 1% back on everything else.

There is no annual fee.

The Welcome Offer

New cardmembers can earn a $50 statement credit after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days. Spending at Albertsons Companies stores does not count toward the $1,000, so your Safeway groceries won't help you reach it. You would need to put other spending on the card to qualify.

Who It Fits

The top rate applies at a single grocery chain: the 5% is limited to Safeway's website and app, and the in-store rate is 3%. If you shop at Safeway every week and use pickup or delivery, the 5% rate is the part worth a look. If you split your grocery spending across stores, a general card that earns 3% or more on groceries anywhere will cover more of it. Our guide to the top credit cards for groceries compares those options.

The $50 welcome credit is small next to what many cards offer, so the card is a long-term earn-rate play more than a sign-up bonus play.
