Key Points

  • All Mosaic members and JetBlue Premier cardmembers, authorized users included, will soon be able to upgrade to BlueFirst at no cost when seats are open.
  • Cardmembers without Mosaic status have to pay the base fare with the Premier card, and they rank last in the upgrade line.
  • Main, Main Flex, EvenMore and EvenMore Flex fares qualify on JetBlue-operated BlueFirst flights, and upgrades begin to clear 60 minutes before departure.

JetBlue says all Mosaic members and JetBlue Premier cardmembers will soon be able to move up to BlueFirst at no cost when seats are open. The TrueBlue page covers Mosaic 1 through 4, and it covers Premier cardmembers with or without Mosaic status, authorized users included. If you hold the card but not Mosaic, you have to pay the base fare with the Premier card.

BlueFirst is JetBlue's new first class cabin. Our BlueFirst guide covers the seats, routes and fares, and this is how the free upgrade works on top of that.

Which Fares and Flights Qualify

JetBlue lists Main, Main Flex, EvenMore and EvenMore Flex fares, whether you paid cash, TrueBlue points or Cash + Points. Main Base and EvenMore Base fares are excluded. Our JetBlue fares guide explains what each fare includes.

The upgrade applies only to JetBlue-operated flights that have BlueFirst. JetBlue says it isn't available on Mint flights or on partner-airline flights.

How the Upgrade Line Works

Upgrades clear on a space-available basis, in upgrade-list order, beginning 60 minutes before departure. JetBlue says timing is subject to change and isn't guaranteed. Eligible members are added automatically at check-in, and you can opt out there if you'd rather keep your seat. You have to be checked in to be upgraded.

The line runs in this order:

  1. Mosaic 4
  2. Mosaic 3
  3. Mosaic 2
  4. Mosaic 1
  5. Premier cardmembers without Mosaic status

Within each group, JetBlue breaks ties by whether you paid with a JetBlue credit card, then whether you bought an EvenMore fare, then the tiles you've earned this program year.

Bringing a Companion

One companion on the same reservation can be upgraded too, if that person is on an eligible fare. You both need open BlueFirst seats. If only one seat is open, you can take it, give it to your companion, or pass so you stay together.

Reservations with more than two travelers aren't considered. JetBlue says to move the eligible member and one companion to a separate reservation before check-in.

What You Get After the Upgrade

You get the BlueFirst seat and the onboard service. Pre-departure BlueFirst perks, such as dedicated check-in and the increased baggage allowance, aren't included. Your original fare rules still apply, and you earn points and tiles on the fare you bought.

Each flight is handled separately, so an upgrade doesn't carry over to a connecting flight. A voluntary change to your flight after an upgrade clears forfeits it. JetBlue can also revoke a cleared upgrade for an aircraft change, fewer BlueFirst seats, a cancellation or another operational reason.

When It Starts

JetBlue's upgrades page says members will "soon" be able to upgrade. Its October 15 BlueFirst announcement said Mosaic members on eligible fares would be eligible for these upgrades at launch. Check JetBlue's page before you plan a trip around a free upgrade.
