The Discover it Cash Back is a no-annual-fee cash back card from Discover that pays 5% in rotating categories and 1% on everything else. Discover's card page lists a $200 bonus statement credit after you spend $500 in the first 3 months, on top of its first-year Cashback Match. The bonus is worth it if you'd spend $500 on purchases in that window anyway, and the card is worth keeping if you'll activate the 5% categories each quarter.
This review covers what Discover says the card does, how the bonus and the match work together, and the kind of cardholder who gets the most from it. If you want this quarter's 5% categories, our Discover 5% categories guide for Q4 2026 lists them and how to activate.
The $200 Bonus
Discover's page offers a $200 bonus statement credit when you spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months. Discover calls it a one-time bonus and says it applies within two billing cycles. The page also says the bonus is available through that page, so it may not be available if you apply through another channel.
Discover says the offer terms on its page may be different from terms you see if you navigate away, so check the terms of your offer on Discover's page the day you apply. If you had a Discover it Cash Back and received a new cardmember bonus on it in the past 48 months, Discover says you may not be eligible.
The First-Year Cashback Match
At the end of your first year, Discover matches all the cash back you've earned from account approval through your first 365 days. Discover says there's no limit on how much it will match and no minimum spend to get the match. The match is added within two billing periods.
The match doesn't cover statement credits, transfers from Discover or Capital One deposit accounts, or rewards from closed accounts. Discover also says the match may not be available in the future and is for new cardholders only. The $200 bonus and the match are separate offers on the page, so you can read each one's terms on its own.
How You Earn
- 5% cash back in rotating categories each quarter, on everyday purchases at different places, up to the quarterly maximum. You have to activate the categories each quarter.
- 1% cash back on all other purchases.
Activation is the step people miss. Discover requires it for the 5% rate, so put a reminder in your calendar for the first week of each quarter. The Q4 guide above has the current list and the cap.
Discover says you can redeem your cash back any time after you earn it.
Fees and Rates
There's no annual fee. Discover's page lists a 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, and a balance transfer fee applies. After the intro period, the variable APR is 18.74% to 28.74%. Rates can change, so read the rates and fees on Discover's page before you apply.
Protections and Extras
Discover says you're never responsible for unauthorized purchases on your card, subject to its investigation and verification. You can lock the card in the mobile app if it's misplaced, lost or stolen. Through CreditWise, you get free alerts if your Social Security number is found on the dark web, along with a FICO Score 8 based on TransUnion data.
Is It Worth It?
The card fits someone who wants cash back without an annual fee and doesn't mind a quarterly routine. The match rewards new cardholders who put real spending on the card in year one, and the 5% categories pay off most when they overlap with what you already buy.
It's a weaker fit if you'd rather not activate categories, or if you want travel rewards. This card pays cash back. If you'd like to compare it with other cash back cards first, our guide to the best cash back credit cards with signup bonuses covers other options.
