Delta Air Lines won Best Airline Staff Service in North America at the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards, the fifth year in a row that travelers have given the carrier the title. Delta employees accepted it in London on September 18, and the airline published the news on September 22. The category is based entirely on customer feedback, and it covers the service travelers get at the airport and onboard.

That's a narrower claim than "best airline," and the gap matters before a trophy steers your next booking. Here's what Delta won, what the category measures, and how much weight it deserves next to fare and award price.

What Delta won

Skytrax runs the World Airline Awards, described in Delta's announcement as one of the industry's leading benchmarks for airline customer satisfaction. The Airline Staff Service category grades the combined quality of service delivered by airline employees at the airport and onboard. In other words, it's a score for people, not for planes, and a win reflects several touchpoints rather than one good flight.

The release lists the roles that feed into it:

  • Helping customers with reservations.
  • Welcoming customers at check-in.
  • Guiding travelers through disruptions.
  • Serving onboard.
  • Maintaining aircraft.
  • Supporting the operation behind the scenes.

Scale is part of the story. Delta says its people help serve nearly 200 million customers across approximately 5,000 daily flights each year. Five straight wins across that volume of interactions reads as a consistency result more than a single strong year.

Portraits in Times Square

Delta is marking the fifth win by putting its employees on display. Portraits of Delta workers are appearing in Times Square and on out-of-home displays across the country, with one line beside them: "This is what one of the best airline employees looks like."

"This award is a reflection of Delta people and the care they bring to every customer interaction, every day," said Charisse Evans, Delta's Vice President of Airport Operations Field Support. "To be recognized by travelers for a fifth consecutive year is incredibly meaningful because it speaks to the consistency of our people."

Skytrax framed the streak the same way. "To be recognized by customers for five consecutive years is a significant accomplishment," said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax.

What a staff award measures, and what it doesn't

Service awards get used as shorthand for overall quality, and they shouldn't be. This one grades the human layer: the agent who rebooks you when weather shuts Atlanta, the flight attendant working a full cabin, the crew keeping the aircraft on schedule. It doesn't grade seat width, Wi-Fi, lounge rules or what a business class seat costs in miles.

The title is also scoped to North America, which is the field Delta was measured in. And it's a survey result, so it reflects what customers reported rather than an audit of on-time performance or bag handling.

What survives those caveats is the streak. One year of strong scores can be noise. Five years of customer votes in the same category is a pattern, and it's the strongest thing in the release.

What changes for you

Nothing about SkyMiles pricing, upgrade order or lounge access moves because of an award. Delta's access rules are their own subject, and our Delta One Lounge access guide covers who gets in. The same goes for earning: whether a co-brand card makes sense still comes down to the credits and how often you fly, which is the question our Delta SkyMiles card comparison works through. If you're stacking hotel and airline earning, Delta's tie-up with Hyatt is a separate lever, and we covered what the Delta and Hyatt partnership pays.

Where the award earns its keep is as a tiebreaker. If Delta and another carrier are close on cash price and close on award cost for your route, five consecutive years of customer-scored service is a fair reason to pick Delta, especially on an itinerary with a tight connection where you might need an agent. If the gap is wide, book the cheaper seat. A service award doesn't refund a fare difference, and it won't make an award seat appear.
