Delta has postponed its Atlanta to Riyadh nonstop, which was set to launch on October 23, 2026, until March 2027. Delta cited evolving developments in the region and said the safety and security of its customers and employees come first. It would be the first nonstop between the United States and the Saudi capital operated by a US airline, and at over 7,000 miles one of the longest routes Delta flies, into a region where award routings have been unsettled.
The delay follows attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, where strikes hit on October 8 and another attack closed the airport on October 10.

The rest of this article is the route as Delta announced it on August 5, 2026, kept as it ran before the postponement. For SkyMiles members the interesting part was not the ribbon cutting. It was that Delta announced the route with a limited-time award deal in every cabin, and new long-haul routes are where award space is usually at its loosest.
The Schedule
Delta announced the service on August 5, 2026. It was to run daily for the first week, from October 23 to October 30, then three times weekly.
The aircraft was to be the Airbus A350-900 in Delta's four-cabin layout: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Delta Main. Halal meals could be selected at booking or any time before departure.
Delta also pitched the route in both directions. From Riyadh, the Atlanta hub puts more than 150 US cities within one connection, which is the part that makes a three-times-weekly long-haul viable in the first place.

Why a New Route Is Worth Watching If You Hold SkyMiles
When it announced the route, Delta said a limited-time SkyMiles Award Deal was available in all cabins for Riyadh travel. It did not publish the mileage level, so treat any number you see quoted elsewhere with suspicion and check delta.com for the live price before you plan a March 2027 trip around it.
The general pattern is the useful thing here. A new long-haul route opens with an aircraft that has to fly whether or not the cabin fills, and demand takes time to build. That combination tends to produce better award availability in the first months than the same route offers a year later, particularly in the premium cabins that are hardest to book with miles on established routes.
The planned three-times-weekly schedule also meant the inventory would be lumpy rather than steady. Fewer departures makes any single date harder, but it concentrates whatever award space exists into specific days, which rewards flexible dates more than usual.
What This Does Not Tell You
A launch award deal is a promotion, not a permanent price. Delta's dynamic award pricing means the number you see today is not a floor, a ceiling, or a commitment.
The route is also not a partner play in any obvious way. This is Delta metal on a Delta route into a Delta hub, so the redemption question is a SkyMiles question rather than a transfer-partner one. If you hold flexible points, the relevant move is a transfer into SkyMiles, which is worth checking against the cash fare rather than assuming.
And a first-week daily schedule that steps down to three weekly is normal for a route launch. It was not a signal about how the route would perform.
What This Means If You Fly Delta
If Riyadh is on your list, watch the award calendar in the first weeks of the March 2027 launch rather than the first days. Launch schedules settle, and some days will be far easier than others.
