United MileagePlus partner awards are easy to misjudge. United publishes no award chart, so there's no table of rates to memorize and no fixed price to chase. The price in United's search for your date is the price, and it can be different next week.
That changes how you hunt for value. This guide covers how United prices awards today, the features that make MileagePlus worth using for partner flights, and a search routine for comparing the final cost before you move any points.
How United Prices Partner Awards Today
United prices awards dynamically and publishes no award chart. You search united.com with "Book with miles" selected, and the price you see depends on your date and what's available. United has raised award prices before without notice, so a rate you read in an old post, including a chart someone built from their own searches, is a snapshot and not a published price.
The practical result is that I don't quote route prices for United partner awards. They move, and nothing official exists to cite. What I can give you is where the value tends to come from and how to check it yourself.
What Makes United Worth Using for Partner Flights
No Fuel Surcharges
United generally doesn't pass on fuel surcharges when you book partner flights with miles. You still pay government taxes and fees in cash, but the large surcharges some programs add on certain airlines don't show up. ANA's own program, for example, can add hundreds of dollars in taxes and fees on the same kind of ticket.
That makes the cash side of the checkout the number to compare. A partner flight that costs a few thousand miles more in United but far less in cash can be the better deal.
The Excursionist Perk
On eligible round trips, United's Excursionist Perk gives you a free one-way flight within your destination region, which works as a free stopover. It applies to United-operated and partner flights. Build a round trip that starts and ends in one region, with a destination in another, then add the free one-way inside the destination region. Confirm the rules for your itinerary on united.com before you book.
Star Alliance and a Few Others
United sells awards on Star Alliance carriers and on a handful of non-alliance partners. Hawaiian Airlines is bookable for inter-island flights only. Check united.com for the current partner list, since it changes.
What to Search For
Because there's no chart, the sweet spots are situations to test and not routes to memorize.
Partner flights to Europe. Redeeming on a partner to Europe can save a lot of miles compared with a United-operated flight. Partner flights on some routes also price higher than United's own. Search both on the same date and compare miles plus taxes.
Partners that add surcharges elsewhere. If another program quotes a lower mileage price on a surcharge-heavy airline, price the same flight in United and look at the cash total.
Seats that open cheaply. Partners sometimes release extra seats at lower prices when a flight is relatively empty, so check a route more than once instead of ruling it out on the first search.
Short-haul and inter-island flights. These can price low in miles, and Hawaiian inter-island awards are an example. Check the price against the cash fare before you spend miles.
How I Search Partner Awards
- Log in before you search. Cardholders and elite members can see additional or discounted inventory on United-operated flights.
- Select "Book with miles" in the search form.
- Look at the surrounding days. The results show prices for three days before and after your date. For a month, use Advanced search with the flexible dates box checked, and the calendar shows the lowest prices in green.
- Search early, as soon as seats are released, and again closer in. Award prices can climb the closer you get to departure, though partners sometimes release cheaper seats on flights that aren't filling.
- Price the same itinerary in another program, such as Aeroplan or LifeMiles, and compare the final miles plus cash.
Where Chase Points Fit In
Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to United MileagePlus at 1:1. You build a balance with cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve, hold the points, and transfer only when you've found a seat. Transfers are final, so run the search routine first.
Bilt Rewards also transfers to United at 1:1, and Marriott Bonvoy transfers at 3:1.
Before You Transfer
Search the exact flight you want on united.com, price the same flight in one other program, and compare miles plus taxes. If United wins, transfer only what that one booking needs.
