How much of Juneau can you see in one port call? Princess says many ships spend between six and 10 hours here, and Travel Juneau tells cruise passengers, "You're already downtown." The Goldbelt Tram, the Sea Walk and the downtown museums are within walking distance of the docks, while Mendenhall Glacier and whale watching need a ride or a tour. Pick by your ship's hours in port and the weather, and leave the rest.

Here's the plan for that one day. For how Juneau compares with the other stops on the route, see our Alaska cruise ports of call guide.

Where Cruise Ships Dock in Juneau

Celebrity says Juneau cruise ships dock at three terminals that run parallel to the downtown area, and that downtown is walkable from all three. Princess says ships dock near the heart of downtown. Celebrity adds that if your ship uses the AJ Dock, the farthest from downtown, a shuttle is provided, and Travel Juneau says ships at the AJ Dock run a free shuttle to the Goldbelt Tram. Check your itinerary for your dock before you plan the day.

On Foot From the Dock

Celebrity says most places downtown can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot. Travel Juneau lists the Goldbelt Tram, the Juneau Sea Walk, the Alaska State Capitol, the Alaska State Museum and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum among the top downtown sights, along with shops, restaurants, galleries and waterfront views.

The tram is the easiest first stop. Princess says it departs just steps from the cruise docks and climbs 1,800 feet up Mount Roberts, and Celebrity says it starts directly across from the South Cruise Ship Berth. Celebrity describes views, trails, a bald eagle display and a cultural center at the top. Holland America says hiking Mount Roberts offers a chance to see wild deer and bald eagles.

Out to Mendenhall Glacier

Princess places Mendenhall Glacier about 12 miles from the cruise port and says to reach it you can take a shuttle or taxi, or book a guided excursion. It lists trails, a visitor center and Nugget Falls, where it says a 377-foot waterfall tumbles into Mendenhall Lake.

Travel Juneau calls a glacier shuttle tour from downtown the easiest option, says taxis suit groups of 4 to 10 people, and says rideshare services operate in Juneau but need a cell signal. It also says the city bus was about $2 a ride as of 2025 and takes about an hour each way, which makes the trip an all-day outing. Travel Juneau adds that black bears are often seen near the glacier. Check the return time on any ride before you leave downtown.

Out on the Water

Celebrity says humpback whales feed in Auke Bay from May to September, orcas hunt the same waters, and small-boat whale watching shore excursions are available. Holland America says most whale-watching tours head north to Auke Bay and recommends bringing binoculars.

Holland America suggests a floatplane to a nearby wildlife reserve such as Chichagof or Admiralty Island to look for bears, and its featured Juneau shore excursions include seaplane glacier flights. Princess says popular excursions can fill quickly in peak season, so book ahead through your ship or an operator you've checked.

Plan Around the Rain

Travel Juneau calls Juneau a temperate rainforest and says to expect possible rain, with layers, a waterproof jacket and sturdy waterproof footwear. Princess says the weather can change quickly, even at the height of summer. If a downpour rolls in, the Alaska State Museum and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, both on Travel Juneau's list, keep you indoors downtown. Our Alaska cruise packing list covers the rain gear.

Three Ways to Spend the Day

  • Short call, all on foot: the tram up Mount Roberts, the Sea Walk, and one museum.
  • One big stop plus downtown: a glacier shuttle or whale watching trip, then the tram or a walk through the shops.
  • The glacier day: Mendenhall Glacier in the morning, with time left to wander the waterfront before all aboard.

Match the choice to your ship's call times and the weather, and check your cruise line's port page for the final word on your dock.
