Key Points

  • Hollywood Burbank Airport opened its new passenger terminal on October 13, 2026, built while the old terminal kept operating.
  • The first flights were an Alaska Airlines departure to Santa Rosa and a Southwest Airlines arrival from Las Vegas.
  • The airport lists valet parking in the parking structure, a new bar over the airfield, rideshare steps from the building and outdoor boarding that stays.

Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) opened its new passenger terminal on October 13, 2026. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, which owns and runs the airport, says it built the terminal from the ground up while the old one kept operating, then moved operations across. The airport calls it Los Angeles' first new commercial airport terminal in decades.

The first flights were an Alaska Airlines departure to Santa Rosa and a Southwest Airlines arrival from Las Vegas, according to the airport's opening-day release.

What's Inside the New Terminal

The airport's opening-day release lists these features:

  • Valet parking inside the airport's parking structure.
  • Rideshare pickup and drop-off steps from the building.
  • A new bar overlooking the airfield, plus rotating installations from local artists.
  • The outdoor boarding that BUR is known for, which stays.

Ahead of the opening, the airport said the terminal's design, known as the Icon, is inspired by the glamour of Hollywood and the film industry's roots, and that community feedback drove the choice. It also said passengers would find a variety of shopping and dining options, upgraded restrooms and more space to move around.

The airport's project site, Elevate BUR, lists the same number of passenger gates as before, 14.

Why the Airport Built It

The authority says safety drove the project. The new design puts more distance between the runways and the terminal building and meets current earthquake resilience and ADA accessibility standards. The project took two years, and at the ribbon-cutting Executive Director John Hatanaka said the old terminal had served travelers for 96 years.

In the opening-day release, Hatanaka said, "The new terminal delivers the convenient, traveler-friendly experience that has long set Hollywood Burbank Airport apart, while providing modern infrastructure designed to serve the region for decades to come."

Where BUR Sits

The airport describes itself as minutes from Universal Studios Hollywood, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, Pasadena and Downtown Los Angeles. It also ties the opening to the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with Southern California preparing to welcome visitors in the years leading up to them. The airport says the new terminal is well positioned to serve residents and visitors for decades to come.

If You Fly Out of BUR

Alaska and Southwest are the two airlines the airport named for the first flights. If you're flying Alaska from Burbank, our piece on Alaska's new West Coast routes covers the routes it added there.
