Flights With No TSA Line: SeaPort, JSX and Private Terminals Explained

You can skip the TSA checkpoint entirely on a small group of US flights: carriers that fly small aircraft out of private terminals under their own security programs. SeaPort Airlines in the Pacific Northwest says outright that its flights have "no TSA security screening," and asks you to check in just 20 minutes before departure. JSX, a public charter operator with 30-seat jets, flies from private terminals under what it calls a "TSA-approved security program."

That does not mean no security. It means different security, run by the operator, in a much smaller building. This guide explains how it works, where these flights go, and what you give up in exchange for the short walk to the plane.

How Flying Without a TSA Line Works

The big airline terminal is not the only door onto an airport. Most airports also have private terminals, run by companies called fixed base operators, or FBOs.

JSX's own FAQ explains the term: an FBO is "a private air facility located away from commercial terminals." These buildings serve private jets, charters and "other unique operators." JSX calls its FBOs and lounges "private terminals."

A handful of carriers sell seats, one at a time, from these buildings. Their passengers board from the private terminal rather than the main one, and each carrier describes its own security process, as the sections below quote.

The result feels like flying privately on a public ticket: you park near the door, check in minutes before departure and walk to the aircraft.

SeaPort Airlines: Seattle, Portland and Spokane

SeaPort Airlines is the clearest example, because its own site puts the claim in plain words.

No TSA screening. SeaPort's "What to Know" page says: "With convenient parking right out front of the terminals, and no TSA security screening, you check-in 20 minutes before your scheduled flight departure, hop on and go." Its homepage lists "No crowds, no TSA bottleneck" among its reasons to fly.

Where it flies. SeaPort's site lists three year-round airports:

Seattle, Boeing Field (BFI). SeaPort says the terminal is four miles south of downtown Seattle, with parking next to the terminal.
Portland, PDX Business Aviation. This is the general aviation facility at Portland International Airport, not the main terminal. SeaPort says its parking is next to the terminal off Frontage Road.
Spokane, Felts Field (SFF). SeaPort flies from the airport's art-deco terminal, which it says was built in 1932 and is part of a National Park Service Historic District.

SeaPort also serves Central Oregon through Redmond (RDM) during the summer season. Its news page says flights started May 22, 2026, running Fridays and Mondays through Labor Day weekend.

Schedule and check-in. SeaPort says flights start at 6:45 a.m., with up to 20 flights a day and a reduced weekend schedule. There is no online check-in. You go to the SeaPort counter when you arrive, and the site says to arrive 20 minutes before departure.

Parking and ground transport. SeaPort says parking is free and right by its terminals. It lists rental cars and rideshare at its Seattle and Portland locations.

The aircraft. SeaPort flies Pilatus aircraft, per its own pages and customer reviews it publishes.

JSX: Private Terminals Across the West, Texas, Florida and New York

JSX works differently. It is not a scheduled airline but "a unique public charter operator," in its own words, selling individual seats on "roomy 30-seat jets" between private terminals.

Security. JSX's FAQ describes its own "TSA-approved security program" and lists what that includes:

Vetting every customer through TSA Secure Flight, "the same TSA-provided background check process used by the major airlines."
Walk-through metal detectors.
Advanced x-ray technology.
Screening all customer and crewmember baggage for explosives and other dangerous items.
Confirming identification at check-in and at boarding.
Reinforced flight deck doors on every aircraft.

So JSX passengers are screened, just not in the main TSA line.

Check-in. JSX says customers must check in at least 20 minutes before a domestic flight, and suggests at least 30 minutes if you have bags to check. For international flights, the minimum is 45 minutes before departure, for document checks.

Parking. JSX says parking varies by private terminal, with valet parking available for a fee at most locations and self parking generally not available.

Bags. JSX's FAQ says Hop On fares include 2 bags at up to 50 pounds each, and All In fares include 3.

Where it flies. JSX's own route pages list city pairs that include Burbank, Carlsbad, Concord, Dallas, Denver, Destin, Fort Lauderdale, Gunnison, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Los Cabos, Miami, Monterey, Napa, Naples, New York, Oakland, Orange County, Reno, Salt Lake City, Santa Fe, Santa Monica, Scottsdale, Taos and Westchester County. Routes change by season, so check JSX's site for the current schedule.

Southern Airways Express: Mixed, Depending on the Airport

Southern Airways Express is a useful contrast, because its experience depends on where you board.

Its FAQ says that at Nashville, Southern's flights "do not depart from the main terminal at Nashville International Airport." They leave from Atlantic Aviation, a private terminal, where Southern notes there is no check-in counter and parking is free.

At other airports, Southern checks in at the main terminal. At Washington Dulles, for example, the FAQ says to check in at the main terminal, with check-in starting 90 minutes and closing 45 minutes before departure. At Atlanta, the counter is in the main terminal on the north domestic side.

Southern's FAQ also says that for connections to other airlines, passengers "will need to go back through airport security." Its site does not describe its own flights as TSA-free, so check the airport page for your route before assuming anything.

Southern's baggage rules are tight on some flights. Its FAQ says passengers on certain flights may bring multiple bags as long as the total weight does not exceed 30 pounds and the total outside measurements do not exceed 44 linear inches.

What You Still Need

Skipping the TSA line does not skip the ID rules.

REAL ID. JSX's FAQ says that since May 7, 2025, IDs must be REAL ID compliant, and customers without a compliant REAL ID "will not be able to travel." Southern's FAQ carries the same REAL ID requirement.

A seat that exists. These are small aircraft. JSX describes its jets as 30-seat aircraft, and SeaPort flies Pilatus planes. Book popular times early.

Bags that fit. Small aircraft have weight and balance limits. JSX publishes a 50-pound per-bag limit, and Southern says checked bag allowance may depend on weight and balance capacity on each flight.

The Trade-Offs

The short walk has costs, and they are worth being honest about.

Connections are harder. These flights do not share a secure area with the major airlines. Southern's FAQ says passengers connecting to another airline must claim their bags, recheck them and go back through security. Plan any connection as two separate trips.

Fewer flights and routes. SeaPort lists up to 20 flights a day across its network, with fewer on weekends. JSX's route map is broad but thin on any one pair. If a flight cancels, the next one may be hours away.

Build in slack. With a thinner schedule, a delay has fewer backups. Leave room in anything time-sensitive.

Points and status. Check each carrier's site before you assume a flight earns miles or elite credit with a major airline program. Paying with a card that earns well on travel purchases is the reliable way to earn something back.

What Happens on the Day

The travel day is where these flights feel most different from a big airport. Here is what each carrier's own pages say to expect, from the car park to the aircraft.

SeaPort

Before you leave. There is no online check-in, so there is nothing to do at home beyond booking. SeaPort's site links to its latest flight information, and weekend schedules are reduced, so confirm your flight time the day before.

Arriving. Park in the lot next to the terminal. At Boeing Field, SeaPort asks you to give your parking spot number to the customer service agent at the SeaPort counter. At Portland, parking is off Frontage Road, just off Airport Way.

Checking in. Walk to the SeaPort counter 20 minutes before departure. SeaPort says this is the whole check-in process.

Getting away at the other end. SeaPort lists Go Rentals at Boeing Field and Felts Field, with vehicles "prepared in advance and staged just outside the terminal," and says SeaPort guests get a preferred 20% rate when booking directly. Hertz is at Boeing Field too, and rideshare and taxis work at both Seattle and Portland.

JSX

Before you leave. Make sure your ID is REAL ID compliant, since JSX says customers without one "will not be able to travel." If you are flying internationally, have your travel documents ready for the 45-minute document check.

Arriving. JSX says valet parking is available for a fee at most private terminals and self parking generally is not. Drop-off and pickup at designated spots are fine.

Checking in. Arrive at least 20 minutes before a domestic flight, or 30 minutes if you are checking bags. Your ID is confirmed at check-in and again at boarding, and your bags are screened.

Getting away at the other end. JSX says many of its locations have rental cars from Go Rentals, its on-site partner, though not every location offers it.

Southern Airways Express

Before you leave. Look up your departure airport on Southern's site. Whether you use a private terminal or the main one depends on the airport.

Arriving and checking in. At Nashville, you go to Atlantic Aviation, where Southern says there is no check-in counter. At Dulles, check in at the main terminal, where check-in opens 90 minutes and closes 45 minutes before departure. Southern's FAQ says that if no agent is at the ticket counter, passengers should call its customer service center at 800-329-0485.

Is the Trade Worth It for You

For the right trip, yes. A Seattle to Portland business trip on SeaPort, or a Burbank to Las Vegas weekend on JSX, can save more time on the ground than the flight itself takes.

It is less useful for a long trip with connections, a family with a lot of luggage, or a traveler who needs the most frequent schedule.

A simple test: if you would otherwise drive, or if the big airport's security line is the worst part of the trip, price one of these flights. If you need to connect to a major airline, book the major airline instead.

Paying for These Flights

Seats on these carriers are sold like any other airfare, so the card you pay with still matters. A card that earns bonus points on airfare or travel purchases is the simplest way to get something back when the flight itself may not earn airline miles. Check the fare rules before you book, too. JSX's FAQ lists change fees that rise as departure gets closer on its Hop On fares, and lets you substitute a different passenger on a reservation up to 60 minutes before departure for a fee. That flexibility is unusual, and it is worth knowing about if your plans can shift.
