If you've ever held a Citi Strata Premier or the older Citi Premier, you can't earn the Strata Premier welcome bonus again. The same goes for the Strata Elite: one Strata Elite account at any point, and that card's bonus is off the table. As of September 23, 2026, Citi's offer terms on citi.com say the bonus "is not available if you currently have or previously had" the card, and they set no time window. In practice, that makes it a once-per-lifetime rule. "Lifetime" is our shorthand; the words below are Citi's.
This guide quotes the terms for each Strata card word for word, shows how they differ from the 48-month language on Citi's other cards, and walks through what it means if you're weighing the Strata Premier or the Strata Elite.
Citi's Strata welcome bonus wording, card by card
Each Strata card carries its own sentence, and each one names only its own accounts. Here they are as they appeared on citi.com on September 23, 2026.
Citi Strata Premier: "New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Premier® or a Citi Premier® account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards."
Citi Strata Elite: "New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Elite® account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards."
Citi Strata: "New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata℠ or a Citi Strata Student account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards."
The same sentences appear on Citi's Strata comparison page and in the offer box under the apply button on each card's page. There's no month count in any of them. "Currently have or previously had" covers anyone who has ever held the account.
How Citi's 48-month cards differ
All three Strata cards, the Strata Premier, Strata Elite and Strata, use "currently have or previously had" on citi.com as of September 23, 2026.
Several of Citi's other cards count in months instead. The Citi Double Cash page reads: "Bonus ThankYou® Points are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi Double Cash account in the past 48 months or if you converted another Citi credit card account on which you earned a new account bonus in the last 48 months into a Citi Double Cash account."
The American Airlines cards follow the same pattern. The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select page says the bonus is "not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® account in the past 48 months," and the AAdvantage Globe, AAdvantage Executive, AAdvantage MileUp and AAdvantage Business pages use matching 48-month sentences for their own accounts. The AT&T Points Plus card from Citi uses a 48-month window too.
Two differences stand out. The 48-month cards are triggered by having received a bonus, while the Strata cards are triggered by having had the account at all, bonus or not. And the 48-month clock eventually runs out, while the Strata wording has no clock.
If you're considering the Strata Premier
Ask yourself one question: have you ever had a Citi Strata Premier or a Citi Premier account? If yes, Citi's terms say the bonus isn't available to you, no matter how long ago you closed it or whether you earned a bonus on it the first time.
The Citi Premier mention matters. Citi's terms name the old Citi Premier right next to the Strata Premier, so an account you opened under the Citi Premier name counts. Someone who had one years ago and has since forgotten about it is caught by the same sentence.
If you've never had either, you clear this line of the terms. You still face the second sentence, which lets Citi decline the bonus based on "a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards." Treat the first sentence as a hard no and the second as a maybe.

If you're considering the Strata Elite
The Strata Elite clause names one account and one only: a Citi Strata Elite account. If you've ever held one, the bonus is out. The clause doesn't list the Strata Premier, the Citi Premier or the no-fee Strata, so holding one of those doesn't trip this sentence. The catch-all second sentence still applies, the same as on every Strata card.
That makes the timing of your first Strata Elite application worth some thought, because you get one shot at its bonus under these terms. Apply when the offer on the page is one you'd be glad to have earned, because there's no second attempt.

"Previously had" and downgraded or closed cards
Read literally, it means any Strata Premier or Strata Elite account you ever held counts, whether it's open, closed or downgraded. If you move a Strata Premier down to the no-fee Strata, you previously had a Strata Premier, so a fresh Strata Premier application wouldn't earn its bonus under the current terms. And since you'd now currently have a Strata, the no-fee Strata's bonus is covered by its own clause too.
That's the trade-off to weigh before you close or downgrade. Our guide to downgrading the Citi Strata Premier walks through what you keep and lose.
The rule also changes how you build a set of Citi cards. If you're planning around the Citi Trifecta of Strata Premier, Double Cash and Custom Cash, the Strata Premier bonus is a one-time event, while the Double Cash counts in 48-month windows.
Applying now versus waiting
If you've never had a Strata Premier, Citi Premier or Strata Elite and you'd use the card, the rule itself isn't a reason to wait. It's a reason to apply when the offer shown on the card's page is one you're happy with, because you won't get another bonus on that card. Check the offer box on citi.com before you submit, since Citi notes that "Offers may vary and this offer may not be available in other places where the card is offered."
If you've held the card before, Citi's own terms answer the question. Pick the card for its ongoing value, or look at a Strata card you've never had.
If you're applying for the Citi Strata Premier, read the offer terms on the application page first; that's the version that applies to you.
