Citi won't pay the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select welcome bonus if you've received a new account bonus on a Platinum Select account in the past 48 months, or if you converted another Citi card that earned a bonus in the last 48 months into a Platinum Select. The offer is also limited to people who live in the United States and its territories, excluding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. American's card page lists 50,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months, with a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $99. Citi says the fee will be $150 as of January 24, 2027.

This guide quotes the eligibility language from Citi's and American's own card pages, so you can check your history against the exact words before you apply.

What the Brand Pages Say About the Offer

American's Platinum Select page labels it a "NEW CARDMEMBER OFFER" to "Earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles plus travel benefits," with "Bonus miles earned after $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening." The fee line reads "$0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $99." Citi's October 27, 2026 release adds: "The annual fee for this credit card will be $150 as of 1/24/27. However, this fee is waived for the first 12 months of account opening."

Citi's Platinum Select page calls it a "Limited Time Offer" and says the annual fee is "waived for the first year." Both pages warn: "This offer may not be available if you leave this page. Offers may vary and this offer may not be available in other places where the card is offered." Confirm the figures on the page you apply through.

Citi's Platinum Select Eligibility Rule, Word for Word

Here is the "Offer availability" paragraph from the terms on American's page:

"New account bonus is not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select account in the past 48 months or if you converted another Citi credit card account on which you earned a new account bonus in the last 48 months into a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select account. The card offer referenced in this communication is only available to individuals who reside in the United States and its territories, excluding Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands."

Citi's own page carries a version of that first sentence in its offer box: "American Airlines AAdvantage new cardmember bonus offer not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select account in the past 48 months or if you converted another Citi credit card account on which you earned a new account bonus in the last 48 months into a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select account." Its pricing section adds: "New card members only. Subject to credit approval."

That sets four tests:

  1. New cardmembers only, subject to credit approval.
  2. No Platinum Select bonus in the past 48 months. A bonus you received on a Platinum Select account.
  3. No converted card that earned a recent bonus. A Citi card that earned a bonus in the last 48 months, then converted into a Platinum Select.
  4. Where you live. Residents of the United States and its territories, excluding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How This Compares With the Executive Card's Rule

American's Executive page carries the same 48-month sentence with the Executive account named in place of the Platinum Select, and our guide to the Executive card's bonus eligibility quotes it in full. This card's rule names Platinum Select accounts and conversions into one, so go by the wording above.

The AAdvantage Account You Need

Citi's terms say: "The Card Account is only available if you have an open AAdvantage program membership in your name. Citi reserves the right to cancel your Card Account if you or American Airlines terminates or deactivates your AAdvantage program membership."

Citi's terms say miles earned "will be posted to the primary credit cardmember's AAdvantage account."

What Counts Toward the Spend and When the Miles Post

Citi lists what isn't a purchase: "Balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler's checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions) are not purchases."

Two more lines matter if you're cutting it close. Citi says "AAdvantage miles may be earned on purchases made by primary credit cardmembers and Authorized Users." It also says "Purchases must post to your account during the promotional period. Many merchants will wait for a purchase to ship before they post the purchase to your account."

On timing, Citi's terms say the bonus miles "typically will appear as a bonus in your AAdvantage account 8-10 weeks after you have met the purchase requirements." Don't book an award that depends on the bonus until it appears.

What Citi Says About Fraud and Misuse

Citi's terms say that if it "sees evidence of fraud, misuse, abuse, or suspicious activity, as determined by Citi in its sole discretion," it can take action against you and your account. That "may include, without limitation and without prior notice, declining your credit card account application, stopping you from earning American Airlines AAdvantage miles for purchases made with your card, suspending or closing your Citi / AAdvantage card account, and advising American Airlines of such activity."

The terms list four examples: "(1) application for a card account in an attempt to take advantage of a bonus offer that was not intended for you or for which you are not eligible per the terms of the offer; (2) repeated cancellation or conversion of your Citi card accounts within one year after account opening or conversion; (3) returns of purchases you made to satisfy all or a substantial portion of the purchase requirements for a bonus offer or excessive returns of purchases for which you have earned AAdvantage miles or (4) using your account other than for personal, family, or household purposes."

The third one is the trap: buying something large to reach the spend, then returning it.

Your Next Step

Check when you last received a Platinum Select bonus, and whether a Citi card you converted into one earned a new account bonus in the last 48 months. If either falls inside 48 months, wait. Keep your AAdvantage account open and in your name, and plan spending that will post in time and won't be returned.

If you pass those checks, you can apply for the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select card. Citi says the annual fee goes to $150 on January 24, 2027, and our article on the fee change and the new benefits covers what you get for it.
