Introduction

The Citi Strata is what happens when an issuer takes a no-annual-fee rewards card and quietly slips in transfer partners. That's unusual. Most $0 cards earn cash back or fixed-value points, and if you want to send your earnings to airlines and hotels, you typically have to pay an annual fee somewhere in the lineup. The Strata breaks that pattern, which is why it deserves a closer look in 2026 even if it doesn't make headlines the way the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Capital One Venture do.

This review walks through the earning structure, the welcome bonus, who Citi designed this card for, and where it gets outclassed. If you're trying to decide whether the Strata earns a slot in your wallet, you'll have your answer by the end. Note: this is the entry-level Citi Strata, not the premium Citi Strata Elite at $595 annually. Different cards, different strategies.

Quick Summary

Best For: Newer points collectors who want transfer-partner access without paying an annual fee, or experienced cardholders building a no-fee base layer.

Standout Benefit: 3x at supermarkets, on gas and EV charging, on select transit and on one category you choose, with access to Citi ThankYou transfer partners.

Biggest Drawback: Restaurants earn only 2x, everything outside the bonus categories earns 1x, and Citi charges a 3% foreign purchase fee.

Current Offer: 20,000 bonus points after $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months, plus 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers (then a variable 18.74% to 28.74%).

Citi Strata Overview

The Strata sits in Citi's no-annual-fee tier, designed as the entry point to the ThankYou ecosystem. It's a Mastercard. Where it gets interesting is the points themselves: ThankYou Points earned on the Strata can be transferred to Citi's airline and hotel partners.

Citi's Strata page lists transfers to American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, EVA Air, Choice Hotels, The Leading Hotels of the World and others, and Citi's transfer terms add partners such as Avianca LifeMiles, Singapore KrisFlyer, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Wyndham Rewards. Those terms also say redemption rates may vary depending on which Citi card you hold, so check the Strata's rate before you transfer.

That last point matters more than it sounds. If the Strata's rate for your partner matches what the premium cards get, you have one of the best $0 travel cards on the market. If it's lower, compare it with the rate on the Strata Premier or Strata Elite before you decide which card earns your spending.

Key Features and Benefits

3x at Supermarkets, Gas and a Category You Choose

The Strata's 3x earning comes in two parts. Supermarkets, gas and EV charging stations, and select transit (Citi's list includes car rentals, commuter rail, subways, taxis and car services, tolls and parking) earn 3x automatically. On top of that, you pick one Self-Select Category from Citi's list: fitness clubs, select streaming services, live entertainment, cosmetic stores, barber shops and hair salons, or pet supply stores. New accounts start on select streaming services, and you can switch once each calendar quarter at citi.com/selfselect.

This is genuinely useful for two reasons. First, groceries and fuel earn 3x without any choosing. Second, if your spending shifts (say, you join a gym or cancel a streaming service), you can move the self-select category the next quarter.

What it isn't: a dining card. Restaurants earn 2x on the Strata. The Amex Gold earns 4x at restaurants worldwide (on up to $50,000 a year) and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 a year), and the Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 3x on dining. If restaurants are your biggest category, either of those beats the Strata there.

Restaurants at 2x and Citi Travel at 5x

Restaurants, including takeout and restaurant delivery services, earn 2x on the Strata. Hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi Travel on cititravel.com earn 5x.

1x on Everything Else

Standard base rate. Nothing to write home about. This is where a 2% catch-all card like the no-fee Citi Double Cash (1% when you buy, 1% as you pay) earns its place in your wallet alongside the Strata. Use the Strata for the bonus categories, and put non-bonus spending on the 2% card.

Foreign Purchase Fee and Intro APR

Here's the catch for travelers: Citi lists a fee for foreign purchases of 3% of the U.S. dollar amount on the Strata. Leave it at home on international trips and carry a card with no foreign transaction fee instead; the Strata Premier and Strata Elite both list none.

The Strata does come with an intro APR offer: 0% for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers from account opening, then a variable 18.74% to 28.74%. The intro balance transfer fee is 3% ($5 minimum) on transfers completed in the first 4 months, then 5% ($5 minimum).

Transfer Partner Access

The reason this card exists in conversations beyond cash-back territory. Citi's transfer partner roster, particularly Virgin Atlantic and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, has well-known sweet spots for travelers willing to search for award space.

The catch: transferring to those partners is only as valuable as your ability to actually find award space. That's a learning curve, and a beginner won't extract maximum value from these partners on day one. Worth knowing as you grow into the card. The deeper dive on these partners lives in our Citi to American Airlines transfer partner explainer.

Earning Structure in Practice

Here's how the categories play out. Say a household spends $700 a month at supermarkets, $300 at restaurants, $400 on gas and $1,000 on everything else.

  • Supermarkets at 3x: 2,100 points a month
  • Restaurants at 2x: 600 points a month
  • Gas at 3x: 1,200 points a month
  • Everything else at 1x: 1,000 points a month

That's before the self-select category, the welcome bonus or any Citi Travel bookings, and with no annual fee there's nothing to earn back.

Now compare that to the Chase Sapphire Preferred. It earns 3x on dining, gas stations, EV charging, top streaming services and online grocery, 2x on other travel and 1x elsewhere, plus up to $100 a year in Chase Travel hotel credits, for a $95 annual fee. For a household like this one, the Preferred's 3x at restaurants helps, but its grocery category covers online grocery only.

The Strata wins when your biggest categories are groceries, gas and commuting, and when you don't want to pay an annual fee.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • $0 annual fee with access to airline and hotel transfer partners, which is a rare combination.
  • 3x at supermarkets, on gas and EV charging, on select transit and on one self-select category.
  • 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers.
  • 20,000 bonus points after $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months.

Cons

  • Restaurants earn only 2x, below the Sapphire Preferred's 3x on dining and the Amex Gold's 4x at restaurants.
  • A 3% foreign purchase fee makes it the wrong card to use abroad.
  • Citi's transfer terms say redemption rates may vary by card, so check the Strata's rate before you count on a partner.

How the Strata Compares

Citi Strata vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred

The CSP is the natural step-up. For $95/year, you get 3x on dining, gas stations, EV charging, top streaming services and online grocery, 2x on other travel, 5x on Chase Travel purchases, up to $100 a year in Chase Travel hotel credits, and trip cancellation and trip delay coverage. Ultimate Rewards transfers 1:1 to a stronger partner roster including United and Southwest, with World of Hyatt at 4:3 for Sapphire Preferred points as of October 1, 2026. If dining and travel are your biggest categories, the CSP's higher earn and richer benefits typically justify the fee. Compare the Chase Sapphire Preferred for the head-to-head if you're between the two.

Citi Strata vs. Capital One Venture

The Venture earns 2x on everything for $95/year. No category math, no quarterly choices. If your spending is spread evenly across categories (no concentrated dining or supermarket spend), the Venture often beats the Strata on raw earning. Capital One miles also transfer to travel loyalty programs, so compare its partner list with Citi's. The Capital One Venture is the better pick for simple, flat-rate earners; the Strata is the better pick for category-aware spenders who don't want an annual fee.

Citi Strata vs. Citi Double Cash

This is the in-house comparison. The Double Cash earns 2% on purchases (1% when you buy, 1% as you pay), paid as ThankYou Points, plus an extra 3% on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi Travel, with no annual fee. The Strata earns 3x at supermarkets, on gas, on select transit and on your self-select category, and 2x at restaurants, but only 1x on everything else. For most households, holding both cards is the right answer: Strata for bonus categories, Double Cash for everything else. That's the no-annual-fee Citi pair.

Who Should Get the Citi Strata

Great Fit For:

  • Newer points collectors who want transfer-partner access without paying an annual fee.
  • Experienced cardholders building a no-fee foundation around a higher-tier card (the Strata pairs well with the Strata Premier or Strata Elite).
  • Households whose biggest spending lines are groceries, gas and commuting.
  • Anyone who'd use 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers.

Not Ideal For:

  • Heavy dining spenders, since the Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold earns more.
  • Anyone who spends abroad, because of the 3% foreign purchase fee.
  • Anyone whose spending is evenly distributed; the Venture's flat 2x is simpler and may earn more.
  • Chase-focused applicants who'd rather get the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve first.

Final Verdict

The Citi Strata earns its slot in a points wallet for one specific reason: it's the cheapest way to access airline and hotel transfer partners. At $0 annually, with 3x on groceries, gas and a category you pick, it's the kind of card you keep forever once you have it, as long as you leave it home on trips abroad. Pair it with a 2% catch-all and you have a complete no-fee setup that earns transferable points on every dollar.

That said, it's outclassed by the Chase Sapphire Preferred for households with concentrated dining spend, and outclassed by the Capital One Venture for those who want a flat-rate earner. Approach the Strata as a foundation card or as a long-term keeper paired with a premium Citi product, not as your single travel card. Updated 2026-09-28: Chase says Sapphire Preferred, Ink Business Preferred, Ink Plus and Corporate Flex points transfer to World of Hyatt at 4:3, not 1:1, as of October 1, 2026. We noted the change where this article describes Chase transfers to Hyatt.

Updated October 1, 2026: Chase now transfers Ultimate Rewards points to World of Hyatt at 4:3 rather than 1:1 for Sapphire Preferred, Ink Business Preferred, Ink Plus and Corporate Flex cardmembers, so we corrected the transfer ratio. We also corrected the Strata's earning rates, self-select categories, foreign purchase fee and welcome offer from Citi's Strata page, and the Sapphire Preferred's hotel credit and categories from Chase's page, and removed earning math built on the old rates.
