Citi Travel redeems ThankYou points at a flat 1 cent each, so it only beats a transfer partner when you can't find an award that costs less. The better reason to use it is earning: 12X on hotels, car rentals and attractions with the Citi Strata Elite, 10X with the Citi Strata Premier, and 5X with the Citi Strata and the Citi Double Cash.
That one number, 1 cent, settles most bookings. Below is when the portal wins, when it loses, and what each Citi card earns there.
What Citi Travel Is and How to Get In
Citi Travel is Citi's booking site for flights, hotels, car rentals and attractions, and you can pay with ThankYou points, cash or a mix. Log in with your Citi account at cititravel.com or through the Citi Mobile App.
The platform matters less than the card you book with. Your card sets the earning rate, and that's where the portal gets interesting.
Flights: Check Transfer Partners First
Flights look easy to book here because the math is clean. Say a $400 round trip prices at 40,000 points. If you can find the same trip for 25,000 miles through a transfer partner, you've spent 15,000 more points than you needed to.
ThankYou points transfer to 20 programs, 15 of them airlines, including American AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles, Turkish Miles&Smiles, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and Air France-KLM Flying Blue. Ratios can differ by program and by card, and Citi lists promotional rates for some partners that run for limited windows, so check the transfer page for your card before you move anything. Transfers are one way. Premium-cabin international seats are where transfers most often beat 1 cent, so search award space before you price the same seat in the portal.
The portal does make sense for flights in a few cases:
- Award space is gone but cash fares are still open on short notice.
- You're flying a budget carrier such as Frontier or Allegiant that isn't a Citi transfer partner.
- Several travelers need seats on the same flight and partners show only one or two award seats.

Hotels: Where the Portal Earns Its Keep
Hotels are the portal's strongest category, for two reasons. The first is earning. Say you book a $500 hotel stay with the Strata Elite: at 12X, that's 6,000 ThankYou points. On the Strata Premier at 10X, it's 5,000.
The second is the hotel credit built into each card. Once per calendar year, the Strata Elite takes $300 off a single hotel stay of two or more nights, and the Strata Premier takes $100 off a single stay of $500 or more. Both amounts exclude taxes and fees, both apply when you book through Citi Travel, and both are applied at the time of booking.
The portal also lists independent hotels with no loyalty program. You were never going to earn Marriott or Hyatt points there anyway, so portal earning is pure upside.
Where the portal can lose on hotels is at chains. Before you book a Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG or Choice property through any third-party site, check whether member rates, points and elite night credits apply to that booking. If they don't, book direct and use a card that earns well on hotels. Also compare the cost with a points redemption at the chain itself, because a cheap award night can beat 1 cent per point.
Rental Cars and Attractions
Rental cars and attractions earn at the same rates as hotels: 12X on the Strata Elite, 10X on the Strata Premier and 5X on the Strata and Double Cash. Check the rental company's own site before you book. If you hold Hertz status and use it, book direct through Hertz instead. If you don't, compare the two prices and take the lower one.
Attractions are the cleanest win. Museum tickets, food tours, day trips and theme park entries earn the same bonus rate, and you were never going to earn loyalty points on a cooking class in Rome anyway.
The 1 Cent Floor
Every portal redemption is worth 1 cent per point. Whatever the cash price is, divide by 0.01 to get the point cost. The flat rate is both the portal's strength and its weakness. You always know what you're getting, but transfer partners can deliver more than 1 cent on the same flight, so the portal is your fallback redemption, not your best one. What Each Card Earns on Citi Travel
The card in your wallet decides whether the portal is a strong play or a mediocre one.
Citi Strata Elite: 12X on hotels, car rentals and attractions, plus the $300 hotel benefit described above. Citi Strata Premier: 10X on the same bookings, plus the $100 hotel benefit. Citi Strata and Citi Double Cash: 5X, with no card-specific hotel credit.
Citi stopped accepting Custom Cash applications on May 28, 2026, and existing cardmembers aren't affected. If you hold both a Strata Premier and a Custom Cash, check the portal rate on each card before you choose which one to pay with.
The Price Comparison Workflow
Before any portal booking over $200, run this five-step check:
- Search the portal for the cash price and total point cost.
- Search the hotel or airline's direct site for the same dates.
- Search award availability through transfer partners, such as Virgin Atlantic for flights, or the chain itself for hotels.
- Calculate the cents per point you would get from each option.
- Subtract any elite benefits or earning you would lose by booking through the portal.
If the portal is within a few percent of booking direct and you wouldn't earn loyalty points anyway, book the portal. If a transfer partner clears 2 cents per point, transfer and book direct. If direct is clearly cheaper, pay cash on a card that earns well. Hotels.com, Booking.com and Expedia are reliable cash-price benchmarks. If the portal price is well above those, look for a resort fee shown as a separate line.
When to Skip the Portal
Skip the portal when you're booking a premium-cabin international flight, when you care about elite recognition, points or night credits at a chain hotel, when a low-category award night at the chain would cover the same stay, or when you're pursuing airline status that third-party bookings may not count toward.
Bottom Line
The Citi Travel Portal is a tool, not a strategy. Used for hotels, rental cars and attractions on a Strata Elite or Strata Premier, it pays a strong earning rate and unlocks a yearly hotel credit. Used for premium-cabin flights, it quietly costs you value that a transfer partner would have kept.
The portal floor is 1 cent per point. If a transfer partner prices the trip for less, transfer. If not, book Citi Travel with your highest-earning Citi card.
