Emirates is the rare airline where an upgrade with miles can beat the direct award. Last-seat availability at the airport, upgradable award tickets, and routes where upgrading costs fewer miles than booking the cabin outright all reward the people who read the fine print.
Getting miles into Skywards is the other half of the plan. Bilt is the only 1:1 transfer for U.S. cardholders. American Express Membership Rewards moves at 1:0.8, so 1,000 points become 800 Skywards miles. Capital One and Citi sit close to Amex, and each ratio is spelled out below.
Here's how I'd work an Emirates upgrade in 2026.
Fare Types Decide Everything
Emirates sells every ticket under a fare brand: Special, Saver, Flex, and Flex Plus. Your upgrade options depend on which one you hold.
Special fares can't be upgraded. Saver fares can be upgraded once check-in opens, online until six hours before departure, and then at the airport or on board. Flex and Flex Plus fares can be upgraded any time after booking, subject to availability. If you want to request an upgrade weeks out, book one of those two.
The ticket also has to be an Emirates flight. Tickets booked through a partner, such as a Qantas codeshare, and partner award bookings can't take a Skywards upgrade, even with miles in your account.
You can only step up one cabin. Economy goes to business, and business goes to first. Economy straight to first isn't possible.
First Class Is the Prize
Emirates restricts first class award bookings for members without elite status, so most travelers can't book first with miles directly. The route around that is to book business, either with cash or miles, and upgrade from there. Check the miles calculator for your route, and confirm on emirates.com before you book that your status can use the upgrade into first.
One rule to plan around: passengers aged eight and under can't use miles for first class awards or upgrades. Parents can still buy first class tickets for children with cash or a card.
What an Upgrade Costs
Emirates publishes a miles calculator. Enter your route, cabin, and Skywards status, then open the upgrade tab to see the mileage for each eligible fare brand. The price depends on the fare brand you booked, and Emirates raised some award and upgrade prices in May 2026, so use the number the calculator shows today rather than a chart from an older post.
Additional taxes or fees can apply on top of the miles, so look at the total before you confirm. I'm not quoting route prices here because they differ by fare brand and keep moving.
Where the Miles Come From
You can move points into Skywards from these programs:
- Bilt Rewards, 1:1. The only 1:1 transfer for U.S. cardholders, and the one to use if you fly Emirates often. The Bilt Mastercard is how you earn Bilt points.
- American Express Membership Rewards, 1:0.8. 1,000 points become 800 miles. Cards like The Platinum Card from American Express and the American Express Gold Card earn Membership Rewards.
- Capital One Miles, 2:1.5. 2,000 miles become 1,500 Skywards miles. The Capital One Venture X earns Capital One miles.
- Citi ThankYou Rewards, 1:0.8. 1,000 points become 800 miles on premium cards like the Citi Premier Card.
- Marriott Bonvoy, 3:1. Worth knowing if you have Bonvoy points sitting idle, but not a path I'd pursue.
Transfer only when you have a specific upgrade or award priced and ready to book.
Confirming an Upgrade in Advance
Emirates releases a limited number of seats for awards and advance upgrades. When those are taken, your flight shows as not available for an upgrade. Log in and search your route: the booking flow shows whether an upgrade is available for your flight and what it costs.
If the flight says Eligible instead of available, you can join a waitlist or try again once check-in opens. Auto-upgrade requests process between 60 days and 48 hours before departure, and you need enough Skywards miles in your account when the upgrade is processed. Advance requests have to be made at least six hours before departure.
The Day-of-Departure Play
Emirates calls last-minute upgrades instant upgrades. You can request one at the airport check-in desk or, in some cases, on board. They aren't subject to the capacity controls that limit advance upgrades: if there's a seat open in the higher cabin, you can buy it with miles at the same price as an upgrade before departure.
Ask at the check-in desk rather than on board, so you get the perks of the upgraded cabin for the whole flight. It's a good fallback, but it isn't a guarantee. The higher cabin may already be full when you arrive.
When the Upgrade Beats a Direct Award
Price two things in the miles calculator for the route you want: the direct business award, and a lower cabin award plus the upgrade. On some routes the lower cabin plus the upgrade costs fewer total miles. On others it costs more, particularly when you start from a Saver award. Compare the totals, including taxes and fees, before you book.
The catch is the one-step limit. Once you upgrade from economy to business, you can't upgrade again to first. If first class is the goal, start with a business ticket.
Practical Tactics for Getting Upgrades to Clear
Book Flex or Flex Plus if you want to ask for an upgrade before the airport, since Saver only opens up once check-in begins. If the booking flow tells you there's no upgrade availability, try other dates or flights, because availability can open later. Don't build the trip around a waitlist; the airport is the better bet.
Where I'd Start
- Pick your cabin and route. Price the direct award and the lower cabin plus upgrade in the miles calculator.
- Check upgrade availability while logged in. If you can confirm in advance, do it. If not, decide whether you're willing to play the airport game.
- Transfer miles only after you've confirmed the redemption is bookable. A speculative transfer can strand points in Skywards.
- Use Bilt if you can. 1:1 is the only ratio that doesn't shrink your points on the way in.
Skywards upgrades take planning, but they're one of the few ways to reach Emirates business or first class for a fraction of the cash price. Open the calculator for your route, price both paths, and move points only when the upgrade is there to book.
