A Marriott gift card loads any amount from $25 to $2,000, never expires, and pays for stays, dining, spa and golf at most Marriott hotels. You buy one at gifts.marriott.com or at select hotels, and you can't use it to book or guarantee a room.

Below is where to buy the cards, how to buy a discounted one safely, where they work and what they can't pay for, all from Marriott's own gift card pages and terms.

Where to Buy Marriott Gift Cards

Online at gifts.marriott.com. Marriott sells a mailed Marriott GiftCard and an emailed eGiftCard, both in U.S. or Canadian dollars. Each card can hold any amount from $25 to $2,000, and you can buy up to $10,000 per person, per credit card, per day.

Marriott says eGiftCards arrive within 1 to 3 business days. Mailed cards go by USPS in 5 to 7 business days (not for cards over $1,000) or by FedEx in 3 to 5 business days for domestic shipments. Online orders can be refunded within 60 days if the card still has its full value, though shipping isn't refunded.

At a hotel. Select participating hotels sell Marriott GiftCards. Marriott's terms say cards bought at a hotel or on gifts.marriott.com can be reloaded through hotels.

With points. Marriott Bonvoy members can redeem points for Marriott gift cards through the Marriott Bonvoy Boutiques site. Marriott says the points needed depend on the card's value, and the option is open to U.S. members only.

For a business. Marriott takes bulk orders by email at BulkBusinessOrders@marriott.com.

How to Buy a Discounted Marriott Gift Card Safely

Marriott's terms say cards must come from Marriott's gift card company or an authorized third party, and its gift card FAQ warns that buying from an internet reseller is at your own risk. A previous owner may already have spent the balance, or, in rare cases, the card was bought fraudulently and its funds are removed before you can use it.

If a retailer lists Marriott gift cards below face value, check that it's selling new cards as an authorized seller, not hosting a marketplace where people resell cards they already own. Then register the card in your Marriott Bonvoy account as soon as it arrives, because Marriott only replaces a lost or stolen card's remaining balance if it was registered.

Two more purchase rules from Marriott: you can't pay for a Marriott gift card with another Marriott gift card, and gift card purchases don't count toward the annual qualifying spend for Ambassador Elite status.

Paying with a Marriott card. Marriott's gift card site tells members to use a Marriott Bonvoy credit card for gift card purchases and earn points. Chase's Marriott Bonvoy Boundless page and Amex's Bevy and Brilliant pages list 6X points at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy, so check your statement to see which rate a gift card order earns before you count on the hotel rate.

Where Marriott Gift Cards Work

Marriott's list of brands that accept the cards includes JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, W, Westin, Sheraton, Courtyard, Residence Inn, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Moxy and Marriott Vacation Club. All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy properties that run under an eligible brand accept them too.

These brands don't accept Marriott gift cards:

  • Bvlgari Hotels and Resorts
  • Design Hotels
  • Four Points Flex by Sheraton
  • Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy
  • MGM Collection
  • Postcard Cabins
  • The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club
  • The Ritz-Carlton Residences
  • The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

You don't need to be a hotel guest to use one. Marriott says the cards work at participating hotels' restaurants, spas, golf and meetings, though a shop or restaurant run by a third party inside the hotel may not take them. You can split a bill across several gift cards and use one card over many visits until the balance is gone.

What a Marriott Gift Card Can't Pay For

You can't use a gift card to book or guarantee a reservation online or by phone, to prepay an Advance Purchase rate, to pay a deposit, or to cover charges on a canceled reservation. Marriott says you present the card at the front desk when you arrive or check out, and you still need a credit card at check-in for incidentals.

Marriott's help page also suggests contacting the hotel before arrival to confirm how it accepts gift cards. If the bill is larger than the card, you pay the rest another way.

Gift cards aren't redeemable for cash except where the law requires it. Where it does, Marriott will cash out a card with less than $15 left by check, after an email request to GCsupport@marriott.com with proof of purchase.

Expiration, Balance Checks and Lost Cards

Standard Marriott gift cards never expire. Promotional eGift Cards are different: they expire on the date shown on the card, the date can't be extended, and only the person named on the card can use it. An older 15-digit Legacy Card with a renewal date on the back is still valid, and Marriott says that date isn't an expiration date.

To check a balance, add the card in the Marriott Bonvoy app (Account, then Gift Cards) or in your account on marriott.com. You'll need the card number and PIN from the back of a physical card or from the eGift email. You can also check it at gifts.marriott.com or by calling 1-800-442-6132, and the app or your account shows up to 20 transactions on each card.

If a registered card is lost or stolen, report it in the app or to customer service right away. Marriott moves whatever balance was left at the time you reported it onto a new card, but it doesn't refund anything spent before you reported it.

Gift Cards, Paid Stays and Points

Marriott's gift card pages treat the card as a way to pay your final bill. Marriott Bonvoy's terms award 10 base points per dollar on qualifying charges a member incurs and pays for, or 5 base points per dollar at brands including Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, Element and Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, with elite bonus points on top. Give your member number when you book or check in so the stay lands in your account.

That makes gift cards a fit for stays you'd pay cash for anyway. When you'd rather book a free night with points, the gift card stays in your account for the next paid trip, since it doesn't expire.
