Key Points

  • Agoda's main advantage is Asia-Pacific hotel inventory, particularly independent boutique and mid-tier properties.
  • Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors don't award points or elite benefits on Agoda bookings, so chain stays are better booked direct.
  • The Sapphire Preferred and Venture X earn 2x on Agoda, while the Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum earn 1x because their hotel bonus rates need direct or in-house bookings.

To book a hotel on Agoda, sign in, search your city and dates, filter to "Exceptional 9+" reviews, pick a room and read its cancellation terms, then pay now or later. One catch: Marriott and Hilton stays booked there earn no hotel points.

That catch is why Agoda gets used heavily in some traveler circles and almost never in others. If you book a lot of hotels in Asia, you probably already have an account. If your trips are mostly in the US or Western Europe, you may never have opened the app. This guide walks through the booking itself, then covers when Agoda is the right tool, which card to pay with and what you give up in hotel loyalty.

How to Book a Hotel on Agoda, Step by Step

  1. Create an account and sign in. AgodaVIP status, and the VIP deals that come with it, build from bookings you make while signed in.
  2. Search your destination and dates. Enter a city, neighborhood or hotel name, then set guests and rooms. Agoda's rates are per room, not per person, and its help page asks you to book the full length of your stay up front, since extending at the desk can mean paying the hotel's full rate.
  3. Filter by review score. The review score filter on Agoda's city pages starts at "Exceptional 9+", then "Very good 8+", "Good 7+" and "Pleasant 6+". That filter is the quickest way to a short list of the best-reviewed properties. Sort by price or location from there.
  4. Pick the room and rate. The same room often comes in several rates. Check whether each one is refundable, whether you pay now or at the property, whether breakfast is included, whether AgodaCash can be used on it and whether it's a PointsMAX rate.
  5. Enter guest details and pay. The lead guest's name should match the ID you'll show at check-in. Pay by card for the earning and protections covered below.
  6. Save the confirmation. Keep the booking ID and voucher on your phone and offline. Smaller hotels sometimes don't see an OTA booking right away, and the booking ID settles that at the desk in minutes.

What Agoda Actually Is

Agoda is an online travel agency (OTA) founded in 2005 and headquartered in Singapore. It has been part of Booking Holdings since 2007. Agoda says its site runs in 39 languages and that customer support is available 24/7.

Booking.com is the global generalist. Agoda's strength is the Asia-Pacific region: Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. A property might be on one site and not the other, or priced differently on each, so it pays to check both.

Functionally, Agoda is a cash booking channel. You search, book, pay at booking or at the hotel, and stay. Marriott and Hilton stays booked there earn no points or elite credit, and AgodaCash can only be spent on Agoda. PointsMAX, covered below, is how you earn partner miles instead.

Where Agoda Wins

The clearest win is Asia-Pacific inventory. If you're booking a mid-tier or boutique hotel in Bangkok, Hanoi, Bali, Manila or a smaller city in the region, search Agoda first. Independent boutique hotels, family-run ryokans in Japan and serviced apartments across Southeast Asia are its strong suit.

Agoda also runs plenty of deals: promo codes that are often region-specific or app-only, AgodaVIP rates for signed-in members and opaque rates where the hotel name stays hidden until you book. Those can be good value, with one cost: you don't know the property until you've paid.

The app is where many of these deals live: some promo codes are app-only, and Agoda's homepage offers 10% off a first app booking. Installing it and signing in once is a small effort. The trade-off is that it pushes notifications hard unless you mute them in settings.

Where Agoda Loses

The Asia-Pacific edge doesn't carry over to the US, UK, Western Europe and Australia. For a hotel in New York, London or Los Angeles, compare a couple of sites and the hotel's own rate before booking.

Problems are the other weak spot. With any OTA booking, changes, refunds and disputes go through the OTA, not the hotel. If your booking goes sideways, you'll be working through Agoda's support rather than the front desk, so allow time.

The biggest loss is loyalty. An Agoda booking is a third-party booking from the hotel's point of view, which has real consequences if you collect hotel points or hold elite status.

Do Agoda Bookings Earn Hotel Points?

For chain hotels, generally no. Marriott Bonvoy's program rules list a room "booked through a tour operator, online travel channel or other third-party channel" as a Non-Qualifying Rate, which earns no points or miles and no membership tier benefits. Hilton Honors excludes "third party websites bookings (irrespective of rate paid)" from the stays that earn, and says on-property elite benefits aren't given on reservations booked through a third-party website.

So a Marriott or Hilton elite who books through Agoda gives up the points, the elite night credit and the on-property recognition (upgrades, late checkout, lounge access) in exchange for whatever price edge Agoda offers. For chain hotels, that edge is often small. Other chains set their own rules, so check your program's terms before booking a chain hotel anywhere but direct. Our guide to the best hotel loyalty programs compares what each one gives back on direct stays.

The math flips for independent and boutique hotels. If you're booking a 12-room boutique in Hoi An, there's no chain program to opt into and no elite credit to lose. Agoda's inventory and pricing are pure upside there.

Which Credit Card to Use on Agoda

What you earn depends on how your card treats a travel agency purchase:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: 2x points on "all other travel" (5x is for Chase Travel bookings only).
  • Capital One Venture X: 2X miles on all other purchases, which covers Agoda (the 10X hotel rate needs Capital One Travel).
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: 4x on hotels is for hotels booked direct and 8x is for Chase Travel, so an Agoda booking falls under 1x on all other purchases.
  • Bilt cards: the Bilt Obsidian Card earns 2X on other travel and the Bilt Palladium Card 2X on everyday purchases; the no-fee Bilt Blue Card earns 1X outside its bonus categories.
  • American Express Platinum: 5X on hotels applies only to prepaid hotels booked on American Express Travel, so Agoda earns the card's 1X on other purchases.

On earning alone, the Sapphire Preferred and the Venture X are the better fits here. Protection is worth weighing too. The Sapphire Reserve's trip cancellation and interruption insurance reimburses pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses, hotels included, up to $10,000 per covered traveler and $20,000 per trip for covered reasons. If you're booking a pricey non-refundable Agoda stay, check your card's guide to benefits for what it covers.

AgodaVIP, AgodaCash and PointsMAX

AgodaVIP is Agoda's loyalty program, and you join automatically once you qualify. It has five tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. VIP deals carry a "VIP" badge, with maximum discounts of up to 12%, 18% or 25% depending on tier, and Agoda says the higher tiers add free breakfast and other perks at selected properties plus priority customer support.

Status lasts six months and renews if you make the required bookings in that window. Agoda notes the listed discounts are maximums that aren't always offered.

AgodaCash is Agoda's in-house credit. Agoda's terms say it's given at Agoda's discretion, for loyalty or goodwill, not on every booking. It can only be used on Agoda bookings, can't be transferred or cashed out, and is valid until used or until the expiry date it was issued with, never more than five years. Treat it as a partial rebate on your next Agoda booking, not a points currency.

PointsMAX lets you earn miles or points in one of 46 partner programs instead. Agoda's page says it applies at more than 500,000 hotels and earns up to 6,000 points per stay.

The rules matter: the points go to the guest staying at the hotel, rates can differ from regular bookings, you earn award miles only (no status credits), cancelled bookings and no-shows earn nothing, and changes mean cancelling and rebooking. Agoda's price guarantee doesn't apply to PointsMAX bookings. Compare the PointsMAX rate with the regular rate before you pick it.

Agoda's Best Price Guarantee

Agoda offers a Best Price Guarantee on hotel bookings. If you've booked through Agoda and find the same property, dates and conditions at a lower rate on one of the sites it lists (including Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Trip.com, Priceline and Airbnb), Agoda will either match the rate or credit the difference in AgodaCash, at its discretion. You need a confirmed booking ID and must file the claim form by 11:59 PM, property local time, on the day before check-in. Flights, activities and hotel-plus-flight bundles aren't covered.

Hotel chains run their own versions. Hilton, for one, matches a lower qualifying rate on another site after you book direct and takes an additional 25% off the room rate, if you claim within 24 hours. Its rules exclude member-only prices, prices that need a login or code to see and app-only prices, so an Agoda VIP or app-only rate won't qualify.

Practical Tips for Booking on Agoda

Read the cancellation policy on the exact rate you're choosing. Non-refundable rates are cheaper, but the lock-in is real. If you're booking well ahead for a personal trip, a refundable rate is usually worth the extra for the flexibility.

Check what the rate allows. The booking page shows whether AgodaCash can be used on that rate, and a PointsMAX rate can differ from the regular rate for the same room. If either is part of your math, confirm it before you pay.

Compare against a direct booking before committing. For chain hotels, the direct rate plus the points and elite benefits you'd earn usually beats a slightly lower Agoda price.

Watch the currency display. Agoda can show prices in your home currency, which is convenient, but Agoda does the conversion, not your card network. If your card has no foreign transaction fees, try switching the display to the hotel's local currency and compare the totals. Agoda's terms add up to 5% when the charge currency differs from the display currency, though not when you pay with a US-issued card in US dollars or book from the US, Canada or the UK.

The Verdict

Book through Agoda when you're staying at a mid-tier or boutique hotel in Asia-Pacific where chain loyalty isn't part of the equation, and sort by the Exceptional 9+ filter to find the best-reviewed options fast.

Book direct for chain hotels where you'd otherwise earn points, elite night credit and on-property benefits. Marriott's and Hilton's rules both cut those off for OTA bookings, and that usually outweighs a modest price edge.

Pay with a card that earns 2x on the charge, such as the Sapphire Preferred or the Venture X. If you'd normally reach for the Sapphire Reserve or the Amex Platinum, remember both earn their hotel bonus rates only through direct or in-house bookings.
