Delta Airlines Expands Austin Flight Offerings

Delta Air Lines recently announced plans to add 11 new flights from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas. This expansion comes just weeks after American Airlines reduced its schedule in the area. The airline is increasing its capacity by 20% and creating its largest-ever schedule in the Texas capital.

The new routes will include service to McAllen and Midland-Odessa, operated by Delta Connection affiliates Endeavor and SkyWest. Three daily flights on these routes will be operated using dual-class regional jets, starting on April 22, 2024. Additionally, Delta will introduce three daily flights to Nashville on the same date, operated by regional carriers.

Delta's expansion in Austin is a strategic move to fill the void left by American Airlines' downsizing. American had previously positioned Austin as a focus city and aimed to be the preferred carrier for both business and leisure travelers in the area. Delta's new flights will provide competition on some routes, including the Austin-Cincinnati route, where Delta will have a monopoly since Allegiant Air only operates twice-weekly flights.

These new routes within Texas will be Delta's first intra-Texas flights in 19 years. The expansion is part of the airline's efforts to position Austin as a gateway to its global network. Delta currently covers seven of the top 10 markets from Austin, with connections to global partners like KLM and AeroMexico.

Before the pandemic, Delta had focus cities in Austin, Cincinnati, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham, and San Jose. During the pandemic, Delta downgraded Cincinnati, Nashville, and San Jose to "regular" outstations, while Austin and Raleigh-Durham remained as focus cities. Adding these new flights in Austin showcases Delta's commitment to the region's growth.

In addition to the expanded flight offerings, Delta also operates a Sky Club at the airport in Austin, providing premium amenities for travelers.
